Lockdown - What's Worth a Watch?

Just got made aware of this one by work colleagues, hadn't heard of it at all, it's Adam Sandler, but not as you know him, a serious film with some good themes of loneliness / madness / love / trust, looks really interesting

It seems to have really split public opinion between people absolutely hating it and people really loving it.

But I love films that make me think, the ones that make me look for the underlying sub-text that isn't confirmed until right at the end, then you have to rewatch it to understand all those earlier easter eggs better that you missed first time round.

I didn't have the patience for it in all honesty. I wanted to love it, it started off pretty good but it dragged for me. Most movies I feel drag nowadays so I'm not sure if I'm climatised to modern pace or something like that.

It was well made though, the idea was good. Gravity it was not though.

I do find that quite a lot with modern films, there are of course outliers like Arrival (although not so new anymore)

I haven’t really watched many films for the last few years as a result, been more rewatching old series

Went to the cinema yesterday with the kids and GF to see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Same vein to what I mentioned before. I wanted a faster pace and something snappy hitting my nostalgic pleasure centre.... it didn't really land.

The more I think about it, I think Maverick might have ruined it for me. Nothing about Maverick was great, but the culmination of the entire production was nostalgia heaven for me. It was absolutely nailed as a nod to its predecessor and I'm expecting that feeling when I see properly defining movies from my past.

Don't get me wrong, Michael Keaton absolutely nailed it, he always does. I recommend the movie in general as it's decent, although a bit slow and predictable at times. They didn't try too hard to nod the original, but at the same time that may be a little bit of a downfall for us nostalgia addicts.

Ach... maybe I'm just old and grumpy. My kids enjoyed it. For the price of the ticket, that's what matters more in honesty. They did OK.... they just ain't going to be writing the 3rd script after a weekend IMO.

I think that’s what they’re really aiming for with a lot of these rehash type movies, it’s to entice the new generations to allow for further movies with different actors and keep that franchise rolling.

Like all the Disney real life reworks, to us 80s and 90s guys, it’s a bit of a sin, but as with black and white movies being a no no for me when I was younger, I guess maybe oldschool animation maybe like that for kids of today.

Beetlejuice I do think though is so utterly unique as are a lot of Tim Burton films, I’d hope that transcends any generational divides.

Totally agree with you on Maverick, that was seriously cleverly done to appeal across the entire age range, even my 88 year old grumpy father loved it and he’s really hard to please

The thing you have to remember with Maverick is that it wasn't all green screen, CGI stuff.....it is the actors in actual jet fighters:

Whilst the storyline wasn't the greatest, having the actors in fighter jets gives it something else..... you watch it thinking "that looks so real" and then search online and go "oh, it was real!" (well, minus the shooting at each other of course)

Absolutely, that was a complete stroke of genius and it really was the highlight of the production. Seeing the facial expressions was amazing, the camera perspective was fantastic and you really felt along for the ride :)

CGI has been getting a bad rap for a few years now, it's overuse obviously being the main issue.

I gathered that the more unrealistic manoeuvres and aircraft were effects based but not being able to discern the difference is important. My biggest grip with CGI isn't its over-use, it's the fact that it's become a shadow of its former self. CGI years ago cost so much money and took so much time.... but it looked good. Nowadays it's half baked which is what really detracts from the movies (case and point The Flash).

The Top Gun CGI I can get behind, but the practical effects are definitely what made the movie.

I don't mind CGI at all. As long as I can't tell it's there, then I can suspend my disbelief (no, that doesn't include Henry Cavill's moustache).

You wouldn't complain about something set in space, on the moon, or on another planet being CGI'd or filmed on a set in a studio, so I don't see the issue with using it.

Now, promising no CGI and then using it is a bit different though ;)

And as for the scene where the roof lifted off of the sentry post......

Watched The Substance last night with the Mrs. It's a very interesting watch. It's more of an artistic movie than is typically mainstream, so it will definitely be a bit marmite.

I really enjoyed it, the ending went a bit left field but the rest of the movie stirred very strong reactions and feelings from me (mostly of disgust, but there are definitely other emotions involved too). Some very obvious messages throughout.

It's like Benny Benassi - Satisfaction meets Irvine Welsh's Acid House.

I think it's worth a watch, there's a lot of nudity, it's not one to watch with the curtains open.... you have been warned :ROFLMAO:
