My 15,6" Ionico review

Hey guys, just posting my review of the 15' Ionico I just got a couple of weeks ago!

Config:

10th Gen i7, 10850h
RTX 3070 max-p
1tb SSD
16gb ram

I won't get into much detail, but it is pretty much the same config available: https://www.pcspecialist.ie/notebooks/ionico-15/

So, I'm not a pro reviewer, so take this 'review' with a grain of salt, but all I can say is that it's very honest :)

I had great first impressions. When I did the unboxing and held it in my hands, I was first impressed by the quality of the chassis, not sure why, but on my researches and reviews I read, it seems to convince you that the tong fang chassis feel a bit cheaper than the rest, reason why you would be paying more for the performance rather than the looks.

Well, I can see where they are coming from. Just as reference, I have a Macbook Pro and an Acer Predator Triton 300 at home (don't mean to flex, they are not mine, but I have tried them lol), so I was expecting something less "premium" than those, obviously.

However, I was really pleasantly surprised, my first reaction was on how compact the Ionico is, and the second part was that I couldn't believe there was a max-p 3070 in there lol, I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it, at the same time it feels super light, it also feels very solid, don't know how to explain really, but it was a great first impression. Also, it looks and feels way better in person than in the pictures ;)

I have played a few games so far, and again, nothing to complain, just having fun really, been putting those settings up high and having a blast lol. The fan noises are loud, but it's just as loud as on the Predator (I'd say the Predator is louder even) and doesn't get as hot, per my experiences. Despite being loud, it doesn't bother me at all, I think it has a weird effect on me as I even think that it's getting well cooled off, so noise-away haha

Not sure what else to say, but I'm very happy that I paid around 500 bucks less than what I would in a name-brand laptop with the same specs and got a super compact and elegant machine (ps. love the gray finish, which is very similar to the mac, that doesn't leave fingerprints, so it's always looking nice).

On a side and personal note, again, I'm not a specialist (had to do a pun, sorry), so I knew that 11th gen was coming and even saw the Ryzen option on other models here (should a Ryzen option was available on my unit, I'd probably pick it though), but in practice, I know that these specs will take me a long way both for gaming and productivity, even though I will be using the machine mainly for gaming, so I was aware of the choice made. The 3080 also felt a bit overkill for a laptop and my use case. Really happy overall, if you decide to go for an Ionico, I hope you have the same impression as I did and just enjoy!

Cheers

Can you measure the fan noise by chance? Just with a dB app on your phone. Interested in this machine but the fan noise makes me skeptical... Does it make noise when ideling?

I have an ionico 15. It is quiet when idling, cpu sits around 40-50degC. sometimes the fan spins up a bit when left in game mode but seems to stay quiet in office mode, not sure if temps are lower as I rarely ever leave it in office mode / igpu. Obviously noisier when gaming.

Hi Phil, so, I did a test with Resident Evil 8, very high settings, during gameplay I could tell the difference between it being mid fans and high fans (it varies). With a db app opened in front of the keyboard, during mid-noise fans, I got 46db, and during the high, I got 51. Does that make sense? If these numbers look off to you I can try again. Also, on idle it's quiet (unnoticeable to me), but I haven't used it in a super quiet environment yet.

Cheers
