Just another noob scared of what he has built

I know the site makes sure everything works together, but I dont know enough about this stuff to know if it all makes sense..

my old faithful desktop has started to fail after 5 years, and my job has changed a lot, so could do with a big upgrade anyway.

I do quite a lot with large data files. put them through tools like rapid miner, weka and knime.. From wht i am reading, they just want big memory, hence the 32Gb.. I enjoy making stupid videos of Oculus games, but nothing longer than a few minutes each, so not sure i need anything too exciting for that.. The final use other than very boring email/word/spredsheets I am writing some very basic simple games for the Oculus, but nothing that uses any huge rendering etc..

Truth be told, i have over shot my budget by about 600 quid, so quite keen to figure out what I could compromise on.. i am confident in the 32Gb, and the 2Tb SSD but then I dont really understand the speeds and things enough to work out if i have a fast something thats not going to get its full benefit because I have a low spec something else.. or the real win would be I have added something thats for gaming and i will not be gaming, so could lower something and probably woulnt even notice..

Any advice or pointers would be truly welcomed..

This spec could do with some work, but we should be able to come up with something to suit your needs.

The current combo of CPU, case, motherboard and cooler is likely to be hotter than the sun and fail rapidly, those parts just won’t work nicely in tandem.

So… what’s the budget, what’s the monitor you’ll be using and will you be doing any gaming? You may not need a strong GPU if that’s not on the agenda 👍

Thanks both of you.. with me moving windows can bring the price down 100 quid..

Monitor is this,

Philips V-Line 273V5LHSB 27-Inch LCD Full HD Widescreen Monitor (1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz,1ms,300 cd/m², VGA/HDMI)

And I run two,. Would love to run three if that's plausible..

No gaming..

I would like to get closer to the grand mark, but could go up to the 1500 if I would see substantial performance benefits.

You can definitely make a lot of savings here. First, for your purposes the 5900X is way overkill. I think the 5600X will be plenty for what you need. It's worth then upgrading the motherboard (a bit), the case and the power supply (both by quite a bit), the memory speed and the WiFi card. We can also make the storage both faster and cheaper: we use an M.2 SSD as a boot drive (much, much faster than a standard SATA SSD) and then a traditional hard drive for the bulk storage (much cheaper than an SSD). We can then save money by losing the USB card, removing the Windows licence, and, most crucially, downgrading the graphics card. The 2060 is for gaming, and it doesn't sound like you're doing anything graphically intensive at all.

One option would be to get a CPU with integrated graphics. The 5600G should be available from August and would be ideal. However, it will only support two displays on that motherboard (and I don't know of any motherboard that supports more). So if you want three displays, you're going to need a dedicated graphics card. Your two cheapest options are the RX 550 2GB or the Quadro P400. Either would work fine, I think, both both will require adapters for those monitors. With the Quadro, you would need three Mini-DP to HDMI cables; with the RX 550, you would need an HDMI cable, a DP to HDMI cable, and a DVI to HDMI cable. I've suggested the RX 550 option as I think it will overall be a bit cheaper.

(I've also upgraded your mouse. No one should be using a mouse without back and forward buttons! Such a quality of life improvement.)

This is great, thankyou, does it deal with the concerns @AgentCooper has with my original?

I have a 2Tb disk in my old one, I was aiming to move over, guessing this configuration will cope with that too?

Yes, all of the components he mentioned I changed! This will be completely fine for temperature.

Yes, the disk will almost certainly be fine. What kind of disk is it? I'm presuming a hard drive? If so, I'd suggest losing the hard drive from the above build and using a large M.2 drive with the money it saves.

Yep, @sck451 has made you a nice system there. If you wanted a bit of extra luxury you could go with a slightly tweaked version of their spec:

Been trying to digest this lot..

all looking good, the only bit I dont really understand is the hard drive vs m.2 ssd..

the first m,2 around the 500GB - I am assuming that's perfect for installing the OS..

what is the main diff between the original 2TB SSD disk I had, vs say the 1TB m.2 SSD..

Think of it in terms of water pipes.....

A SATA SSD is like a regular ½ inch water pipe
An M.2 ACHI SSD is like a 2 inch water pipe
An M.2 NVMe SSD is like a 5 inch water pipe

Last tweak I think!!

taken @AgentCooper 's suggestion, and tweaked..

got my own 2Tb hard disk I'll shove in.. so thinking do I need the two ssd storage.. so took the smaller out and moved the big one to its place..

what have i lost other than 500Gb storage?? will the bigger disk give me the fast OS storage, but also faster main storage for the majority of things?

idea of the smaller faster M.2 which you've removed is to install the OS and programs on, with games on the larger not quite as fast one, so when you have to clean install the OS, you don't have to reinstall all your games as well

Its finally arrived!

and what a beast ( I know a lot of you have bigger and better, but for me this is the best I have ever had )..

no benefit of showing you a pic of the case, and you guys choses it!! but look at the inside.. love the look, and the wires all tidy and hidden away!

inside the machine.jpg

I have a few more questions if I could impose on your skills once more..

As we discussed above, I was planning on adding a SATA drive I had in my old machine.. where the heck do I put the drive!! and where do I plug ion the sata cable!

There is a fine mesh on the top, and the bottom, I gues sthats to reduce the fine dust getting inside, but is there a best practise how often to clean them, and what with!

Thanks again for everyone that has helped me get this far..

Just as and when, maybe once a year at the latest.

You can just use a normal duster or if you want to invest, one of these are absolutely superb:
