Power_SW_P (phase?) Pin 6
power_sw_n (neutral?) Pin 8

It's black and white, I guess I better not mix this up unless I want to blow something
Is black Nuetral and white phase?

For anyone whos been as stupid,

Examine the underside of the power lead for an arrow or dot. If one is present, the marking signifies the first pin. This must correspond with the first pin on the motherboard, which will also be indicated by an arrow, dot, or number. If no markings are present, the lead can be installed in either orientation.

Edit: No signal to monitor or post beep, Pulled mobo battery out stuck it back in, works!

Don't worry about the LEDs - reversing the polarity won't damage them unless there's a very high voltage (which probably wouldn't do them much good whichever way around they were)

well led's dont work but pc boots fine, get a post beep windows loads etc etc, led's don't work though

They had a arrow on back indicating which went in the first pin numbered 1-8 IE pin 6 and 8 arrow would go in 6 AFAIK, but yeh think I've blown the leds as they don't work for hard drive activity and blue LED light on power button

edit: first time I took heat sink off and the fan off it and cleaned the grime out of it aswell as case fans and PSU also ran a few wires different etc and cleaned the tiny fan on GPU, took a ton of dust out of that beast, it's alot noisier fan wise now :D

Hi Len, only just got your PM mate - I'd alread left the office when you sent it. Glad to hear you got the PC working again, to be honest the LEDs aren't important as mentioned earlier in the thread. The main this is that the PC posts & works :D

I did take off the heatsink and clean it out took 2 hours or so but I re'aligned it properly and it's properly secured to the mobo (I didn't remove the paste which was dryed on guess because pc hadn't been used in weeks/months so when CPU warms up it should relube up?), weird thing is yesturday It was only reconizing 1 gig of ram, today it's reconizing both, no problems ATM but 10mins ago didnt get a post beep, if I get any more problems I'll give you a shout

what I have done is formatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows XP just gone through 77 updates an what I'm missing tho is the motherboard disc for the drivers, I've been looking through the internet and downloaded some lame arse driver programs that want you to upgrade to pro etc.. but I can't find the drivers I need

Motherboard: P4M900T-M2
Graphics card: Nvidea Geforce 8400GS (got driver sorted for this)
Onboard sound.. missing driver

im not sure what other drivers I should have I mean, my mouse works and keyboard and screen so I'm guessing its just sound one as it's not showing anything for sound.

Here y'are sunshine - http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Pr...x?DetailID=822&CategoryID=1&MenuID=16&LanID=0

Just click on the "Drivers" section at the bottom of the page - audio drivers there along with the other key ones including BIOS update if required.

[EDIT - meant to add that you need to download an app to check your CPU temperature. That old thermal paste is past it - once it becomes dry and crumbly, it needs to be replaced. It's okay until you disturb the CPU then it's almost useless. New paste will only cost a couple of quid and it's a doddle to apply]

You need to remove that paste lol, its useless once its been taken off from the heatsink as its now full of air bubbles and, well, dry.

If you check your cpu temps I should think theyre a fair bit higher than before.

The pre-applied TIM on the heatsink is only really useful for ONE application, anymore than that and it needs to be scrubbed off with some paper towels, with or without ArctiClean and then re-TIMed with ICD, MX5, whatever your fav thermal paste is.

I'll dl hw monitor and seek some paste this weekend, Any suggestion on CPU&GPU upgrades? It's a old mobo but I'm sure I can give it some more umph with a new CPU & GPU, It's a P4M900T-M2

CPU: P4 Single core 2.93ghz
GPU: Geforce 8400GS
It's got two gig of ram(ddr2) @ 667mhz I think

Just want some cheap effective upgrades so a friend can use that to play a few games with me, It'll run CS 1.6 but yeh CS:S is kinda jittery without a FPS config, It'll also play WoW on ultra low settings

edit: Thank you Pengipete I did look through that website quite a few times can't believe you found the drivers there

It wasn't the easiest site to navigate - it took more luck than judgement to find the right page.

Looking on the list of supported CPUs, you can use most of the Core2Duo's and they are cheap enough now that the "i" series is mainstream. An E6300, for example, will cost you around £55-60 new and would be a vast improvement over that Pentium - ignore the headline speeds when comparing a dual-core with a single core - a 2.0G C2D will easily out perform a 3G single core. I had a quick look on ebay and you're talking anywhere from £25-£40 for a used C2D - which may be your best bet. Just check which ones are supported on that same link to ECS website.

Memory-wise, the QVL for that board only list as high as 667 RAM so you may as well stick with what you've got. If you do want more memory, with only two slots and a maximum of 4Gb supported, your options are fairly limited. Assuming that you'll be using a 32 bit O/S and since the memory is single channel, you may as well buy a single 2GB stick of 667s - ideally of the same make & range as your existing memory. A single 2GB stick will cost you around £25. Otherwise, ebay again and you may get a bargain.

The board supports Sata2 so if you've got old, slow IDE drives that could be a cheap upgrade that would make the while OC feel a lot faster. Optical drives are also a lot faster and more reliable than they used to be and they're dirt cheap - Amazon generally has the best prices.

If it was my choice (and if I actually had any friends to donate it to :() then I'd go for the C2D CPU and a 7200rpm Sata2 hard-drive - well under £100 (maybe as little as £50-£60 if you get lucky on ebay) and you'd have a decent enough PC. If you want a laugh, paint the case pink or cover it with stickers - just to wind your mate up.

The only thing you may need to be careful of is that upgrading major components like the CPU may mean you needing to phone Microsoft (if you have an OEM version of Windows). In my experience, they're actually quite happy to give you a new activation code in such circumstances but there's no guarantee.

Other than that, it's a basic MicroATX board so there's not much you can do - it'll certainly never be able to compete with today's gaming PCs. If you fancy a challange however, you could build a pretty decent media centre using that as the base. It's small enough and the fairly open layout should make quiet cooling a doddle.

Any graphic card suggestions?

E6300, that's quite and upgrade I'll look around and find a cheaper one then this link though: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Intel-Pentium...6?pt=UK_Motherboards_CPUs&hash=item4aa8b907fc

Ram ddr2 667mhz 2gig,
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1G-1GB-PC2-53...erComponents_MemoryRAM_JN&hash=item483a2b67df
(£13)

I think so I'll make it 3GB of ram if I take out a 1GB and put this 2GB in

Graphic card recommendations? Also It's only a 300W/350W PSU
what hard drive should I be looking at? a spinpoint f3? or something that uses less power
