Elite Dangerous - Odyssey on the Horizon

Engineering, although tedious is the best thing on Elite. Although I still havent mastered getting Thargoid Tech without getting blown up!!
Yeah agreed.

it’s a bit of a slog getting high upgrades via Engineers and be a balancing act.

for general forum info.

Also getting Guardian upgrades like frame shift drive make a big difference.

although, with weapons upgrades it can make things easier, I can handle 2 anacondas in solo and have managed some pretty big grouping of bad ships in compromised beacon areas, I tend to loiter around those with valuable cargo.

This looks like an interesting change.

I like the idea of ground pounding settlements in my Corvette.

Swap missile pack from ship killers to settlement killers.

Settlements are going to need Very strong shields, I can shield strip Anaconda level in seconds (and not fully engineered load out yet).

I guess nukes will be banned, shame I could nuke a few Empire cities that issued bounties on me.

This game is the reason is I have not long spent almost £1,300 on a new pc, due to arrive in a couple of weeks. I remember playing the game on a Beeb model 2.

£1300 will play elite quire nicely i should expect. A great game for soaking up some time... very chill doing trade or mining.

Odyssey alpha started - you need to go onto Steam and purchase the Alpha Deluxe package.

I started with Frontier Elite on the Amiga back in the 90's and was completely addicted. After another eternity reading rumours the new version I grabbed Elite:Dangerous as soon as it was out.

I have fallen out of it though over the past few years - I'll blame the kids again - but I am hoping to get back to it properly with my new system now at hand. This latest release might get help me get back to it! But that article was my worry - I really hope it won't be half-cooked.....

Remember, this is the 4th stage of the ALPHA, so it's not even in Beta yet, it's still got a long way to go.

It's a great game, and for me, one of the real triumphs when you enter VR. There's a lot of VR content that's really lazily written and takes 5 minutes to complete, it's really just showcase stuff that's not had any hard work put into it. But Elite Dangerous is very very good in VR.

Yes good point Spyder, thanks.

I’ve been pondering VR for down the road - for racing games mostly but also have Elite in my sights. Whenever I get to the GPU upgrade point then it’ll be a primary consideration.

Whenever the world gets back to normal then a stateside layover will be converted to shopping trip I think!

I’ll look forward to the advice here when that time comes....

Head tracking also works well in Elite and many other titles, I’ve been using this system for Euro Truck and Assetto Corsa for a couple of years and it’s great.

It’s not quite as immersive as VR but still very good with an ultrawide monitor and a bit easier to live with on the vision side of things if you’re dealing with a title that has lots of keyboard commands.

I love Assetto Corsa I must say. I'll have a look into that. Thanks @AgentCooper !

I'm a huge fan of VR, for the few titles that do it well and have actually taken the time to do something "proper" like Half Life: Alyx and Elite, to me it's an essential medium.

But even aside from gaming, just for media watching it's quite immersive and makes it feel quite a treat.

There are a lot of concerts and live events filmed and uploaded in VR now also.

I'm still on the first gen HTC Vive, and will be looking to upgrade that over the next few years as the resolution is without question not enough for a really immersive experience, especially when text is involved, but it's still great fun.

Very worthwhile investment I'd say and prices are definitely coming down for anything except the Valve Index.
