Hi guys, my current build was built on a budget in 2017 by PC Specialist and to upgrade the CPU requires upgrading the motherboard, RAM, etc. My Graphics card is still reasonable (RX Radeon 580), but it is apparent I am better off starting from scratch as no matter what I am basically building a new computer.

I currently use two monitors, a 1080p 28" Asus and a 1440p 28" LG with Nvidea G-Sync. (I'll find the model numbers if it helps). I use my PC for work and gaming.

So, for work I am opening up about 20 Google Tabs, Spotify, Slack and Unity, which required a RAM upgrade last year. For gaming, I have been playing Phasmaphobia, GTA V with mods, Hitman 3, along with some VR which I'll touch on some more. Most games work fine on my current build but I occasionally turn my PC into a jet engine. Specifically in VR. I have the Rift S, and that can only play basic games on my PC, I noticed on Phasmaphobia, it stutters horribly and occasionally the CPU gets overworked and I lose use of my hands, which requires a full reset of everything. I did buy Half Life: Alyx, which went about as poorly as I was expecting, game works fine but I lose use of all tracking on the headset and hands. So a new PC is needed to play that.

In my next build, I am looking for a smoother VR experience, and I am looking to play games with Ray Tracing w/HDR. In future, I'll probably be playing games like Age of Empires 4, badly optimised Indie Games, messing around with mods and trying to experience more VR, and I'll be playing PC games instead of buying a PS5/Xbox Series X. I don't play a lot of games like Fortnite or Warzone where I am desperate for anything giving me a competitive advantage, if I play Warzone, I accept I am not going to win, so as long as my PC plays the games I want to be playing for the next x years with a easy time upgrading when the time calls for it, I am happy. My max budget is probably around £2,000 unless I can see a clear reason to spend more and I open to any suggestions in regard to what I might need or won't need.

I created this build with my GF who also recently got a new PC, it's pretty much the same build but with a lesser GPU due to price increases and her GPU being no longer available.

Thank you for the feedback.

I've used this input to look into the CPU choice some more and it does seem like I will get better performance with the 5800 CPU with gaming, so that was an interesting discovery. It does look as though this CPU is one of the best available.
And the 3000 series GPU seem a much wiser step although stock levels concern me and I worry I will never get one.
Thank you also for the alterations to the hard drive and wireless as I had not realised the HD was not SSD and can see I left the Network as default by accident.

The feedback has been very helpful.

Hi guys, this is my second attempt at a build. I was looking for some suggestions to get the best value for money in terms of the build I am getting. I was hoping to use some suggestions from the mid-high end from the sticky posts, but it appears to no longer be available :(

I am looking for input in specific areas I guess, such as the CPU. At first I optioned for last gen Ryzen 9, but it does appear as though the Ryzen 7 5000 series outperforms those. So am I best sticking to 5000 series, and is the 5600 or 5800 the best option for me? I prefer the 5800 but when I read reviews it mentions it being required for streaming, etc and doesn't sound applicable to my needs, for just work and gaming (and not at the same time lol) am I throwing away money getting the 5800?

Looking at the Motherboard, is this the best option for my needs? I can see it includes a faster network capability, which is great as I will be using Ethernet, not WiFi, but is it redundant if I get a Network card which is equal or better?

I am thinking of going with Nvidia cards over the AMD graphics cards, as they appear to be the better option, but is there an issue with AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU I need to be aware of, I think I read earlier in the year that some people had issues. Other than that, I will choose GPU dependant on how much I want to spend. Probably sticking with 3000 series unless somebody can advise a better long term or short term solution. Mostly, I want to stick with Nvidia because of GFX Ray-Tracing and monitor has G-Sync.

This hard drive layout was suggested and I think it makes sense, 1TB of fast m.2 gaming hard drive for my priority games, although I can see me using the HDD still as 1TB is a bit limited. This looks good to me, but I am still open to feedback to improve it, especially in choosing the right options for hard drives. And any feedback on the cooler options etc are much appreciated. I am looking to keep the PC for as long as possible and maximise value for money, but I am open to upgrading in future, I upgraded the Ram and CPU on my current PC from 2017. I got that for £800 from PC Specialist and it lasted me 4 1/2 years, so I'd be looking for a 10 year lifespan I guess, but like I say, I'll upgrade as it becomes necessary

The 5600x vs 5800x argument is a popular one. For your multitasking needs the extra cores is worthwhile. You mentioned needing a RAM upgrade previously, while 16GB should cover you for the vast majority of games, certain heavily modded titles might mean you need a little extra, but that is something quite easy to add in down the line. The PS5 and Xbox Series X have 8 cores, so having 8 cores should cover you for AAA games ported over from console, as many have a reputation for being poorly optimised (e.g AC Unity, Cyberpunk)
GPU-wise the 3060ti would probably be go-to pick, but it is currently unavailable at PCS and indeed most of the UK. The 3070 is a little more expensive but it will let you crank up the graphics settings and still get good frame rates, and will handle VR nicely too. The 6700XT is another option here, but with RT specified as one of your needs we'll probably have to wait for the next generation of GPUs for AMD to compete with Nvidia in this area.
Storage wise, you can always move games you're not going to play as much onto the HDD, and have the games you play regularly on the SSD. Storage can change with personal preference, but the setup Martin gave you is good value for money.
Cooler is a great pick, the 5800x can run very hot so the Capellix will look after it nicely.
Ethernet is always going to be faster than Wifi, the AX200 card does offer Bluetooth support, but if you know you're going to have a wired connection you can drop the card.

I've gone over a few revisions and am almost ready to buy.

Firstly, changed the case to the 4000D. I want the 5000D, but my desk section where my PC is going is only 48cm deep whereas the 5000D is 52cm deep. If anyone has a solution which isn't buying a new desk, I am all ears.

Kept the Processor, seems to be the best choice. Changed the Motherboard to a X570 which seems more future proof than the B550.

I have increased the RAM to 3600, I hear mixed things about compatibility with motherboards. But it looks like the 3600 should be compatible with this motherboard and the price between the 3200 and 3600 was minimal.

Kept Martin's Hard Drive plan in place but upped the speeds for the gaming SSD.

Lowered the PSU as 850 seems overkill as a 650 should be sufficient. 750 should provide ample future proofing for a new Graphics card in future.

I did upgrade to the H150i when I was getting the 5000D case, but now I need a smaller case I also need a smaller cooler.

I am currently using a RX 580, and will look to upgrade the GPU in about a year to something better once availability becomes better. The CPU is overkill for the GPU now, but this set up should set me up nicely to either get a 3000 series or a 4000 series GPU in the future without issue.

Just a few notes, the X570 TUF is more than adequate for handing the 5800X, I would worry about the case selection and cooler though. The 5800X runs really really hot so I always recommend the best cooler available which is the H150i at the minute. I'd also worry about temps inside the smaller 4000D with the 5800X

Also the PSU is great but if you plan to put a 3080 or even a 3070 in there you'll be close to your power limit, I would honestly say you'd be safer with the 850RMx

Also the RAM if it's mostly for gaming then there is no difference between the 3200Mhz RAM and the 3600Mhz RAM, the only benefit from the 3600Mhz is in production based builds that will be rendering or creating models. Producing music, etc.

If you were to keep the same storage this is what I would want, mostly tailored to gaming

I am severely disappointed that the 5000D doesn't fit on my desk. I am still looking into other options for getting the case on the desk.

Cooling reviews doesn't look too bad for the 4000D, however, if I added a H150i cooler it needs to stack at the front and not on the top. Whereas the H100i fits the cooler and fans on the top of the case. So getting a different case, might still not fit my desk, whilst getting the H150i will result in the cooler stacking vertically at the front of this case. If there is a solution, then I am all ears. Getting a new desk is something I am considering. I have come to realise that this desk is not quite the computing desk I though I was purchasing.

The RAM... Mostly for gaming, but I work off the computer too, so lots of tabs open, lots of programs open (including Unity and tools to share builds remotely with the office. The difference in price was minimal between the two sticks.

The RAM... Mostly for gaming, but I work off the computer too, so lots of tabs open, lots of programs open (including Unity and tools to share builds remotely with the office. The difference in price was minimal between the two sticks.

Don't get me wrong the 4000D is great too, I always recommend it when looking at cases in that price range. That paired with the 5800X and the H100i is enough to keep everything under wraps and nothing to worry about. It's just the few recommended changes I suggested would be more optimal, but hey with computers there's always something that could be more optimal.

I don't want to discourage your selections either they would be suitable and hey on the RAM if you think you'll benefit from the 3600Mhz then go for it

Your build is solid, I was just firing in more suggestions to make it more optimal. The only thing that I would say to keep though is the 850RMx PSU. The RMx is made with better components than the other versions which lets it run much cooler and quieter, it'll also last a really long time most likely outliving the rest of the components in the build

I have been weighing up lots of options and watching loads of reviews, looking for existing builds, etc. I think all the comments here help as it gives me something to focus looking into. I too was concerned about the 5800x being a hot CPU so I will look into it.

It's hot, but an airflowy case (like the 4000D) and an H100i should be enough for it. I'm not saying the H150i would be necessarily a bad idea, but it's not truly necessary.

I am awaiting some confirmation from PCSpecialist now on the case.

I want it in White because I am being picky haha. But also, the case comes with 2 fans, one at the front and one at the back. So I wanted to purchase the 3 fans to take up the three slots on the front, but the website doesn't let me because it exceeds the number of fan slots. I want to replace the one in the case for the 3 RGB Corsair 120mm fans (It is a straight swap), but I'll need them to let me make that selection in the build before I can purchase.

Barring any major issues now, this seems to be the build I am set on.

If I had the desk space, I would get the 5000D and H150i.

If you want the case in white you would have to buy it yourself and have it delivered to PCS, they do offer that service

I also know that will change out the fans no problem but you will have to contact them and discuss it

That's brilliant, because that is exactly what I emailed them and asked them if I could do :) I figured they could if I asked and arranged it. And the extra fans will help with cooling the 5800x.

I am glad I can get the case delivered to them lol, I was hoping I didn't have to get the case sent to me and then send it to them myself. I am sure they will give me the information for this when they reply.

256GB is tight for the OS drive. I would go for 512GB and offset the cost by selecting a cheaper 1TB m.2 drive, if necessary. The Intel 670p seems to be a good balance between price and performance and, unlike othe Intel drives, has decent write endurance. Don’t buy a different Intel drive, as they have poor endurance.

I have the coolmaster 500m case it appears on pcs configuration now and again and a h115i capellex top mounted and it keeps my 5800x cool tho the room heats up so will save on heating in winter ;) a decent airflow case and a above average aio will satisfy the 5800x beast !

Quick question.
If I upgrade to 32gb of RAM, am I right in thinking that there is an issue with the CPU/Motherboard or something like that when using 4 sticks? Or is that a different issue that wouldn't affect me.
