HELP NEEDED: SUGGESTIONS FOR MUSIC PRODUCTION PC

Hi guys,

I’m an absolute amateur with regards to understanding the ins and outs of pc builds but I understand it to be much cheaper and more efficient than purchasing a ready-built pc.

With that in mind I am looking to customise a PC specifically for the purpose of music production (if the budget allows then a decent graphics card would be ideal for some graphic design capabilities). My budget ranges from £1500-£2000 so have a decent amount to play around with. I am completely open to suggestions regarding each component so if someone would be willing to direct me towards an example build that fits my criteria or even just to give me a couple pointers it would be very much appreciated!

Sorry for the delayed response.

You can factor in a good GPU for that budget if you want to game or video edit or something. What are you requirements for GPU usage?

No worries about the delay. I have no intentions of gaming on this pc, it’s main purpose would be music production and potentially a little bit of graphic design on the side (nothing as intensive as video editing or 3D modelling). If possible I would like the budget to come closer to £1500 (obviously lower is great!) and if that means sacrificing on GPU I’m okay with that because don’t think it is strictly required for my needs. Was thinking maybe the NVIDIA 2gb 1030 model.

As an example, this is just using on board graphics on the CPU which are actually more powerful than the GT1030 which is very old now and was underpowered even on release, but the PSU gives you plenty of headroom should you wish to strap in a GPU later on down the line.

Would you reccomend going with the AMD Ryzen over an intel processor? Is there any particular reason for this or just personal preference? Thanks btw!

Better longevity, these boards support updated CPUs through 2025, the Intel's are a dead platform. Also better performance.

Hi again, its been a while and I have been absolutely loving this build but I think it's about time I upgrade my GPU for more intensive video editing and design purposes and figure it's the best time to purchase, could I ask which GPUs you might recommend to upgrade this build? Thanks, Will

None currently, they've stopped production, it's right at the end of the product cycle, they're way overpriced as in short supply and will be comfortably beaten by a lower tier once next gen are released in january.

5000 NVidia and 8000 AMD series are announced at CES in the first week of january, check back in then.

Ah that is a shame, so absolutely none on the market you would recommend currently? How much money are we talking about saving here and how drastic would the difference in capabilities be? Would my build still be supported by this next-gen? Thanks for being so responsive I really appreciate it!

You’d be paying hundreds of pounds more for less performance.

Unless you have particularly aggressive sexual tendencies or you're Irish that just makes very little sense? (fully intended as a LOL)

You don’t save any money at the same tier, you’ll just get a modern card rather than one that’s immediately replaced and with far more power

Would my build still be supported by this next-gen?
Yes, although you’ll be limited in tier by the PSU, you can upgrade the PSU if you wanted to go really high

hahahaha a very compelling argument, I'm only going to be going for a lower-tier (likely lowest tier) one as budget is around the £500 mark so PSU shouldn't be a problem. Do you think that's wishful thinking on my part or would prices start around there?

500ish will get you around a 70 tier which is a good option, not only as it has more raw power, but especially for video editing and design applications, VRAM is all important and the higher you go, the more you get. At the 70 tier you're looking at 12Gb VRAM or more which is far far better than 8Gb on the 60 tiers. I would say 8Gb VRAM these days is unquestionably underprovisioned for almost any use.

Awesome, appreciate the advice as ever mate, will return in Jan. I only figured it would be worth asking just for Black Friday/cyber monday sales but i trust that the savings arent even worth it considering the lack of supply you mentioned, can hold off for another month/2.

Nah, you'd need to be getting 25% off their normal prices which would be around 35-40% off their current prices for it to be remotely worth it

Nowhere has offered a deal actually worth it in value so far, I've been watching closely
