Heat issues 5950X and 240mm AIO

I know I've already said this rig is great and everything and theirs peeps with more pressing problems, but i'm starting to think that when it starts to get warmer over summer i might have to down clock my chip to say 4 or below GHz not great! (and i have no idea how to do that atm)...but going by other reviews i should be seeing much much better temp results ...my room temp is a chilly 16c-18c..and seeing that im getting high 77c under load in this room..im thinking something has to be wrong...saw many tests now using different 240mmAIO rads and they seam to be all below 70c under load with overclocks higher then mine (4.5/4.6) and in rooms over 20c (sometimes as much as 24c) right first off i have a amd 5950x chip OC at 4.4ghz and the "Corsair H100x Hydro Cooler w/ PCS Ultra Quiet Fans" and i got the Artic MX-4 thermal paste too.....my Q is there a way to ramp up the fans more some how?......as PCS replaced the fans that come with the Corsair H100x so i can't change fan/pump speeds or curves as it can't be seen in ICUE and in speed fan i have no idear ..that prog seams scary to me..yes im a noob, be nice to know how PCS set up the fans/pump in the first place and how i can change their speed..cheers

The H100x is an older model of AIO and I am not sure that it controllable in iCue. It is generally recommended not to go for the upgraded paste with the Corsair AIOs, as they already come with high quality paste. Applying the Arctic paste means that the old paste needs to be removed and the new paste applied. This gives a chance for a poor thermal connection between the CPU and cooler.

well thats sucks :( so i can't change the pump speed then :( also im fine with the fans making as much noise as they want..but still stumped as to how to control them and their curve

What's the power draw to the package when at full load with the OC?

It doesnt have software support, no. Generally most people avoid it given its age and lack of control.
What wont help is you also choosing the arctic thermal paste...so corsairs preapplied paste will have had to been removed (higher risk of bad paste job for no gain)

Without knowing your full specs no way to try working out how it would of been hooked up inside without being there.

You would want an absolute minimum of an H115i Platinum or the new Capellix on that processor, the H100 weather x or i just isn't enough to maintain boost clocks. That would be the minimum recommended from PCS.

If it was speccing it myself though, I'd go for an H150i Capellix.

If you can't see any controls for the fan speeds I would expect that they are at 100% already - or following a BIOS controlled curve - but have you tried ASUS AI Suite 3? That would be the normal route to control fans using the Fan Expert section of that software.....

Whatever fans or pump are installed I would expect PCS to have them plugged them into motherboards headers and that would mean you should be able to control them using motherboard controls.

kicking myself for not going for the corsair H115i Pro XT...and no paste :(...i didnt see the H150 as an option..but anyway...so this setup is kinda lame for summer :( it says on the site that this AIO can get rid of 350W..but maybe PCS needs to update that, and the draw back of extra paste option used with AIO's.... because i didn't know that and thought the Artic MX-4 route would be better :(

also ill try the ASUS AI Suite 3 now...cheers Pilot

Sadly a large number of the TDP ratings on the coolers in the confugurator seem to be misleading in my uneducated view. I would rather go with recommedations from the gurus here than be led by the TDP's alone.

Just having a read on the interweb myself there - personally, I don't think your temps are that far off the expected range for your chip and the sort of cooler category that the H100x falls into. But when you factor in that your clocks and power aren't all that high for an OC'd 5950X to my eye (I really would love to know how the OC has been done!!) then the gang here are correct I'm sure in that if you want as cool as possible then you just simply don't have enough cooling strapped on.

For every degree increase in your ambient temp you can expect around a degree increase in your CPU too - so you are correct that it is going to get toasty in that case come summer. At 25 degrees you'll be in the low to mid 80's. But you shouldn't have to wind the clock back to anything like 4.0 GHz to keep the temperatures reasonable - still, you shouldn't have to be talking about winding them back at all......

Let me know what you find in AI Suite when you get it up and running.....

cheers yep so kinda missleading list in the configurator....i would of never thought of this cooler as an option if it wasen't for the 350W TDP..also it does say this in the blurb

Sounds great... but I have worked out and as you all have guessed still not adequate for such a beaffy chip..also i looked into Asus Suite..all fans are at 100 when temp is at 70C..and pump is at 100% all the time..so no more headroom sadly ..oh well im fine with under clocking over summer..it will still be fast at 4 or 4.2..cheers for the replays guys

Thats why I selected the cheapest cooler it would allow in the configurator for my 5900x (AMD Standard Cooler let the order proceed) cause my intention is to swap that out the day the PC arrives with a H150i Elite Cappelix 360mm AIO. That AIO was not available from PCS so I have it ordered from another vendor. All that said, apparently these Ryzens are designed to aggressively upclock within the 100º envelope so even with my 360mm rad I might see those temps....but my CPU will be running a bit faster when it hits them whereas yours would hit that temp at a lower auto overclock with your smaller older AIO.

There seems to be no question that better cooling would help in this case.

But, I do think it is difficult to directly compare OC results across the internet too. My gut says (for no good reason I might add) that the CPU for @davidmcnamara699 has been simply PBO'd or alternatively manually OC'd with some default setting that PCS know will work. This would maybe give relatively high voltages that will (importantly) provide some operating headroom and guarantee stable operation. Whereas the best overclockers out there can tap into that extra headroom and margin and get more out of their particular piece of silicon. The better the ratio between frequency and voltage the better the clock speed will be for a given temperature - or vice versa.

So I would say to the OP that if he is happy with the performance of his setup, then try not to go too crazy comparing your specific performance to the best result you can find out there on the web. The setups you may see might have been better matched to that particular set of chiplets and the comparison to yours might not be all that direct. Yes, I too can find some 5950X's out there with better temps and speeds than yours, but I can also find plenty at 4.4 GHz running at 90 degrees too! (EDIT - all that without even discussing case positioning, case airflow, paste job quality, PCIe or chipset comm traffic, etc, etc) What matters more is if the build is giving you what you wanted and need.

(Out of interest OP, if my PBO hunch is correct, then my best guess at your average voltages would be a VCore of around 1.310 V and core VID's of around 1.260 V with all cores fully loaded - ish. If you're bored one day have a look at HWInfo while your boosting and put me out of my misery!)

O11 Dynamic XL so I can indeed mount one in the roof. I've seen YT vids where roof mounting in this case did indeed seem to get better temps from the CPU compared to side mounting the 360mm AIO in this case and in either position the GPU temps were apparently un-affected (1ºc within margin of error). Usually in this case folks have 3x 120mm intakes aimed straight at the GPU.

However, I'm a stickler for feeding both GPU and CPU AIO fresh outside air so Side mounting the 360mm rad in this case would be my preference. I think the reason that people are paradoxically getting better temps by top mounting it despite it getting some pre-heated GPU exhaust is that the 3x120mm Side Fan mounts in this case are actually not intaking outside air conventionally from what on another case would be the front mounts but in this case that location is pure tempered glass. Instead the O11 'side fans' are pulling from the PSU side of this dual compartment case design. There is a long fan grille in line with the fans/rad in this position but I have a feeling the easier route for air is for the positive pressure in most fan setups in this case to push a lot of hot air into the PSU compartment via various hols and cable grommets and that warm air is getting recycled by the AIO Rad/fans on the side thats supposed to be pulling through the grille but is probably pulling a lot from the compartment in general.

A simple test/fix for this I'll do will be to fit the Rad/Fans in this position but attach a shroud to PSU side panel ducting air straight from the grille to the Rad/Fans meaning the fans simply can't suck air from the general PSU side of the case but can only suck cooler intake air in through the grille.

And I’m actually going to Push/Pull it too. Fan profile the hell out of the whole fan setup as well as the AIO to run the system as quiet as possible unless gaming.

The H150i supplied fans on the intake side of the Rad and some QL120’s on the Exhaust side of the Rad ( the fans visible inside the case) The intake fans on the intake side in the PSU compartment will actually do most of the ducting/shrouding work as they’ll end up with their frames no more than an inch from the fan grilles in the side panel.

thanks again for the replays.... so looks like a H150i is the key to putting my mind as rest then..as im kinda worried that if i don't do this the chips life will be short as running any chip can't be good for long periods at 80C-85C (summer heat temp prediction ...it could be more) anyway here's the HWinfo..... again room temp is 18C and PC is on top off a clear desk 1 foot away from corner walls and near a small open window..i couldn't think of a better placement in my house...room only has the 40" screen as other source of heat...also this info is after running cinebench r23 for it's 10min all core loop...side note did hear good things about this 360mm rad..... the Phanteks Glacier One 360 MP......but am sure the H150i is great and will do more then i need.

I’ve heard excellent thing about the Phantek also, a worthy contender. But yes, this is an absolute monster chip and need serious cooling to get to peak performance. 280mm Rad was the minimum recommended for the 3950x and the 5950x is even more crucial as it’s reaching over 5ghz on single core boosts.
