*Please see updated List at the bottom list*

Hi, i'm looking to get my first tower and to upgrade from my MSI GL62 6QD Laptop (950x).

I would like it for gaming mostly on some of the newer titles and hope to use it atleast a year or 2 before upgrading parts. I know i'll need more storage as 1TB will not be enough.

Opinions and suggestions are greatly welcomed and appreciated, I'm hopefully going to try building it by Feb-Apr 2021 (hopefully rtx's will be available by then on PCS) Thank you in advance! :)

So are you looking to send your case to PC Specialist and have them put the build together for you?

They only sell complete systems so you’d still have to buy some RAM and a hard drive as part of the deal.

I'd purchase the case from PC Spec along with all parts, ram i'd have to by a 4gb stick and switch out with the one i will have i guess? and maybe add my additional storage drives later on.

PCS only sell complete builds. You can add your own parts when you receive it (but check the warranty terms at item 7.8 here) but you must order a complete working build; and that means you must include RAM and a storage drive.

I think 32gb is overkill in most cases, I'd go 2 x 8gb.

The storage options don't make sense either, more commonly, especially keeping it below £1000 you would have a smaller SSD main drive for the operating system, then a bigger HDD for storage, which of course can also be used to install games etc on too. With the size of games these days I'd say 2tb minimum, ssd 250 - 500gb.

Also you could save 80 quid if you buy a licence and install Windows 10 yourself. Would upgrade the WiFi card to dual band also.

We've been discussing this on another thread. Be VERY wary of cheap Windows keys from eBay and the like - they are almost certainly illegal. Why would you spend £1200 on a PC and then risk it all on a hooky copy of Windows? If you want Windows you have to pay for it.

So caution advised. You can of course transfer an existing licence that you may have, and there are other legitimate ways to obtain it cheaper. But for the convenience of those unsure about this, I would recommend buying it from here with your build.

I probably will get a complete build and see what happens after that point. I thought i'll probably buy the same parts i already have and build this as a complete build and resell the parts I already have. Windows I already have a legitimate key which i'll be saving for when I do get the tower :).
But yes, I agree 32GB ram is overkill, but feel if I had it, I wouldn't need to worry about it later.

PCS build the system, they don’t sell individual parts - only as part of a system or upgrade to a system you have had built by them.

Indeed, PCS are system integrators, not parts suppliers. Note also that you can't use these forums to get advice about the components for a PC that you're planning to build yourself.

I'm sorry i thought I already established I'll be purchasing the build completely from PCS with windows included as I would like to keep the warranty intact too and did not realize when I posted this that It would have affects.
Any parts I own will be sold to fund this project.
This thread unfortunately keeps going off on a tangent on other components and is missing the purpose of the thread now. so back to the topic at hand please... I've made some part changes, including the graphics card. Advice would be great.

I know the price is slightly over budget, but I rather spend a bit more than spend less and be limited :).

Other question, is it better to have a larger storage drive and partition it? or have multiple storage drives? As I know i'll need alot of storage for gaming.

Ok, what monitor do you intend using with this spec, resolution & refresh rate or make and model

The 3060 TI will be a bit overkill for that screen, also if gaming from scratch I would really advise going straight to 1440p, which means 27” upwards, yes more cash but better long term.

if sticking to a 1080p screen then look at potentially saving cash on gfx card, 3050 and standard 3060 due out early next year.

it’s also 1.4 HDMI.

I see, i did not know that, would you recommend a monitor too? :) I'm planning for long term anyway since PCS have 3060's on preorder currently, it gives me time to look too :D/

It really depends on budget, desk space, then curved or flat screen preference.

There are a huge number of 1440p screens at various budgets, sizes, some even use the same panel although different monitor manufacturer.

this is a good resource for looking at screens and learning different things about them, such as VA, TN, IPS.

currently I do not have a desk or space setup for it, kind of will build the room around the pc? if that makes sense, personally I wouldn't go beyond 30"" as that would be too big.
Thanks for that recommendation, is there by any chance something at half the price range martinr36?

Not really, not for a gaming monitor
