Hi Guys,

I need some techy help with my new PC Build. I want a PC to be able to play some car racing games, mostly Assetto Corsa, iRacing, rFactor 2, Project Cars 2 etc. In very 'laymans' terms, do you guys think this build would be capable/above minimum requirements in order to play with average graphics settings and that it should last for a few years? Thanks!

The below PC comes to €800 ex vat, this is about the max I would like to spend. I may be able to spend a little bit more if it was justifiable.

Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i5 Quad Core Processor i5-7500 (3.4GHz) 6MB Cache
Motherboard ASUS® H110M-R: Micro-ATX, DDR4, LGA1151, USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs
Memory (RAM) 8GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 2133MHz (1 x 8GB)
Graphics Card 6GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1060 - DVI, HDMI, 3 x DP - GeForce GTX VR Ready!
1st Hard Disk 240GB KINGSTON UV400 2.5" SSD, SATA 6 Gb (550MB/R, 490MB/W)
DVD/BLU-RAY Drive NOT REQUIRED
Memory Card Reader USB 3.0 EXTERNAL SD/MICRO SD CARD READER
Power Supply CORSAIR 550W VS SERIES™ VS-550 POWER SUPPLY
Power Cable 1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling INTEL STANDARD CPU COOLER
Thermal Paste STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING
Sound Card ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Wireless/Wired Networking WIRELESS 802.11N 300Mbps/2.4GHz PCI-E CARD

Hi, what's your current budget? And what's your full spec?

7th Generation processors have been made obsolete by the newer 8th generation ones which show a massive increase in performance. See below.

I assume racing games are particular demanding so therefore I would suggest a better CPU cooler rather than the stock one. I suggest the CoolerMaster Hyper 121x, alternatively PCS Frostflow 100 series which is slightly cheaper.

I would also suggest getting 16gb of ram compared to 8gb.

I would say the graphics card is perfect.

Are you planning on fitting another hard disc? 240GB is hardly anything. Project Cars 2 itself takes up 36GB.

Hi, sorry, should have specified that this is €800 ex vat and is about at the higher end of my budget available.

How would I know which "gen" the processors are on this list?

Yes I do understand more ram the better and 8gb would be boarderline but I selected 1 x 8gb as opposed to 2 x 4gb to give me the option of upgrading to 16gb in the near future. I have been told that RAM prices are particularly high at the moment and that they should come back down?

I will be using this PC solely to play some games on occasionaly (it would be rare for me to even use it more than once a week.), so I think 240gb would be fine to start with and if I get close to the limit I can always add more.

Nit-picking: Just to say that those benchmarks for 8th Gen CPUs are actually for the laptop -U series ones, which are very different to the desktop CPUs. The laptop ones saw such a huge performance increase because the number of cores was doubled, whereas desktop i5 and i7 CPUs saw a 50% increase in cores. Also that benchmark shows i5s and i7s scoring almost identically, which is because ULV i5s and i7s both have the same number of cores and both have hyperthreading - the main difference is a slightly different frequency. Whereas a desktop i5 doesn't have hyperthreading, unlike the desktop i7 which does. So the slide isn't really representative of desktop 7th Gen vs Desktop 8th Gen, or Desktop i7 vs Desktop i5.

Sorry for the nit-picking. I totally agree that the 8th Gen desktop CPUs are a much better buy. You can spec them up in this configurator: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers/intel-z370-pc/

If you can stretch your budget, I'd suggest checking this spec out: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/configure-review/237/

It has a fixed spec, but a fixed price as well which has a fairly substantial discount. It offers 8th Gen i5, 16gb RAM, GTX 1060 6gb, 1TB HDD, and a 256gb NVMe SSD.

Oussebon dammit!! :D

Apologies for the delay, the website was stuck on a refresh loop causing me to loose my text progress:(.

I was going to suggest that, and totally agree with the spec. It would be definitely worth it.
