Laptop experience issues after reinstall graphics card driver

I am not entirely sure what happened, but after I have reinstalled the Graphics driver (Nvida Experience keeps on insisting that the driver cannot be detected), the lap top will not boot, I cannot even enter into BIOS when this happens.

When I power on the laptop, the indication light for storage unit flash once and stayed dark, or when it does boot up, if the advance chipset setting is set to GPU only, it have this tendency to black out display afterward.

The driver version in question is the latest 560.81

Aside from rolling back to an older driver, anyone had anymore suggestions on trouble shooting?

P.S. Side question, If I am looking to use thermal pad instead of repaste, any one have good recommendations?

With laptops you always want yo use the vendor's graphics drivers. These drivers are often customised for power-saving and operational reasons, generic drivers from Nvidia don't contain these customisations and can cause issues.

rolling back to the the factory driver on the graphics card did not work.

I have reinstall windows in the end, thinkingnit might have been corrupted system files.

Things seems to have taken a weirder turn though, now the laptop has became very slugish.

Worked fine again after a restart, but the same problem of the laptop not liking the graphics card also persisted.

Device manager consistently show code 43 error on the graphics card, and I can't seems to get it fixed no matter what.

I would give PCS a call, that sounds like perhaps there's something up with the GPU

Have you repasted it since you've had it? The symptoms almost sound like sever overheating?

This hasn't been the case for many years on laptops, in the old days, yes, manufacturers used to release optimised versions, that hasn't been the case for a long time, they may release one when the chassis is new, but not after that and with GPU drivers, they update them basically with every new game release to include optimisations for those games, that's why they need to be updated so frequently if you're playing those new games.

I was going to soon. Planing on using heat pads instead of pasting. Researching on options on the pad.

It is 1.5 years old, without intensely used.

I'd recommend Thermal Grizzly Kryosheet, just one application and that's it for the life of the machine.

Check out @Scott thread on it, he's used it on a laptop as has @Martinr36

I've just stuck it on my desktop and was very impressed. It's just over the thermal capabilities of high end thermal paste, and never degrades. If you get one 50 x 50 sheet, that will do both the GPU and the CPU

I'd double check the thermals, it's possible it's overheating.

Last I check with 3D mark about 2 months ago, the result were somewhat within range, albeit on the middle to lower end, so even if it is overheating, it really shouldn't be this bad.

Currently I can't even check if the temps are ok on the GPU side it if I want to, the moment the laptop even try to use the graphics card, it either will not boot up at all or the screen blacks out.

I would give PCS a call then, does sound like perhaps an issue with the GPU.

Just found an interesting thing, turns out the laptop can use GPU when not plugged in to power supply and run on on battery, but as soon as I plugged in the power supply the screen blacks out.

So yea, definitely the GPU and is not overheating issue, as the it happened before the temps can even go up

I hope you are still under warranty; the cost of the RMA to replace the GPU, i.e. replacing the entire platform since CPU/GPU are soldered to the MB, will be nearly as much as a new laptop. :(

Just a heads up. The temps can go up instantly if there's a cooling issue, as in the paste has completely degraded. The power being in and just means more power is avaialble.

I wouldn't discount the temperature just yet. If you can check your temperatures on battery that will let you know if it's definitely power related. Pressing Fn+1 on my laptop sets the fans to max, it's worthwhile doing this to ensure that it's doing what it can. If the fans already sound loud then it suggests temps still.

Noted, but I can't even get to that stage to work that part out at this current moment, if I start the laptop in the GPU only config with power connected, the whole thing just won't start.

Plus a streak of bad luck just keep hitting as I go, since I am following instructions from PCS to trouble shoot, I got into the issue of the windows decide to throw the safe mode pin glitch at me, pretty much just forced me to reset my PC again, as I did not set up a pass drive or password.

That PIN issue is just that the PIN entry window is hidden, you can work around it by alt tabbing and blindly entering the PIN once the right windows has focus.

You can’t have a windows account without a password too. The PIN just masks the password through windows hello.

Well, I have reset windows already...so, may be next time.

The latest is PCS suggest to send the machine back for inspection.

So working to arrange for that at a moment.

Hopefully it goes well!

On the topic of NVIDIA drivers, I tend to follow enthusiasts who test every driver for performance, stability, 1% lows etc. The recommended driver by enthusiasts is actually version 537.58, although it is around 10+ months old at this point. I've been using this driver for a long time and performance + smoothness in every game is brilliant for me. IDrivers can sometime offer better performance on newer games and generally speaking it's good practice to update to the latest drivers, but for the past few years, GPU drivers have been very hit & miss on NVIDIA's end.

PCS had checked out the computer and decide that the issue was with the GPU as SpyderTracks predicted, they have to replace the motherboard in the end.

I am so glad it is still within warranty for parts!

Now I am just waiting for them to deliver the laptop back.

Yeah, that’s why longer warranties with laptops are so important as a gpu failure means full motherboard replacement which can be very costly off warranty. It’s a good thing it’s happened while you’re still covered.

As you’ve had the motherboard replaced, when you get it back, I’d suggest if it hasn’t been clean installed, then do a full clean of the gpu drivers with DDU and reinstall the latest ones.

Clean install would probably be a good idea too, but I get if you’re put off by that idea
