Gaming laptop power supply and storage questions

Just configured this laptop as a mid to high end laptop which I expect to see quite a lot of gaming over the next few years (was currently playing TW:WH2 on low settings on old laptop and borderlands2) fairly happy with the specs in general but had some concerns over power supply as after reading on a few sites there seems to be quite a concern on throttling either due to not enough power or overheating. I believe one of the specific figures for a 2070 under full load was 80W alone hence why I went for the beefier power supply. Low RAM is because I have 2x8gb already and will swap out when it comes. Final note was using the NVME as main drive and whether that would cause any issues hopefully can recover data from old SSD (samsung860) but not looking to clone directly. Any other advice welcome.

Ahhh nice catch RAM wasn't that old so thought would be fine DDR3L on the back so I'm guessing not compatible?

Wouldn't really want to go any higher than £1600 which seems to be enough to get 16gb of the quick RAM so I guess that's sorted heh

Using the NVMe drive as the system drive will be fine (that's what it's for!). You should be able to add your existing Samsung 860 SSD as a SATA drive to the new system and copy anything you need across. Personally I would format that drive once you have your data copied, it's not wise to have a second bootable Windows drive (with the wrong version of Windows on it) active.

Yeah I figure it may require going into bios to make sure it boots from the right drive or possibly finding an external connector need to do a bit of reading up, ofc drive may be fried as the old laptop died a pretty sudden death (pop + burning smell from laptop now no response to power, LEDS or otherwise).

Orders in so looking forward to some pretty games and nice FPS in the near future (and actually installing witcher3 XD )

No need. PCS will install the Windows OS you've bought on that NVMe drive and the BIOS will be configured to boot it. I'm just being over cautions with your existing SSD, I've seen too many system screwed by having two different bootable versions of Windows....

In that case I'd be cautious plugging the old SSD into your brand new rig. I'd be tempted to fit it in a caddy and USB attach it - ideally to an older PC/laptop to be sure it's working. :)

So not sure if this is the right place for a comment but it came up with my old thread when searching for my current issue. I received the rig above and it has been working quite well for the almost year and a half I've had it (barring some dust issues and windows and nvidia in general being a bit naff).

I have now run into what appears to be a power supply issue starting approx 4days ago I had thought it was the extension lead that had become damaged (a fairly common issue). However, on further inspection it appears that the issue is that of the power bank possibly not supplying enough power under load.

How did I get to this conclusion? issue first appeared while gaming would be fine and then all sorts of horrible performance when checking i noticed I had switched to battery power while still plugged in and yes I have thoroughly checked all connections from the wall to the power input on the laptop. For about a day the problem was intermittent while gaming ( once or twice in a couple of hours) but now it has degenerated to the point where the only time the laptop will charge is while off or when it goes into battery saving mode. Oddly it will charge quite quickly to almost full when on but an overnight charge will only take it to >80% or so.

I believe this to be a problem with the power block and have opened a message on the online tech support which i hope will resolve this. Having perused a bit of the customer service forums I gather this may take some time to be dealt with (fair enough). However I was wondering if anyone here has any further ideas on the problem and also whether I'd be better trying to find a power block myself (had a quick search and getting the correct block seemed extremely difficult I think I found one on amazon with 0 feedback that doesn't look particularly trustworthy).

Any help appreciated

TLDR: power block problem advice appreciated, customer service contacted, better to go it alone? ETA's?

I'm not the expert on this, but I do know that some DTR laptops require the power supply to be connected to achieve peak performance and that on battery they are throttled somewhat. The resident laptop expert @barlew may be able to help here.

100% this sounds like your PSU is dead. All you can do is what you have done by requesting PCS support. What i will say is absolutely do not buy a power brick from anywhere but PCS. If you get one from a 3rd party and its a dodgy knock off you could fry your laptop at which point you will be covered for nothing.

Yeah figured this its just odd that it still seems capable of some kind of trickle charge atm

So have gotten a reply after phoning that they do not have in stock, I'm assuming the forum is not allowed to provide 3rd party recommendations?

Did also get tech support reply saying they do but going from the price they did not look at the correct spec of power supply. (11.8A 19.5v 230W )

Did try a clevo site based in Germany but they have to deliver to friends in Europe as no direct delivery and then they will send on.

If it IS allowed I would love a recommendation for sourcing a spare as this has taken a huge amount of time so far and still will have to wait for EU to UK delivery regardless.

Slightly related is it possible to use 2bricks somehow? 180w with correct output seems slightly easier to source.

Thanks for any help.

Third party recommendations are not allowed. They're competitors!

Have you logged into your account on the PCS website and looked under Spare parts for that order. That would list the power charger, if it’s in stock and price if you are unsure about what you were told on the phone. Plus it will be the one for that laptop as well as it brings up the details of your order.

Also check the upgrades section in case they have one listed in that part too.

@andjef796 yup checked both and not available unfortunately. I was hoping for a possible exception as they had advised that they would be unable to supply the guy on the phone suggested sites beginning with A and E respectively (tacit approval?) but from what I can see their as likely to be counterfeit as genuine. Guess I'll be stuck waiting for overseas shipping awhile longer.
