also note, if it is the master socket that is the problem, technically youre not allowed to change it yourself, its the property of BT even though its in your house.

i started a download this morning with around 180kbs and when i got home it was on 40 and still going at 40 now :/. I'll have a go with the assault of the master socket tomorrow (this doesnt much intellect apart from unscrewing it and plugging it into something does it?
Yes,just unscrew the two screws pull out & plug in,if there is an improvement it may be worth getting a BT-I plate, have a look at this.

might possibly be the master socket as suggested, but if you phone BT about it & they find nothing wrong on their side, you could be hit with a hefty bill.

so if it is the master socket i have to tell bt to come and change it AND pay for a call out?
If the master socket is faulty it shouldn't cost you anything,
but taking the plate off & plugging straight into the master socket wont prove it's a faulty socket.
What it will do is,if the speed improves,it will point to the house extension wiring causing the problem, in which case you could try new filters & or install a BT I-Plate as I suggested.
If it doesn't improve it still wont prove it's a faulty socket, as you say, the average download speed for your area isn't much better than what your getting. But,no harm in phoning BT to try & get some answers.

okay, I'll try taking off the faceplate and plugging it in. If that doesnt work Ill give BT a call and hopefully they will do something that wont charge and apparently they are putting in bt infinite in my village :O but i dunno if its just for the other half of the village as one of the BT managers or something lives on the other side of the village and boosts his speed :/. Thanks a lot for your help everyone.
