Laptop Build Advice.

I've never liked laptops but we're getting one to supplement our desktop.

This is within my budget so that can be ignored.

Are the Clevo cases of good quality? I've never heard of the brand before but I'm guessing they are premium when compared to a Dell, etc.

Will these specs be able to play AAA on low to medium settings?

Bump. Just after some quick advice so I can go ahead and purchase.
Clevo are custom chassis, they’re completely different to an off the shelf like dell or HP. You need to know how to manage windows and drivers, but you can customise all the components unlike on a dell so you can tailor it to your requirements. You’ll also get much more power out of a custom laptop for the price.

What are you using the laptop for?

What’s your max budget?

I see. I currently have a desktop I bought from PCS and update the NVIDIA drivers when prompted (is that the kind of thing you mean?).

I was specifically thinking of the Clevo build quality. Is the Optimum XI shell sturdier than the average plastic laptop? I'm not fussed by looks, I just want a good sturdy laptop that will last, if looked after, for the next 4-5 years.

The laptop will be used for internet browsing, large word files, very basic video editing (no photoshop or specialist editors). I would also like to use it for gaming. To put it into perspective I currently have an i3-8100 with a gtx1050ti and 16gb RAM, which I think is fantastic and plays everything I want to play. It would be nice to be able to play Cyberpunk and other AAA games (low to medium settings) on this laptop and connect it to my TV.

Max budget is around the £1000 mark. This comes in at just over so I'm happy to pay the difference.

I have an old Optimus IV (from 2013) that's still performing perfectly. The case does show wear where your palms rest and the touchpad too but otherwise it's perfectly fine. The Optimus isn't a rugged laptop by any stretch of the imagination, IMO it's no better or worse than the odd few Dell laptops I've had in my time. I would say the Optimus chassis (at least on my Optimus IV) is as solid as any other, but no more so.

As with any laptop you need to be careful to always open the screen from the centre, never the edges - but that's true of most laptops.

The only amendment I’m that I would make is the drive, you’ve got a slow SATA SSD, an M2 drive would be far better.

Thank you both for your input.

I don't need much space so I'm happy to take the 1tb SATA down to a 500gb M.2.

Regarding the case, it's good to know you've had yours for so long. Certainly gives me the confidence to buy.

One last question, what chassis sold by PCS would you class a rugged, just out of curiosity?

I had a Defiance II for almost 5 years. It traveled the length and breadth of the UK and sometimes other parts of Europe with me. It never missed a beat. Build quality was superb.
