Why would anyone want to replace a wired ethernet connection with homeplugs,
the whole idea of them is to give the option of a wired connection through your domestic wiring,as opposed to wireless for people who cant connect with a straight ethernet cable.
Edit: I think we may be talking at cross purposes here,if by replacement you mean "alternative" to wired ethernet then I agree, but its also an alternative to wireless.:)

My wireless is reliable to the point of being connected without a problem for 10-12 hours a day without dropping, so I guess homeplugs may be surplus to requirements at the moment?

In terms of someone suggesting dropping to 8GB RAM - some of the orchestral libraries I will be using use 12GB RAM when everything is running. Unlikely as it sounds, I need 16GB!

Homeplugs is a more reliable option than wireless since it is hard wired, I have problems with 2 wireless cards in the past (edimax and TP-link) my connection would be ok for long periods of time and it would suddenly drop. Resetting the card and reinstalling drivers would fix it for a while.

Homeplugs speed are however affected by 'noisy' transformers and the like which are plugged in around your home. My wireless speed is much faster tham my homeplugs which is a bit of a bummer.

I think its because most people have thier modems next to thier tv and cable boxes in the living room.
My pc is in the dinning room about 12 m away so I had to buy a 15 m Ethernet cable because WiFi would be to unreliable for me where pings make a big difference during online gaming.
If there was the option of home plugs when I bought my pc I would of had them to make my life a lot easier:)

An SSD is not essential,

yeah you are right vanthus, but I love my corsair force gt, pc is flippin rapid to boot, will time my my rig the next time I turn it on, :)

I think at the moment its worth it, especially due to the relatively low price of ssd's 50-60 quid for a 60gb version.

So - I really want to stop messing with the order now.

Could you put my mind at rest and tell me this is a good PC please?

It's now in the 5th Working Day, and I feel that I'm running out of time to alter it before it goes into production.

(PS - can't afford an SSD at the moment. If there's any improvements to be made, it'd have to be £50 or less!)

Yes it's an alternative, i'm being a little bit pedantic but what I meant is homeplugs aren't a replacement for wireless because they're two different things for obvious reasons, homeplugs can't replace wireless because.. well they've no wireless ability. Homeplugs are an alternative wired solution if for some reason you cannot run an ethernet cable. Personally i'd never use a wireless card in a desktop Pc, i'd always find a way to use ethernet by either moving modem or running cabling therefore i'd never use homeplugs either. What nobody as mentioned is that homeplugs only work well if both sockets used are on the same ring, if you have a large house or maybe a house with an extension then the plugs are probably not on the same ring and it will be a terrible signal.

Also remember it has to be on the same circuit. So if your upstairs wiring is on a different circuit to downstairs then it wont work.
I think home plugs are aweful, really bad strength through the power lines. But then again i live in a really old house so the wiring is probably shot!

Sorry, but that isn't correct, they will work on different circuits,as long as the circuits are on the same consumer unit/fuse box,and one consumer unit is all the majority of people have. Here is some good information about homeplugs which dispel some of the myths floating around on the Net.

I have homeplugs, they are certainly worth it over wireless! I had frequent (very common) wireless drop outs as well as a much slower download speed.

To cut a long story short, I love my homeplugs, never dropped out once, gives me a solid boomin connection.

If it was my rig, ditch wifi and go with homeplugs.

I'm on 6th Working Day.

Monday - 7.
Tuesday - 8.
Wednesday - 9.
Thursday (pay day!) - 10.

Is that pushing it waiting that long before I add it to my order? Don't want to delay it too much. I'm in pre-production at the moment.

Remember that if you make changes after it has started building you will get charged an admin fee.
Given current times I suspect it wont have started build by then, however, this does not mean it wont happen.

Without wishing to suggest I'll be going elsewhere to get them, Homeplugs are one of those things I can add at any time, right?

So if I do miss the boat this time from PCS, I could buy them from another store and simply plug them in? No internal work to be done - just plug and play?

I wouldn't feel SO guilty doing this, seeing as they have £1000 of my money

Since it does not affect the building of your PC I don't think it would delay your order but you can always order it over the phone for confirmation. The home plugs are indeed plug and connect the ethernet cables to both the pc and router and you can buy them from a different retailer.

Yes, but if you're getting homeplugs then presumably you wouldn't want the wireless card - which is part of the build :)
