Foray into 4K Gaming

So I have had my current PC for coming up to 7 years now, always stayed at 1080p to date, but looking to make the step up to 4K at long last and trying to get a solid build that will last me for a good number of years without needing much in the way of upgrades. This would be my third PC Specialist build.

Link to current PC build: PCS Forum Link (only modification is doubling up the RAM to 32GB)
Current Monitors: 2x Iiyama ProLite X2483HSU
New Monitor: Open to suggestions on a solid 4K monitor to add to the existing pair; budget for this around £600 give or take. I am limited in terms of physical space to something no more than probably 28"
PC Budget: The below spec sits at ~£3240 (inc VAT), ideally want to trim this down to £3000 if there are reasonable savings to be made; but lets say max budget £3500
Usage: 4K Gaming - not much of an FPS player; generally into my MMOs (with Ashes of Creation on the horizon)/4X/Simulation games but as above would like to step up to 4K with high/ultra settings where feasible, standard office use (MS Suite), trading and coding/database work.

I have gained 3 children since my last PC build, so plan to repurpose the existing PC into something for them to use; as you'd expect I have amassed a large amount of files over the years which are split between multiple older PCs and drives so will look to amalgamate these onto the single 8TB HDD.

The case I picked was mainly down to cosmetics, I'm not tied to it being RGB, but something on the quieter and cooler end of the spectrum would be nice.

I had opted for a 1000W PSU initially, but the config suggested I only needed 850W (including the 20% extra) - thoughts on that appreciated.

A lot of games I play I believe tend to be heavier on the CPU hence why I have gone for the 14700 - I have also previously always been an Intel user to date; not dead set against AMD but may need some convincing!

RAM I appreciate is on the larger end but have felt current PC struggle at times with some of the database work I do even with 32GB, felt given the ever decreasing cost of this would be worth an upgrade.

Any and all advice on tweaks and optimisations to the above build very welcome along with suggestions on a decent 4K monitor that won't totally break the bank!

Hello, as you have limited room, I would not recommend a 4K monitor because the minimum size to keep PPI acceptable (<140) is 32''.

CPU: Intel is currently a no-go due to a dead platform and a number of issue. Avoid it like the plague.

PSU: The automatic configurator is unreliable; it does not take into account transient spikes, efficiency, or future upgrades. Ignore it.

This is what I would recommend, leaving roughly £800 for a decent 27" OLED display. Just my opinion. :)

Thank you very much for your reply and insight, particularly in response to the CPU - that thread is shocking to read! Looks like the AMD fanclub will gain a new member.

I need to do a bit more research into 4K monitors it would seem, hadn't ever come across a minimum size requirement previously. In terms of physical monitor space available, I'm between a rock (well a wooden beam on a sloping roof) and the far edge of the desk. If I am able to reorganise to allow for a 32" monitor (and thus 4K), would the GPU upgrade to the 4080 Super be warranted please? Any further knock on effects?

Well noted on storage - its a shame there is no 4TB SOLIDIGM option, though having a pair of these @ 2TB is cheaper still than the 4TB Samsung 990 so no real downside, thanks!

Per the desktop building guide thread, upgrades to cooling and PSU to keep the expensive new toy running well are a no brainer, so thanks again for the suggestions!

Actually, it's a recommendation rather than a requirement; pixel density is important for a good experience; if it's too low, you'll lose quality and can even see the individual pixels ; if it's too high, the text, app, and everything displayed will be very small, making it difficult to view the items without zooming over 100% scale.

Personally, I believe that 1440p is the best resolution for gaming; if you want to go up to 4K, a 4080 SUPER could be a better GPU.

Yes, 2 x 2TB M.2 P44PRO would cost about £40 less than a single 4TB 990PRO.
