New Build feedback

Hi all,

Just wondering could I get some advice on the below build. I've been saving for this build for a long time so pretty excited. I was going to build it myself for the first time but with the way everything is this is much more practical at present.

The PC itself will be 99% for gaming @1440p but I'm trying to future proof as much as possible as I'm still quite new to the world of pcs.

I've looked up all the parts and think this is a good build but open to suggestions

The only things I'm not sure on are the CPU, CPU Cooler, RAM & PC CASE( for best airflow )

Thanks

You say 1440p -- what monitor(s) will you be using? The 3090 is really overkill for 1440p (and pretty much everything else, to be fair...)

I wouldn't recommend 240Hz then, unless you've played at that for a while?

99% of people can't notice any difference over 120Hz, that's why competitive players are paid so much money, they're literally superhuman. To most people it makes absolutely no difference.

I'm really into competive shooters so any advantage would be great.( should of stated this in thread)

Would u change any spec on the PC . Is the case and cpu cooler good ones for cooling ? Or is there better ? Also as its dream build should I go 5950x ?

Thank you

I understand that, but what monitor have you played on to date? What refresh rate? And on what system?

To give you some idea of the difference between 144hz and 240hz it’s about 2ms if you were one of the 1% of humans that could even tell the difference.

Hi all,

Finally saved enough to afford my first mega PC. big time gamer, FPS, strategy, AAA titles etc. This pc will mainly be for gaming and maybe some streaming too.

Monitor ill be using : ALIENWARE 27 GAMING MONITOR - AW2721D.

Aim of pc is too future proof as much as possible and to have a great pc for years to come.

Be great to get some advice on the below as i'm no expert on PCs. As i'm looking to future proof should i upgrade to 5950x ? Also what is the best case and cooler for good airflow as i want to avoid high temps.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as looking to order this week :)

Thanks

Sorry to bang it home again, but have you experienced over 144Hz before? Do you already own that monitor?

If you have and know that you benefit from high refresh, that's grand, but if not, it may make more sense to suggest a different monitor. When you say you play competitive games, do you just mean FPS or do you mean in a league or something actually in competitions?

Just wondering as a lot of people don't understand high refresh rate and are swayed to it by youtube influencers who are simply making money for stating stuff weather it's best for the customer or not doesn't matter to them.

I'm not trying to throw a spanner in the works BTW, just trying to ascertain your needs.

A lot of people hear that 240hz is somehow better in all circumstances. It's just not true. There's a reason professionals get paid millions per match, it's because they are quite literally superhuman and have eyesight and reflexes that can benefit from higher refresh rates.

A lot of people (usually coming from console) thunk that higher refresh is better visual fidelity, that's totally inaccurate also, it's purely about reflex response for the 1% of humans that can notoce a difference above 120hz.

I'm just trying to gather if you're one of the 1% or just leaping to 240hz being better without understanding what that means.

Either way, if you are a competitive player, then you would need a higher spec gpu to reach the higher frame count.

If you're not a competitive player, then you'll find a superwide or 4k 144hz monitor would give a far better gaming experience.

Your spot on. I do come from a console xbox background. I've only experienced 120fps on xboxsx @1440p and no I don't play competitions but am highly competive and love fps games. I've owned my brothers old pc for around 2 years now (1060 3gb i57400x @1080p). I've wanted a super pc for ages now and 1440p seems to be the sweet spot of fidelity/performance. I've only been using a 24inch 1080p monitor for around 2 years as previously was playing on 55inch 4k tv with xbox x. I would of bought this type of pc few months back but other things came up. I know I'm spending alot but I'm trying to future proof the spec as I don't have the skill set to start upgrading things at later stage, I know I will need to at some stage so I want to eleviate as much as possible. I did look at 4k monitors but there also expensive and feel 1440p is just right, it will also probably look way better than 1440p on sx. Hope this explains my thinking process and thanks for responding I can see you replied a few months back as well 😁. One thing is the factual case the best for airflow and temps from all the options ?

It's up to you, 240hz is really not what it's cracked up to be at any resolution quite frankly. The ones that benefit from it reduce graphical settings to the lowest possible, that's the whole idea with competitive play, they don't care what it looks like, only to get the highest frames possible. But that's for those people where 2 nano seconds difference is the difference between a £200,000 second place and £1M first place prize because they can respond within that timeframe, where mere mortals haven't even noticed any change.

1440p is great if you have a mid range budget, but at your budget you can easily afford a high end system, so you're compromising the build for that 240Hz, and the likelihood is that you won't notice any difference from 144hz to 240Hz. So you'll be paying a massive premium to get the 240Hz badge when you could have spent far far less on a 144Hz monitor and lesser GPU for EXACTLY the same experience.

And be careful of "futureproofing" when it comes to GPU's there's no such thing. The idea is that you match it to the screen that's going to give you the best performance for your uses, then when performance starts dipping below what you need, you upgrade the GPU. For the rest of the build, we would always spec it to the 7 - 10 year lifespan for any build at any budget.

Also, be aware that "ultimate graphics" is a meaningless thing. PC gaming is all about optimising graphical settings to get the best performance / graphical experience. You always find with any game that reducing a couple of usual settings down to high does absolutely nothing to the visual effect, but significantly increases FPS. But all benchmarks are set with Ultimate graphics. So you will get more performance than what you see in benchmarks.

In my opinion, if you're primarily playing FPS games, a 4k 144Hz monitor would give a greater visual experience at this budget while still being highly competitive. 4k 144hz monitors are expensive, but not much moreso than the 1440p 240Hz monitors you're proposing which come at a huge premium as they're quite niche.

Before continuing, just have a read of these, and be as informed as possible. Then whichever you decide, we'll spec something suitable. I just want you to know what you're choosing rather than basing it off meaningless numbers.

Thanks very much for this information still not sure on the monitor but will definitely rethink it. As you said GPU needs to be changed more frequently to keep up with tech Maybe I'll get the 3080 instead and upgrade to a 5950x

So it wasn't released until November but even then you weren't able to actually buy one until about March this year due to stock issues globally.
My bad well I got in 2020 so must of been December time. I stayed up late trying to order on multiple nights but didn't get any luck. In the end I joined a forum similar to reddit that it's in Ireland and people who had pre ordered that no longer wanted it were giving there order numbers away and I ended up driving half the country to collect one from argos .
