Defiance viii

Hello all, hope and pray everyone is staying safe and well.

Thanks to my wonderful mum I have ordered this beast.

Silly question and it is only because I am curious. Why do some laptops available on this site use the processor 10870H like mine and others use 10875H. There seems to be minimal difference. Is it to do with the generation of graphics cards?

What's the laptop for out of interest?

Any reason for such high RAM?

I'm guessing video production or something based on the windows pro license?

I just really like to play the inbuilt solitaire on max settings and this is the only one that I could find ...

I mainly play games (well as much as my bad back will let me) like Lord of the Rings Online, Red Dead Redemption 2 and just got Cyberpunk 2077.

I guess I got it it with 64gb of ram to make it as forwards compatible as possible but when things get back to normal I am on the sound team at church and as I don’t work with my bad back I was also going to be doing commercial bookings there as we have a nice new hall with a modern stage and the local theatre is closing for two years for a refit so we were getting a few bookings so in case I got needed to do anything with video or lighting I thought it would help :)

I would reduce it to 32Gb, you really don't need 64Gb, won't add any benefit, even 32Gb is overdoing it for your needs.

Similarly, Windows Pro is not going to provide any benefits, it's not like on previous versions where it added loads of cool features, all it does is enable domain usage.

The rest looks good though.

Won’t hurt having more ram though will it? Especially if I get into the video side of things at church, we do a lot of live streaming at the moment especially at the moment obviously :)

Like I said, none of those uses will get even close to needing 32Gb, that will be more than enough.

It's up to you, but it's like buying a second drive train for a 2 wheel drive car..... just will never be used. Waste of money.

Talking here as someone that got 64gb RAM because I thought I needed it as I do panoramic photos stitching several together in Lightroom / Photoshop etc

SWITCH TO 32GB (2 x 16Gb). I haven’t used more than 45% yet according to HWMonitor.

And normal Windows not Pro.

Save the money and stick a second drive in there so you cannot keep operating system / application files separate to save games and documents etc.

Personally I would recommend waiting a bit longer and asking PCS when they might get AMD Ryzen processors in with 3000series GPUs. You might also then see 1440p screens in a decent chassis.

Thanks. I have had two drives in my previous one and I didn’t like the day to day management of having it separated but that’s just a personal opinion.

Thanks to both of you for your advice about Windows version and ram, I had given it a lot of thought and think I will stick to it but I appreciate your advice. My last gaming laptop lasted 8 years and was still going ok, just had the opportunity to upgrade thanks to mum getting money in a will, but towards the later years of the older laptop some of the games needed more ram to get max settings.

I will never get the opportunity to get a laptop this expensive again so don’t mind the bit extra :)

Ok I know you’re set on it but games won’t utilise the RAM. what they will utilise is the storage with some games now using in excess of 100gig even having the extra storage will be more beneficial than the RAM.

even Cyberpunk recommends only 16GB RAM on its highest settings.

So do you know why laptops with RTX 2 series have the slightly more powerful processor? Not that it makes any difference. Just curious

To be honest if going for something this expensive I would be considering a desktop and then if it had to be a laptop:

Priority 1: AMD Ryzen

then:

- 1440p screen
- GPU
- 32 RAM
- as much storage as can afford.

Good warranty
Pixel gtee.

Supply availability is poor on all tech items at moment and as the RTX3000 series laptops were only new this week (available during February) I expect they are still testing compatibilities before putting spec higher.

For a more precise answer you would need to ask PCS directly.

In all honesty the supply issues are also what is causing some higher than usual prices at moment.

I wouldnt have jumped on the new laptops until I’d seen what range is coming as it’s all in the process of updating at moment. New Intel chips on the way, new Ryzen, etc.

This time of year I would have waited until Feb / March to see what’s offered.

I now realise this was put in sales advice section and I don’t really need it. I just put it in the part PC Specialist link suggested, sorry if people thought I was after advice and then flatly ignoring it. I just should have looked where it was getting posted haha

It is your laptop after all but even with a windfall to spend, I think it’s wasted money. Especially when 1440p laptop gaming isn’t far away on 17” (already here but wouldn’t recommend the TF chassis at moment. )
