Aaaargh, why oh why do PCS let you amend your PC when you've ordered it? It's a nightmare! I've just parted with more cash to make my PC a bit of a beast.

What do you all think?

I'll be using a lot of intensive VST/audio applications at once - like full orchestral samples etc.

It would honestly not surprise me if I ended up with a Blu-ray drive and/or a 2TB Caviar Black too...

nice choice, I'd look at getting a set of homeplugs instead of a wifi card, they send internet through ya house wiring, giving you a constant boomin wired connection.

I know what you mean. Luckily my computer won't benefit much more from any extra upgrades so I can't part with any more cash!

You could always add a small 60gig ssd to the rig yaself, will give ya pc a massive speed increase.

Seriously though - how do Homeplugs work in simple language? My internet router is plugged into the wall in another room. It's a wireless router. I have an adaptor in a USB port which picks up the signal at the moment. If I add 1 x Homeplug to the order, do I need to buy anything for the router? Will the router still work on wireless if my OH uses her laptop in the other room? I don't want to hog the connection.

You need two homeplugs, one plugs directly into a wall socket then into ya router via ethernet cable, then you have the second homeplug, into a wall socket near the pc connected to the pc via ethernet cable. No you dont need to buy anything other than the two homeplugs, and it wont hog the connection mate.

So where it says Homeplug (£19) and 2 x Homeplug (£38), I'd need to go for the £38 option?

So let me get this straight, I have two sockets next door to each other. In one goes my router - pic attached - and in the other goes one homeplug. I connect these via an ethernet cable.

Then - with I plug in another homeplug near my PC, and connect it with an ethernet cable. No wires involved between rooms.

Am I right?

Sorry if I feel like I've repeated everything you said - just want to be clear!

yep the 38 quid set, note though, they are said to work best when plugged directly into wall sockets, also said they dont work well with power strips.

yep, one plugged into the wall near router connected together via ethernet. The other plugged into the wall near pc and plugged into pc via ethernet. I got a set as I had alot of drop outs with my wifi card. My homeplugs have never ever dropped out! :)

How does it work in terms of sharing the connection? How does the wireless signal still get sent out if it's connected with ethernet to the mains?

I'm not exactly sure how routers work when connected to multiple devices, however, its very common these days so I wouldn't worry about hogging the connection. I can game online with my lass doing her stuff online without a problem.

Think an SSD might be a step too far. Even an 80GB with the homeplugs comes to £130...

My £900 budget would have become a £1150 PC by that point.

Is SSD so essential?

An SSD is not essential,neither are homeplugs if you have a good wireless connection,
just my opinion.:)

It is not essential but speeds everything up. You can always upgrade/add the SSD at a later stage, prices for SSDs are falling and like Tom mentioned you can get SSDs 120GB for less than £80.

haha, my order started off about £700 and rose and rose until it ended up about £1300 ... then obviously one monitor and a normal mouse weren't good enough so there went another £200ish.

About the homeplugs though, they are great.

homeplugs aren't a replacement for wireless, they're a replacement for running ethernet cables. You're still using a wired connection using your houses existing electric cables rather than wiring cat5/cat6 cabling.

Homeplugs are a very good option (replacement) if you have a poor wireless connection & you cant for whatever reason connect your PC directly to your router with an ethernet cable.
