My First Gaming Laptop

I've now had my gaming laptop for 2 years, it's the first Laptop/computer I've ever owned for myself. When I bought it I didn't know anything about how or what made a laptop work or what would make a good gaming setup, I still haven't got a clue on what makes a good laptop, so I just picked items that looked like they would work and added it to my laptop.

This seems to have worked as it turns on and hasn't exploded on my so far. However, I have noticed that on some games I play, mostly Squad, my FPS is in the low 40s and frequently into the low 20s.

Secondly, any game I seem to run on my laptop, even down to the simplest solitaire game, the CPU temperature reads a constant 95°c and the GPU reads around the same temperature. The fans spin close to 5000rpm, Yes I have bought a fan cooling stand but thatisnt doing alot for the temperature.

Any advice on if this is normal due to the specs I have or if I can do anything better to maybe reduce temperature or increase FPS I would much appreciate it. I will post specs below.

Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™ i7 14 Core Processor 12700H (4.7GHz Turbo)

Memory (RAM) 16GB PCS PRO SODIMM DDR4 2666MHz (1 x 16GB)

Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 3050 Ti - 4.0GB GDDR6 Video RAM - DirectX®
12.1

1st M.2 SSD Drive 1TB SOLIDIGM P41+ GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 4125MB/sR,
2950MB/sW)

Could you please post the full spec?

When was the last time you serviced your laptop? Sky-high temperatures and a huge drop in framerate suggest heavy thermal throttling due to overheating.

First, remove Norton, which is now considered a malware. It slows down the system and provides no additional protection compared to Defender.

Second, laptops require maintenance to keep their performance level (which is quite low with a 3050 anyway).

You need to open the chassis regularly to clean accumulated dust (I do it every 2-3 months at most) then remove the heatsink/fans every 12 months or so for a deeper cleaning and repaste CPU/GPU.
I strongly suggest you to service it ASAP and replace the standard paste with a Kryosheet thermal pad, which lasts virtually forever.

Even without the thermal throttling, you’re going to struggle to get any real performance out of that GPU when gaming, taking into the consideration the game of course.

AAA Games these days are using more and more processing power and the 4GB you’ve got is nowhere near enough. We’re getting to the stage where you need three times that amount.

Yep, I'm already struggling with new/AAA titles on my Ionico with a 3070ti 8GB

It is criminal how low NVidia allocated VRAM below the 3080, it was never going to be enough. Developers and AMD had been highlighting this for years

True, but I am not a big AAA gamer, so performance in games like FM, HOI4, Wartales, and similar is still fine to me.

To play heavier games I'll need a desktop again

No, I know, not blaming you at all

We should be able to trust a manufacturer, especially the likes of NVidia who have the power to dictate the market, it's their responsibility to not cut corners so needlessly.

But they keep on doing it at every opportunity.

I completely agree with that. (y)

I hope they improve their mindset with the next gen.

It would be amazing if we saw 12Gb VRAM at the very bottom end, with 16GB on the 70 tiers.

I know that's dreaming but that is very much where it needs to be according to game devs
