Need help with specs of machine and best way to connect to monitor

I used a monitor with two video input ports and connected the DP one to my PC and the HDMI to my laptop docking station. When using the laptop I selected that as the video source on the monitor and when using the PC I selected that as input to the monitor instead. My previous monitor would auto switch so the laptop would have to be off when using the PC and vice versa; my current monitor doesn't auto switch so I can have both running at the same time and select which I am using via the monitor. All seemed to work well with no hit on performance.
In addition to the two inputs into the monitor, I was using a Microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard bundle so just had to move the dongle to whichever machine I wanted to use.

@AlaMid Thank you for confirming that...as I said, laptops are an area I lack knowledge in and KVM switches not at all ( I literally just went on Amazon and found one by a brand I know offers decent products)
No problem, only time I use laptop is for work, so when we started working from home with limited desk space (and I get RSI/Gout in my wrists using laptop keyboards) I told my manager I needed a switch box, that is the one I picked.

I don't use both laptop and desktop at the same time, I finish work, shut down laptop, boot up pc, press button on switch. voila!
