High-end PC Parts Check (i9-12900K, RTX 3090)

I should presently be buying a high end modeling PC and would be extreamly happy to revive any advice possible before I confirm my purchase.
Would there be any changes you would recommend, such as a different motherboad perhapse?
Thanks, I appreciate it.

Hi there! This looks like a beast! A few changes we could make to this. What monitor will you be using with this and do you have any specific budget? it's a lot easier to have a number to work towards

I have not a hard budget, though would rather it be under 5,000 at most. The PC will be more for modelling and programming then gaming these days. My main monitor is a standard 4k 60fps. Thanks.

I'm not too clued up on the requirements for modelling and programming so I've given the build a general balance. I'm sure another member of the forum will be happy to help out for the more specific needs

Case
CORSAIR iCUE 5000X RGB MID TOWER GAMING CASE The NZXT case is terrible for airflow so I've swapped it for the much superior 5000X. It is quite a large case just as a note so let us know if you need something smaller
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i9 16-Core Processor i9-12900K (3.2GHz) 30MB Cache
Motherboard
GIGABYTE Z690 AORUS ELITE AX (LGA1700, USB 3.2, PCIe 5.0) - ARGB Ready
Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 5200MHz (2 x 16GB) DDR5 Currently offers little performance gains over DDR4 so I'm not sure I'd spend the tonnes extra to get DDR5. I've kept it here, just worth noting
Graphics Card
24GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3090 - HDMI, DP This card is an absolute beast. If tonnes of GPU power isn't needed for either modelling or programming then the 3070 would really be the card to have for 4K 60hz gaming
1st M.2 SSD Drive
500GB SAMSUNG 980 PRO M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 6900MB/R, 5000MB/W) Reduced the boot drive to a 500GB model, it'll be all you need for Windows and programs
1st M.2 SSD Drive
2TB INTEL® 670p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 3500MB/sR | 2700MB/sW) Added a 2TB drive NVME SSD for everything else, you could also add a HDD for bulk storing inactive projects
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable
1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
Corsair H150i ELITE CAPELLIX RGB Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler The 12900K is a HOT CPU so really needs the best cooler you can get, this one will provide top end cooling while looking fantastic in the chosen case
Thermal Paste
STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING The Corsair coolers come with high quality thermal paste pre-applied so the MX4 isn't necessary
Sound Card
ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)

That is great thanks, I will change the case and double check the cooling. Thanks again.

Hey, hum, with a pc of this price, i'd go for the platinium warranty (or gold) ^^
Not really mate, most parts if they faulty are going to fail in the first year so the silver warranty covers that. Also enough to cover any of the usual hang ups when getting a new system like DOA parts or just system configuration errors

But for everything else pretty much every part has a manufacturers warranty of 2 years which you can deal with yourself afterwards.

Then again I understand the peace of mind the higher warranties have which essentially boil down to "I'll let PCS deal with it I have the warranty" but most of these things you can do yourself with a bit of tinkering

You can get away with a 1000W PSU but I'd even consider a 1200W for a 12900K and 3090 combo. Ignore the PCS advice that 750W is enough. It simply isn't.

The 12900K will draw 300W in heavy multi-threaded apps, the 3090 up to 400W, add another 100W+ for other components and you'll be seeing 800W+ of usage. The 12900K can hit 350W under stress tests (400W overclocked) and power spikes on the 3090s to 450W have been observed. A 1000W PSU is really the minimum.

Is your modelling or programming more CPU bound or GPU bound? The 12900K has taken the lead over the AMD Ryzen 5950X by a small margin based on initial reviews, but performance varies quite substantially between specific applications. It's the same with DDR5 memory. On some applications it performs better, others worse but it costs a lot more. It's very early days for both Alder-Lake and DDR5 and as an early adopter you may find issues crop up.

Honestly, I'd also consider the more mature 5950X and even 5900X, especially if you are more GPU bound. Alternatively a 12700K still offers good performance but is more power efficient and less thermally onerous.

Haven't there been some issues with 12th Gen Intel chips running on W10? Perhaps W11 would be better, although that is still new and has bugs that need addressing. It is brave being an early adopter on 12th Gen Intel, DDR5 and W11 all at the same time.

This is worth a watch on that subject

It's very much the same performance wise on 10 or 11, no issues on 10 that aren't present on 11.

Based on advice I have revised it slightly to spend even more on cooling. Thanks again for your help.

I would up it to 1200W HX PSU personally. That CPU swallows over 100W more than the 5950x, its ludicrously hungry. Also, the next gen GPU's have the capability of drawing an awful lot more power than currently, weather they will or not is unknown as yet, but the new PCIe 5 PSU connector can draw 600W off the one power port. I would overspec now with that in mind.

Also, drop the thermal paste, the cooler comes pre applied with higher quality paste.

I would also go up to the H150i Elite Capellix, it's a more modern pump and plate and generally a bit better.

And on a build like this I wouldn't cheap out on the motherboard, that chip is the hungriest and hottest desktop chip ever made, you really want the Maximus board.
