I need a new PC, and my absolute priority is Single threaded performance as I have a very large single threaded Database app that takes forever (>3 minutes) to run GUI sorts on my I7- 8700K (it's all sorted in memory - 0 Disk activity)
My other issue is physical space -Absolute max is 480 High and 450 deep, but if power switch/USB ports are on top of case I need space to get to them (Height <475) last machine I bought had a InWIN 805 Type C BLACK MID TOWER GAMING CASE which is a very tight fit, but has front panel switches etc, but it now has to go to a new home so can anyone suggest best current option? I am concerned about my choice as it seems to be getting slated in these forums? Ability to switch off RGB effects is definitely a ++

AMD actually beats Intel in single threaded now with 5000 series quite substantially.

Plus Intel 11th Gen performs worse than 10th Gen and is best avoided, they're terrible processors.

But a 5900x would be the CPU to go for.

"The strong single core performance comes in handy when testing with Photoshop, here the 5900X matched the 5950X and that meant it was 10% faster than the 10900K and a whopping 20% faster than its predecessor, the 3900X."

Even if you take the second set of figures, there is only 2% between the 5900x and the 11th gen Intel processors. That difference is in the noise, so no real difference. You then need to take account of the Intel security issues, thermal performance and lack of an upgrade path. The AMD then comes out on top. It would be best to look at a range of benchmarks (and steer away from the fan boys), as each benchmark will test different things that are also likely to be different to you use case. So far in his thread we have 1 benchmark putting the 5900x a long way ahead and 1 with almost no difference. When I had the choice recently, I went with the 5900x, despite many years of Intel in previous PCs.

In the RAM OC thread yesterday, i posted my scores from another benchmark, where my 5800X outperforms the 11900K in single thread (although within the margin of error imo), but... the 5800X isn’t the direct rival of the 11900K - the 5900X is

Just look at any 3rd party review:

I could go on and on. It’s impossible to rationalise with fanboys ;)
