Gaming PC in next few months - budget £2500-£3000

Hi folks,

I love games, but not a hardware guy. I’m looking to change my PC which is creaking a bit on newer games in the next few months. I like GeForce based on good experiences, and tho my current processor is an Intel, I’m not wed to it (looking at the forums here AMD are getting some love at the mo). I’ve seen the fact there are new gen GeForce cards coming soon, so I can wait for those if that’s the wise thing to do.

Games-wise I play a mix from oldies like Rising Storm 2, to Elite Dangerous, AC Odyssey, to Red Dead 2. I’m planning on playing the hell out of CP2077 being an old school TT RPG fan of the setting, so some ray tracing is a must. I’m also interested in The new MS Flight Sim.

My monitor is a AOC AGON AG271QG 27“ that natives at 2560 x 1440. So a fast smooth FPS at 1440 is my target, but if I can hit 4K potential in my budget I can look to change the monitor later on at some point.

I do a bit of image editing on the side, but that’s not a priority. Cool and quiet is more important as fan noise gets on my wife’s nerves. :)

Rather than take a stab at a spec and miss the mark, could I please ask the gurus here for their thoughts on the best spec I can get for 2500 or a little over? I can stretch to £3000 for the right rig if it makes a big enough difference in longevity and performance.

Thanks!

There are a lot of new products coming out next month and prices change almost daily, so it's not really worth speccing a build up so early as it won't be valid in a couple of months.

Fair enough, makes sense. i‘ll put it on hold for a bit and wait for the new products. Thanks!
The new GPUs are set to be announced on September 1st with release date later in the month, so we should know a lot more by then.

You’re definitely buying at the right time though, you’ll get significantly more performance from the same money in 1 month as opposed to now.

Hi folks,

With the new announcement details for the 30x0 series out and my old PC starting have issues, I'm going to pull the trigger on a new build on the 17th for a 3080. Having looked around the boards I have come up with the following and I wonder if the People That Know here can have a look over and let me know if there is anything I could do better, please? I have negotiated with my wife for a 3K budget. I have gone AMD for the first time ever after reading the advice that is is the way to go at the moment, though I am open to Intel if that is the best option for me.

The 2080 Super is there as a placeholder for a 3080 as I have seen people do that. As above, my monitor is a 27" AOC AGON AG271QG that natives at 2560 x 1440. I have a view to getting a 4K monitor next year.

A few specific questions:
- Is the case big enough for a 3080?
- Is the power supply too much / little?

Some of the choices are a bit out there for gaming so I've brought them more in line with what would be recommended with a high end rig.

Note that if your PC is being put out to pasture you can transfer the Windows license to your new PC and save some cash there also.

I think you are over-shooting the GPU as the 3070 is going to be the new 2080Ti which is a 4k gaming card. The 3080 is poised for high end 4k usage which you aren't going to see the benefit of until you upgrade to a serious monitor (£600+). In your shoes I would save the cash and opt for the 3070 then see what next year brings along with a new monitor.
