Looking for help with new family pc.

For the last 12 years we have had a desktop, originally built by pc specialist, which has served us well. It is generally used for browsing and we also have an exel spreadsheet on there there to keep track of finances. In addition I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 on there. When on holidays or trips away I have a decent camera and I process and edit the resulting raw images using this. In addition we generally video our holidays once our twice a year and I have used various free softwares to edit this, add music and pictures and then usually a different software to burn onto DVD so my wife, who is quite old school, can just slot it into our DVD player and watch at her leisure.
I think now the time has come to look at a new pc. I would like some longevity, the ability to be able to do the things we do now with the existing pc, plenty of storage for photos, videos etc but obviously looking for a smoother experience.
Instead of the free video editing software I will likely be looking to get something a little better but don't really want to go down the subscription route that Adobe seem to have nowadays.
In looking for ideas on the tips of build I should go for. I'm interested in seeing what sort of budget I should be looking for. I can afford £2000 to £3000 but would obviously prefer to keep costs down and don't want to pay over the top for what I'm be using this for.
Any starting suggestions would be welcome.

I have some questions about this because I am tempted to go down this route on a new desktop. I don't want to overcomplicate things but and I remember my son doing this several years ago and running into issues. I recall that whenever he was downloading anything it would automatically downloading to the much smaller SSD Drive which led to this getting rather full and the process of managing the whole thing seemed a bit of a pain.
I would anticipate my pc to have a large number of videos and photographs, SSD sreadsheets etc stored over a period of time, which is why I was thinking of an SSD of around 500gb to 1tb and an HDD of around 4 to 6TB.
Is there a simple way of managing this or any guides that anyone can suggest?

Should just be a case of designating the location of your key folders. For example, you can configure Steam to download all your games to the larger HDD. Similarly, you can change the default Windows config to have your documents, pictures and video folder on your HDD.

This is another build I was looking at. Not sure how it compared to my first one. I would need a bit of help with the monitor as well. I wanted one around 24", maybe curved screen but not essential. I understand getting the right monitor for the system is important so wondering what recommendations people may have.

This is quite a tricky situation to be honest. It's just the timing that makes the selection quite complex. I think in your shoes I would opt for an Intel DDR4 build. The DDR5 would offer slightly better performance but I don't think you would get the benefit from it with the costs getting a fair bit higher. The other choice would be to opt for an even more expensive AMD DDR5 option, but I don't think you have any real merit there as I don't expect you to want to be upgrading the system over the lifetime of it. With all that being said, I don't think you need to get up towards 3K to meet your needs.

Do you have any gaming wants at all? If not, then we can focus on the base performance with a good vRAM GPU offering for helping with encoding etc.

Here's the first crack at it, leaving your extras on there. Do you not already have a Windows license and MS office license that you can transfer from your old machine? Reason asking is it would save you over £200 in software costs.

Thanks for that response. I should clarify that when it comes to gaming I do play occasionally, but not as much as I used to. I recently played Batman. Arkham Knight but I had it for years beforehand. I have other games waiting to play but I bought a laptop a couple of years ago to play on when I wanted. So with this new PC I could potentially see me playing very occasionally but I'm not too worried about the absolute best performance. It would just be nice to get some of the latest games and have them playable on the PC of necessary.
Another thing that I'm mindful of is having a little bit of simplicity with day to day use of the PC. When I'm looking at stuff like this I'm not massively clued up. I tend to look a lot into things when I'm going to buy them forget it all afterwards meaning I'm probably asking the same things again the next time! However, if it came to managing 2 or 3 hard drives I would be prepared to look into what I needed to do so it was set up correctly. However, my wife, who is a total technophobe, uses the PC. She just died the things she knows how to do and if there's anything out of the ordinary that flashes up she panics and calls me. For that reason I don't want to have too much complication with day to day use. I don't know if multiple hard drives give any general issues that way. Your build is the first one I've seen 3 hard drives on so I'm interested in the pros and cons of that.

The above system has you covered for that level of gaming, absolutely no sweat. It'll do very well at 1080p and could even eek into 1440p, or 4k with light games. I wouldn't be concerned past that point though.

Specifically with the monitor, if the above selected one is placed as being your primary monitor I would spend a little more and get something a bit more accurate for your uses. The PCS offerings aren't typically the best, but if you are restricting yourself to purchasing from there and want curved I would opt for the AOC C24G2AE/BK at £152.

With regards to the drives, here's a brief rundown of considerations:

Primary Drive - You only want to house the OS and main programs here. Filling a primary drive with odds and sods makes it difficult to recover the OS etc should there be any issues. The last thing you want is to have to backup loads of data and files for OS issues. Having just the OS on there means you've only one thing to fix. It also keeps it running really fast, staying below 50% capacity.

Secondary Fast Drive - This is where you house your fast storage. Games and current projects for example. It means that your load times are drastically reduced. I would tend to use this as a cache drive as well. If you run out of RAM in projects, the faster the cache drive the better. Having this used for cache frees up the primary drive and keeps everything responsive. This can make a massive difference in larger editing projects and even with the speed of processing images.

Third Storage Drive - This is just mass storage. When you're finished with a project and extracted it, you'll only ever view it at real time so the speed of this drive makes no odds other than the original transfer time. Images, music files, video files, general document storage etc. Speed isn't of the essence here, they're oldschool, reliable and cheap per TB so always worthwhile having this type of drive.

Having good storage habits can make a world of difference in the longevity of a system. A place for everything and everything in its place, you can't go wrong

Thanks again. I know that you likely can't suggest any non pc specialist products or sites on this forum but what should I be looking for in search of a decent monitor?
I was also thinking about what you said about the windows licence. My old machine was built by pc specialist and had windows installed already. I was originally thinking in terms of getting a new one because I wanted to have time to look through the old machine to find pictures, video, music etc that I wanted to keep and stir in the new machine. Also my son has asked for the old machine. I don't think either is a compelling reason for not taking advantage of saving money. If I were to go down that route what is the process of loading windows and transferring the license? Is it straightforward? I'm pretty sure our outdated but perfectly useable Microsoft Office has a CD so I don't see an issue with that.

I'm not great with current monitor tech to be honest. With wanting curved I would probably opt for the below. I know the Dell panels are pretty good. I've opted for 1440p as for content creation it can have a big impact. The only issue may be the size as its 27"

With the old license. If you're looking to gift the system then it's maybe worth keeping it on. If you're letting him get his own license then the simplest way to transfer it is to make a Microsoft account on the PC. This will link the license digitally. When you log into the new PC using the credentials you will be given the option to transfer the license via a hardware change.

With regards to the system being non-licensed, you will still have access and use of it. Certain features won't be available. I think you have a month or so grace period with this. Coincidentally, this is a good reason for having the storage options. If you had a second drive with all your pics etc on it, you could simply transfer the drive without any hassle. Good to know for the next time around

I'm very tempted to go for this now. I just wanted to double check that, as far as my wife is concerned, the 3 hard drives don't impact anything. She can go online, visit websites, amend the spreadsheet I set up for her etc without her having to do anything else that she might view as "complicated". And is there anything else I would need to communicate to PC Specialist as far as seeing things up or will they automatically set it up in the right way initially? Then, if I need any support around managing the hard drives will I find that support really on this forum?
The other thing would be expectations around build time. I know each one will be different but are build times back to normal to your knowledge? Can I usually expect any delays?

I can't imagine either of you having much difficulty in honesty. There's a learning curve, but it's very gradual and pretty straight forward.

I would keep the desktop very neat and tidy. Have shortcuts on there to the various file locations. Once these were setup your Wife would simply double click them to be taken to the place housing the active files.

There are nuances, such as the difference between moving/copying a file and making a shortcut. This trips people up quite a bit but once understood it's childsplay.

You will always find support on this forum.

With PCS I would contact them to ensure that they put the OS on the 500GB drive. Otherwise they may put it on the faster second drive. They will put this on the notes of your build. Once you have received the PC if you open up "This PC" you will see the 3 drives. Any issue, you'll find help here no problem at all.

Like anything it can be daunting, but the benefits far outweigh any down side. Everyday is a school day

My existing monitor is 21" so I think I'll try to get a 24". If I post something on the monitors thread to get advice will that stay on there or will the post be moved back to here since it is linked. I've already had a couple of posts moved or deleted due to my poor forum etiquette. 😀

Just noticed this, and as a professional video editor/motion graphics designer, thought I'd chime in. Regarding monitors for editing, you'll want as big as you can afford/fit. It saves SO much time when you're not having to shuffle windows/panels around constantly. Regarding editing software, how about trying DaVinci Resolve: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/products/davinciresolve
It's free (unless you want the ultra bells-and-whistles version for £255, but the free version should do way more than you'll ever need). From my experience, using (and learning) a professional-level bit of software such as this is MILES easier than some badly coded, weird, amateur-level software (I'm looking at you, Microsoft Word and Apple iMovie!). And there are plenty of tutorial videos/forums around to get you started.

Frustratingly when I go to my saved quote the case has been removed. To compound things there doesn't seem to be a suitable case. Most don't have option for the DVD drive and some have other issues. ☹️

If you really want the DVD drive internal to the PC, you can order the Fractal Define 7 from another site and send it in with "send in your own case". It's really easy and the price won't be significantly different.

Or you can do what almost everyone does: get an external USB DVD writer.

Haha, yes. I had considered the external drive. I think the only reason I had for having it inbuilt is knowing exactly where it is when I need to find it and not having to wonder where my wife put it during her latest reorganisation. 😀

So, new case and no DVD writer (I found I have an old external one so hopefully that will still work OK. I also removed the monitor and speakers, thinking I can get them separately.
To be honest, with the case I just went up the range until I found one that was compatable. I don't really know if there's much difference other than the look of the thing. I would imagine they all serve their purpose ok. These are the updated specs now. I'll put it on here just in case anyone has any last minute suggestions, particularly around the case or maybe any suggesting around the peripherals.

The case is actually very important. It is crucial to internal temperatures, airflow and acoustics.

The options are slim right now, but from minimum to maximum I would look at these:

Focus 2 ARGB (Would need to lower to the 240mm cooler)
iCue 220T (as above)
Corsair 4000D
Corsair 5000D

The Define 7 is a great case when paired with an AIO, well worth considering purchasing elsewhere and sending in.

Thanks again. I had looked into buying the Define 7 elsewhere but the one I found cost £164 which was a fair amount more expensive than on here.
Based on the feedback you've given here I'm guessing this spec now looks OK. I think I will just have another look around for the Define 7 but I think I would be happy with this.
