Looking into a mid range gaming PC for 1080p currently 60hz but plan to upgrade to 144hz. I think the 1660 super graphics card would've been sufficient and £130 cheaper! but thats not in stock, so the 2060 is the next option. Is this a good build for the price?

Changed the RTX 2060 to a GTX 1660 Super and the 1 x 16GB 2400mhz RAM to 2 x 8GB 2666mhz. So an improvement on the RAM, higher speed and dual channel. downgraded to a GTX 1660 super as I think it's plenty capable for my needs for considerably less. This change also makes the price over a £100 lower: £861

Why not to save money on a CPU and get an AMD?

Well this is for a friend who is a bit of a brandist. Any suggestion on an alternative AMD which as good performance at lower cost? Thanks
Brandist, lol must look good looking out of that very deep Intel hole.

is a brandist, not just a fanboy ?

for info there is a 3050 and 3060 (non Ti) due launch early next year.

both would be great for 1080p 144hz at 24”

Is there a reason for micro atx, cooling tends to be an issue with cheaper setups.

if you can wait a few months and save more, then go for slightly better spec, cheap pc’s are really false economy, as invariably you need to replace full pc each time, poor roi.

Both I guess lol. But doesn't explain why, and is too stubborn to change his mind. He wants a PC ASAP so waiting for what may be isn't ideal.

I don't see an issue with micro atx myself. It's for space more than cost, the design of the case can be an issue with air flow. I'm a fan of the more compact systems, upgraded from mini itx to micro atx only due to graphics card size, but with a liquid cooler and 4 case fans it's as cool as a cucumber.

Oh well good luck finding a build for your ‘friend’.

Personally I find these rushed cheap builds a poor return of investment, invariably cost more over a 10 yr period, and like Intel become end of life CPU using old flawed technology.

Now is a bad time to be looking at an Intel system or a 1080 system.

New Intel cpu out in March, PCIe 4.0 capable potentially fixing security issues, Nvidia 3050 / 3060 cards released (likely backend of January post CES).

I agree, if it was for myself I'd probably do hours of research, but it's not for me, the main thing is that it is sufficient for intended use, and the config has no bottlenecks etc. Just something that will be decent enough to play the latest games at mid - high settings on 1080p 144hz for now and at least a couple of years.
