just done that and reset bios to default still happening but now screen just stays on but distorted, it's still unresponsive though.
This is the error.
display driver failed to start using microsoft basic display driver instead

I've just scanned back through this thread and I don't see anywhere where a clean install of Windows has been done? The 'display driver failed to start' error means just that; a software driver didn't start. Whilst a faulty GPU (or PSU) could indeed be the cause of that it would be wise to do a fully clean install from bootable media, deleting existing system partitions, in order to be certain that the problem now isn't software related.

Yes that's my next step. Something I didn't want to do 😭😭

Use Acronis or Macrium Reflect to image your system drive. If a clean install turns out not to help you can restore the system you have now. Additionally, with Macrium Reflect at least, you can mount an image as a virtual drive an access individual files and folders to copy data back.

Reinstalling didn't work still only happens in a game when plugged in. So could be a PSU issue or maybe somethings happening to the gpu under full load I can't see it being temps as its not getting that hot.

Just an update. Turns out the 1080 is faulty here's the reply from pc specialist. I decided not to go ahead with any repairs and bought myself a brand new MSI GT73VR old stock for £1150.


I have received your system and have confirmed the issues. It appears your GPU is faulty and requires replacing. Due to the age of the system, a new GPU will need to be purchased. The 1080 GPU is priced at £955. Alternatively, you can opt for a 1070 for £576.00 or a 1060 £385.00. Please let me know how you wish to proceed.

This may be a silly question but have you checked for any entries in event viewer?

Also, a handy tool for checking usage and temps in-game is MSI Afterburner. You can use it to monitor system usage and temps in the OSD.

Yes I checked everything m8. Sold the laptop as faulty got over £600 for it and bought an MSI GT75 7RF. brand new for £1350

Glad you got it SSD sorted in the end and many thanks for letting us know what the problem was. It helps us to tune our problem determination skills. ;)
