Fans not speeding up when hot

Have you changed which graphics card your system is using? You can do this in the NVIDIA control panel (instructions here). Also are your graphics drivers up to date through Geforce Experience, make sure you get this from the NVIDIA website and nowhere else to make sure its legit. There is no way your gpu should be idling at anywhere above 50c...

Il give it a try, thanks for the tip.

So i have a vortex laptop from pcs. When i first got it it was gaming at mid to high 90's so i canotacted PCS and they told me those temperatures where fine. I applied an undervolt which bought it down to low 90's. 8 months later the motherboard died (my personal opinion it cooked itself but i never got a reason for the fault from PCS). Now i have the laptop back i have repasted it with MX-4 and it sits in the late 70's early 80's. Send that laptop back to PCS and get them to sort it out.

There is no way i would

OK, so after getting no where late last night I shut the laptop down and went to bed.
Then this afternoon I started it up again to to have a go at downloading new Nvidia drivers, the whole thing just worked without doing anything.
The GPU temp varied between 35 deg and 43 deg, and the fans were kicking in automatically as you'd expect.
I kept checking it throughout the day as I installed all my programs etc... and was totally fine.
I also checked the GPU card driver and that was up to date, and the power management setting (in global settings, in NVIDIA Control centre) for the card is 'Optimal Power'

So I have no idea what the issue was, but seems to be OK now.
I'm setting up the GPU now to run some machine learning in anger, so I'll see what happens to the temp in actual use.

Until all windows updates are installed the laptop won’t be configured. My guess is it was still downloading stuff in the background.

Maybe. I'm just really really glad that I never shut the screen when it was in the 90's yesterday, despite reading that was an acceptable temp for the GPU. I reckon I could have easily destroyed the screen with that sort of temp going on.

Despite the GPU issues, the Vyper 17" is a very well built machine, feels really high quality. It's hard to believe it has so much hardware packed into such a thin box. Lets just hope its reliable

Hi, sorry for bringing this thread back to life, however I am looking at purchasing this laptop, have there been any updates at all on the fan situation? And also if possible could I confirm two things if anyone has the answers?

1. When using turbo fan are the temparatures good? And are the fans unbareabley loud? (As I don't think for me personally this would be an issue)
2. Has anyone had success with custom fan curves using either Speedfan or MSI Afterburner?

I only ask because this laptop with my chosen config (rtx 2060, 1tb nvme ssd, 16gb ram) seems to be the best price/performance at £1224 (with the better thermal paste and some extra warranty)

However if the issues haven't been solved, whilst we're at it does anyone have any other recomendations? I was leaning towards the Asus A15 TUF with Ryzen 7 4000H and RTX 2060, however the bad screen reviews have really put me off

Thanks in advance!

1. The temps were great using fan boost, cpu and gpu down to around 50c but it sounded like a jet engine and yes was unbearable loud even with headphones.

2. I could not set custom curves using either afterburner or speed fan or the control centre provided with the laptop, the bios prohibited custom curves.

I've just received my full refund and im just building an sffpc instead, my new pc is smaller than my toaster so its great.

You wont get any help on other laptop brands here I'm afraid. The mods are just volunteers and great guys but this is just for PCS hardware. Other members will however chip in and help out occasionally.

Good luck with your laptop hunting.

Hi guys,

Decided to register as this thread concerns me somewhat. A couple of days ago I ordered a 17.3" Optimus Pro XI. The price was great and I even added a few extra bits such as the thermal cooling paste.

I am new to PC gaming and am concerned that, even if this laptop is designed to run at such a temperature, surely the longevity will be greatly reduced on certain components if the laptop runs at this temp constantly? 90-100 degrees from what I've researched online sounds very high, especially for a constant running temp.

How much of an issue is this? Does running the fan on 100% manually resolve the issue completely? Are there other accessories I can purchase to help manage the temperature? It's a £1300 purchase so I want to get it right!

Hi, so I've been using mine every day for the past 3 weeks training models for machine learning, so quite heavy on the CPU and GPU for hours on end. I just use the 'Game mode' fan setting which means the fans just come on automatically when either the CPU or GPU heat up.
When they do come on for me, they're normally at about 50% speed and loud but not a big problem particularly if you have headphones on. If I turn on 'Turbo boost' manually so persuambly 100% fan speed it does sound like an aircraft taking off. However in 'Game mode' i don't think its ever automatically gone to 100% speed.
I haven't used the custom fan speed graphs, because I find 'game mode' works well enough for me.

As you probably read in this thread, I was having problems initially with GPU seriously heating up, so when you get your laptop make sure you install all the softwares particularly the 'ControlCenter' program (which controls the fans and RGB keyboard), and the update the NVIDEA software and drivers. DO NOT CLOSE THE LID IF THE GPU IS RED HOT. Luckily I didn't do that, even though I'd read somewhere that it was OK for the GPU to get very hot, because the temp mine was at prior to installing ControlCenter would have definitely wrecked the screen when closed.

My Vyper laptop is performing brilliantly for what I need and I'm very impressed so far, after fixing the initial problems.
It's extremely good value for money for the spec and build quality (I still can't believe how thin it is for how powerful it is)

The only minor outstanding gripe is I can't seem to keep the RGB keyboard lit up on power up, I always have to manually turn it on in controlcenter, but like I say it is very minor.

p.s. just seen your spec, go for the 32GB ram if you can stretch, because it will be futureproofed much longer.

Hi, I'm not sure if its the same for gaming, but when I've been using the GPU it only really goes to 70-80 deg, controlcenter game mode setting seems to deal with the temp OK. If your GPU temp does go as high as 90+ the manual turbo fan mode setting will reduce the temp sufficiently, its just a bit noisy at 100% fan speed.

Hey, thanks for your response it's super helpful! Can I ask do you know what temps roughly the CPU and GPU are reaching on "game mode" or the 50% speed? Also I was going to be getting the pc with no OS and installing windows 10 myself as I have a spare key, I assume you just downloaded the control centre off of the pcs website?

Also I realise you have the vyper rather than optimise but from what I've seen they're rather similar so I assume the temp situation should be similar too, would you recommend the machine? Apart from thermal "issues" (although yours seems to be fine now) is everything else good? I'm planning on getting the laptop for running some different virtual machines on there, some coding and some gaming, I already have 2 desktops (one mid size with a 1080ti and one Sff with a 1070) so this is just for my travels but will also become my dedicated projects machine (as I say for coding and other projects)

Do you happen to know which (I assume) Clevo the Optimus pro XI is based off of too?

Thanks again for your help!

I'm really not sure on temps v fan speed at the mo, I'll take note next time I'm heavily using the CPU and GPU, I just know Game mode is dealing with the temp fine on its own now.

Everything is really good on the Vyper (apart from the minor RGB issue I explained earlier). This is the first laptop I've had that's more powerful than my work laptop. I think if you got this spec, it would be the only machine you need (if you get decent ram and big hard drive anyway).

Prior to this laptop I was using a 4GB Dell laptop with 2 different OS's, and I had another laptop if I wanted to train something that I knew was going to take days. But this laptop I've got windows 10 and using the linux ubuntu app, so have best of both worlds in one machine. The combo of ram and CPU is 10x quicker (to train AI stuff) than my previous laptop AND I can do other stuff at the same time (which I couldn't on my old laptop, hence using 2 sometimes). The GPU is mind boggling quick to train stuff, literally minutes on stuff that would have taken hours. It's really enabled me to do so much workload and test new ideas so much quicker.

I don't really know the diff between the Vyper and Optimus, I just know the Vyper is really good for me.
In terms of value for money it can't be beaten. I get 8% discount at Curry's PC World, and even taking that it account I couldn't get the same spec as mine unless you were to spend £2000+, there was always something missing like not quite enough Ram, or tiny Hard drive, or small screen etc....

Thanks for your input, sadly the vyper really is out of my budget, as for my same config it would be £200 more than my Optimus build, so not sure whether to try the Optimus given the fan issues people are having

OK no probs, good luck with whatever you go for! Make sure control centre is installed and the NVIDEA drivers are up to date when you get it and I'm sure you'll be fine.
