New Build Advice

Hi everyone,

Im after my first computer, swapping from apple. To be honest I have little to no idea what I am doing / talking about however I am slowly trying to learn and get to grips with all of this.
I am looking for this build to last as long as possible before I have to make any big changes - by that time I am hoping I may have some idea what I am talking about.

Monitor - I have not selected any monitor and looking for recommendations. For work purposes I will require two and curved screens do not appeal but any suggestions? - Max budget is £500 for both monitors however I can get away with just one for the time being can put £500 towards one monitor and buy the second further down the road.
Uses - Probably 70% will be work - I work in finance so a lot of things open at once (excel word etc) various crms open at once and some analysis software and trading with music in the background or film.
-Gaming will be AAA games - Microsoft Flight Sim, RDR2, CoD, Cyberpunk. No doubt I will be lazy and try to play these games without closing everything else down.
-Needs to connect to WIFI.
-Does not need to light up like a Christmas tree - Unless I can change the colour to something more subdued.
-No need for keyboard + mouse.
-Do not have Microsoft operating system already.

Max Budget - £3300 + £500 for monitors. Total - £3800.

I have no idea if I am overspending or even have a build that is compatible so apologies if the build is all over the place.

There's a strong argument here to say "don't buy your PC now". In all likelihood, in the next few months there will be 9000X3D CPUs and 5000-series graphics cards out and they will offer a substantial performance gain. If you are able, I would hold off till then. However, maybe you're in a rush if you need the PC for work purposes. If that is the case, here's where I'd look with your budget.

First, monitor. I would spend more of your budget on a monitor. It will outlast the PC if you choose well and a good one will be amazing. The outstanding candidate to my mind is the Alienware AW2725DF, which is £779 right now. It is outrageously good. 1440p, QD-OLED, 360Hz (this is kind of stupid, but will be amazing), HDR, etc etc. I would then get a much cheaper display, probably also 1440p and 27", to match it: you don't need two identical monitors, but two the same size and resolution will be nicer. Incidentally, you shoulld also desk-mount the monitors on a dual arm monitor stand, rather than having them sit on the desk itself. That should put your monitor total in the £1000 range. (This might sound ridiculous, but it is genuinely the best option in my book.)

Then I would look at a PC in the £2800 range. Here's what you might get:

Case
CORSAIR iCUE 5000X RGB MID TOWER GAMING CASE More discreet than the 5000T and can be configured to be subtler
Processor (CPU)

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D 16 Core CPU (4.2GHz-5.7GHz/144MB w/3D V-CACHE/AM5) I doubt you actually need this: the 7800X3D is probably all you need, or you can wait for the 9800X3D/9950X3D when they come out soon
Motherboard

ASUS® ROG STRIX X870-F GAMING WIFI (AM5, DDR5, M.2 PCIe 5.0, Wi-Fi 7) This is overkill (the B650 Tuf would probably be enough), but it will offer plenty of upgradability for the future
Memory (RAM)

32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 16GB)
Graphics Card
16GB ZOTAC GEFORCE RTX 4080 SUPER TRINITY BLACK EDITION - HDMI, 3 x DP A very strong graphics card, though again, 5000-series is on the way
1st M.2 SSD Drive

512GB SOLIDIGM P44 PRO GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 7000MB/sR, 4700MB/sW) Boot drive (going to 1TB wouldn't be foolish)
1st M.2 SSD Drive

2TB SOLIDIGM P41+ GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 4125MB/sR, 3325MB/sW) Games/work drive
Power Supply

CORSAIR 1200W RMx SHIFT SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET Overkill PSU, but very, very capable and will be able to take any level of upgrade you can conceive of
Power Cable

1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead, 1.0mm Core)
Processor Cooling
CORSAIR iCUE H115i ELITE CAPELLIX XT RGB High Performance CPU Cooler Really good cooler
Thermal Paste

STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING

That looks great and thank you for the advice about everything. I did just have a few questions -

When I click to proceed with the order it comes up saying -
'Please note that, due to a lack of USB connections on your selected motherboard, one or two of your front USB ports will be disabled.' Have you ever had this come up before?
- How much of a benefit do you think there would be for waiting for the updated CPU and graphics card? Would they likely be that much superior?
I noticed you dropped the RAM down from 64 to 32, was that due to just not being needed?

Thanks for all of your help?

The USB issue is because the B650 and X870 motherboards do not have enough USB headers.

The X670E or X870E have more USB headers and more PCIe lanes for expansion.

AMD are pulling the wool over people’s eyes by renaming the B650 level motherboard as the X870, when it’s really a B850 (I.e. just a B650 with USB4 + WiFi 7).

Until PCS offer the Asus X870E models, the only options are the Gigabyte X870E boards -unless you’re happy to forego USB4 + WiFi 7, as then you could go for an Asus X670E boards.

Did you change the case, @MatthewStubbings161? I don't get that comment when I go to build it, and moreover the board has the appropriate headers for that case.
Not yet, so I am guessing that is the reason.

I noticed you dropped the RAM down from 64 to 32, was that due to just not being needed / compatable?

Well unless you have work requirements that are extreme (3d modelling, video editing etc) you don't need 64GB, and it's expensive.

They will probably offer a 10-20% performance increase at about the same price, or the same performance for cheaper. That's a guess, but it's about where they've landed in past generations. I wouldn't want to put nearly £4k into a system and it immediately be outdated myself. It won't be bad, but it will no longer be top-tier. On the other hand, it could be the end of January before they're all on shelves and you might not want to wait that long.

In either case, it would be a strong system with a strong upgrade path.
