Extremely slow restart

Hi,

My son's PC says it can't upgrade to W11, which I'm currently thinking is because TPM isn't turned on (based on the absence of the relevant section in Security)

Following the steps outlined by Microsoft it says to click Restart in the Recovery section. It's been over half an hour now and it's still at 'Preparing to configure Windows, don't turn off your computer' - which feels too long?

Can I turn the computer off (despite the message) and go into the BIOS manually at startup, and/or is this signposting something else awry?

If TPM isn't enabled it's because the BIOS is very out of date, on anything past about March 2023, TPM is automatically enabled in the BIOS along with the other required settings for Windows 11.

I wouldn't suggest manually enabling settings, get PCS approval to flash a recent BIOS, there will be a lot of other improvements and security fixes that are important to be included that you're currently missing.

With regards to the update taking ages to apply, you can just press and hold the power button until it fully switches off, and then restart IF it's still at Preparing and not actually applying updates yet.

Thanks, will get in touch with PCS then.

Any theories on why it's taking forever? It's finally finished now but possibly an all in total. (I just chose turn off)

Got a reply from PCS, they just told me to go into the BIOS and turn it on, no mention of updating anything.

'recommendation from the Forums was to contact you for approval to perform a BIOS update to the latest version'

Turn what on, TPM?

Was it visible in the BIOS, or did they direct you to where it is/should be?
Yes; they provided some clear instructions on how to go about it - I've just not yet been able to get back on there to do it.

That's where I started out with today's escapade, it was SpyderTracks' observation about updating the BIOS to the latest which nudged me off track a little :D

I would personally go back to them and push for a BIOS update, you'll be missing out on loads of security updates if your TPM isn't automatically enabled as you're on an old BIOS
