Ok,

So DPD came through today, but I had to work... could only get my hands on it later - soooo frustrating! But I did get to play - and my purple theme was well stolen and improved on... so for fun purposes I came up with another. Will post the specs, should anyone wish to see, but judge now only on the weird aesthetic... it is a sublime piece of kit

Clearly I was torn between the Ryzen 3950X and what I went for, and I did have my reasons - it may still have been the wrong choice, but this will cope.

A few use cases. Primarily putting together CBT courses. Also make documentaries. And working on a project which requires lots of VMs, hence the excessive RAM.

Of course the odd game - I'm not an insane gamer, but I do dabble. The lighting is just cool lol.

Appreciate that Scott, and can absolutely concur that your advice is spot on almost always. My use case is a little different than most, though and I particularly need lots of RAM! I know I could have tightened the financial screws, and actually probably should have...

I'm not unhappy, and I always remember someone once saying to me, buying anything technological (car, computer, no matter) is like waiting to dive into a cold swimming pool - longer you wait, the warmer it will get.. sure... but the less time you have to swim.

On a budget of £2500 - what would you have changed, bearing in mind my use cases?

Would have gone Threadripper, would have smashed it to smithereens.

But even sticking to Ryzen 9, may have won out. There is another technical point - Ryzen at 7nm, consumes far less power for equivalent (or better) performance. And over the lifetime of the machine, that is not inconsequential in terms of cost...

Ryzen 3950x which is around the same cost would have been almost double the multithreaded performance, plus would have been much better in single threaded for gaming.

As usual sublime, and I'd be hard pressed to argue otherwise, and on price v performance absolutely no contest. But it is a business expense, which I depreciate over 2 years, the marginal differences are negligible.

I will admit, I had a certain aesthetic bias in what I could easily configure and so I made my choices. Human decisions are often more emotional than pragmatic.

Apart from mere performance, or performance per cost on the capex I still have two niggling concessions, which are seldom considered, and perhaps 3.

Sheer performance difference here is for the most part imperceptible, but:

1. the Ryzen does what it does way cheaper on power ( that's big, cant write that off in the business sense)
2. 7nm vs 14nm - massive technological difference, and advantage
3. 4 more cores... useful for my usecase

Not to mention issues with Intel, per se


All said and done, I'll get the job I want done, done. albeit it could have been done better. My old PCS beast (10 years old next month - where does the time go), now being retired to a server (and running my very own flavour of linux, dalix (no arrogance here lol) - is still exceptionally capable - amazingly so.


And I'll do well to be a bit less hasty in 2 years time.
