But that's irrelevant, it's out of support, doesn't receive security updates, so it's completely open, there's no protection, not even if you're using anti virus, can't do anything because the OS underneath is completely unprotected.

I'm afraid I can't give any support on Windows 7, as it's gonna be buggy as hell as it hasn't been in support now for 2 years.
Not wanting to be difficult or anything, and it's been at least a year since I installed Win' 10, but
All the time, after support of Win 7 ceased, I was getting weekly, if not daily security updates. I had to click a button to install them, which may well have been my own settings, or it could've been a Windows thing because Win 7 was out of support.

Fraid not, that was likely windows defender updates which are the inbuilt anti virus, that will still receive updates, but any AV is rendered totally useless because the OS itself is completely open to any attack vector.

It's the OS that doesn't get security updates, entirely different thing.

No, I can't say it any other way, unless you disconnect the PC from the internet at all times and never use it connected again, you can't use Windows 7 unless you pay multiple hundreds of thousands to Microsoft for custom support.

Nothing can protect windows from infection. AV is just a program that runs on the OS, but the OS itself is compromised, so it's like putting a bandage on a broken arm, it's not gonna do anything as the damage is already done.

Ok this is what i will do, Disconnected windows 7 pc from the internet and only use it only for documents.

My desktop I got from 2013 upgrade it to windows 10 (get a new desktop next year) May use this as main desktop plan B will be get a new Desktop from pc Specialist (budget £500-600 can you recommend me a build please? only be used for internet and Final Fantasy X so no major gaming)

Install anti virus program and change every password I have. Does window 11/10 have built anti virus protection?

One other question my mum have a very old android tablet but it still updates is this secure enough for banking etc?

It goes to show how little i knew and need to take security more serious, like 2 years late.

You need to clean install windows 10 as the OS is fully compromised. If you upgrade in place, any of the issues will remain, any viruses etc will all still be there, there's nothing you can do to fix it.

So clean install and then it will be safe.

I'm afraid Final Fantasy X is quite a major game and needs a lot of power, you'd be looking nearer £1200 for something basic. PC prices are sky high atm.

Does window 11/10 have built anti virus protection?
Yes, all Windows since end of Windows 7 come with AV included.

One other question my mum have a very old android tablet but it still updates is this secure enough for banking etc?
It depends what version of Android it's on. Any mobile or tablet is only supported for a fixed number of OS updates. Once it's on an OS that's out of support, it's the same as any OS, if you use it connected to the internet, there's no protection at all, and you can't patch it with anything, it's completely open to attack vectors. Any account you log on on it will be compromised and leaked.

PCSpecialist will be the cheaper legitimate offer I think because they're buying in bulk.

Allkeyshop.com is a grey market site, which means they're dealing stolen keys.

Can I install Linux and have windows 7 at the same time? I did see in the install of my PC that I can have Linux lint and windows 7 side by side or is this still a security risk. Hope I make sense, don't really understand it 100%.

Edit: say I have windows 7 offline and mint online, can switch between the two?

You would need to reinstall Windows 7 as your current one is compromised heavily.

If you dual boot linux with your current Windows 7, your Linux will become infected as well.

Until you erase your OS drive fully, it will not be safe for any use at all.

Once it's fully formatted, then you could dual boot Windows 7 (disconnected from internet) and Mint. But you would need to fully disinfect any data drives once the new OS had been clean installed as those will also be compromised, and if they're attached to an OS infected, then that OS just gets infected again and you're back to square one.

But you really need to ask yourself what is making you hold on to a dangerous OS that tightly, I think that is more the area that needs looking at. Modern programs will not be supported on Windows 7 as much as the OS itself is out of support. The amount of work that would need to go into getting the machine bootable with windows 7 which wouldn't be able to functionally do anything anyway without internet connectivity, begs the question, what is making it worth all that effort?

What is it that's making you want to cling onto it? Perhaps you're concerned some piece of software won't work on a modern windows? Maybe we can clarify?

I installed Win 10 Home about a year ago. It isn't that much different to Win 7. I just slotted straight into it. There are some differences in the user interface 🙄 of course. Some things are better, some things are worse. But it's a fairly smooth transfer in all honesty.
I can't remember the price I paid now, but it wasn't horrendous. I seem to remember something like £50, but can't swear to that. It is a Microsoft original copy, as far as I can tell. I had to scratch the cover off the key anyway. There doesn't seem to be much point in getting Win 10 Pro, there aren't many extras and what there is seems to definitely be aimed at pro users. Win 7 Pro had a lot of extras that home users could use, Win 10 Pro doesn't.
No need for AV with Win 10 either. Windows Defender is as good as anything else, built in so doesn't hog cpu, built in so free. And you can use something like Malwarebytes free as a backup, for your own peace of mind, if you like. I do, so do others.

Not forgetting you can upgrade your W7 to an equivalent version of W10 for free, the W11 that I'm using on the Berserker started out life as W7 on an old HP machine

When you say fully disinfect any data drives once the new OS had been clean installed as those will also be compromised. Do you mean my spare external drive that contain my movies and games or just the other drives on my pc itself? I did a fresh install on my one upstairs and wiped my second TB drive completely in mint OS. I am happy with the mint, its easy to use but not perfect, it doesn't recognize Sound Blaster Z amp but I have speakers spare that have built in amps.

My dad does not want me to install a new OS on his Desktop as hes used to it and does not want to learn how to use a new system, I tired to tell him its very easy to use (more simple then windows). It would not take me long to do it. Will my Canon printer work straight away or do i need to play around to get it working? I think hes also afraid that it would just mess the desktop, its an old potato of a computer bought in 2012 so it old but works slowly but it works. He just will use it for Documents that i really don't want anyone to have.

Edit: Its a i5-2320 processor. What is the best version of mint to work with it?

Does this make sense. this a learning curve for me, i may just fresh install it i just need to be confirmed it works on my system? any more info just ask.

re-reading it i think you miss understood, i want to put Linux on old desktop not on a new system. My dad likes to use it to go online, my dad is stubborn, im going to put Linux on now just hope it works other wise in in trouble lol. just backing data up
