New build for Adobe Premiere Pro/Cities Skylines 2

HI all,

A bit of a random combination of computer usage in the title there, but I genuinely use my PC for video editing and specific casual gaming, and the game I'll be playing the most in the coming year is Cities Skylines 2. To give you an idea of the recommended spec for Adobe Premiere Pro, it is:

Intel 7thGen / AMD Ryzen 3000 series
4 GB of GPU for HD workflows and 6 GB of unified memory for 4k and higher resolution workflows
A fast SSD for storage, app installation, and cache
1920 x 1080 display (Display HDR 400 for HDR workflows)

Cities Skylines 2:

Intel Core i7 9700K / AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
16 GB RAM
Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti / AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT (this seems overkill, and is acknowledged as such in the community that it's likely to be lower)
SSD recommended

I have two monitors already (not great, but they'll do), and don't need keyboard/mouse. I will need a Windows 11 installation. I'm on a fairly limited budget. My current set up is as follows, and was bought from this very website in 2012. It's slowly giving up the ghost, even after a few upgrades:

Intel i7-3770 @ 3.40GHz, 4 cores
16GB RAM (1333MHz)
2TB SSD drive
AMD Radeon R9 390 8GB

-----

OK - now on to my first attempt at a budget spec that will fulfil my fairly basic needs. I've undershot with the GPU because as suggested above, many gamers in the community are suggesting a 6800 is massively overestimating the eventual needs of the game, and I'm not a huge gamer elsewhere. Can't justify splurging £300-400 extra on a GPU I'll use for one game. Suggestions welcome for improvements, especially if it lowers the price from £930.00. One final thing to mention, playing Cities Skylines with full graphics is NOT a deal breaker. I use the PC far far more for work and video editing than I do gaming. If I can save significant money by not playing video games on it with full graphics, then so be it. The min spec for CS2 GPU is Nvidia® GeForce™ GTX 780 (3GB) or AMD® Radeon™ RX 470 (4GB) for context:

I can't recommend a build for those uses for that budget unfortunately. If I completely forego the utilisation and just opt for the budget in mind (£1k) I get the below. Notice that I've had to remove the Windows 11 license just to get close to the budget. You can transfer your current license to the new PC, we can help with that also. It doesn't matter if it's Windows 7 or 10 that you currently have, you can still get Windows 11 using these.

It's one thing trying to get the big headline parts in a recommended spec, I would never spec a system without supporting hardware though and the cast you have selected is sub-par IMO (Case, Motherboard, RAM, Storage, PSU, cooling).

If you're happy to completely under-power the Adobe requirements then you can go for the lower end CPU. This won't be the best experience in editing but it'll do the job. The 3060 should help prop that up though. It'll just take a bit longer with your renders etc. Again, it's just a saving in processor grunt, the Windows license would still need sorted out to stay in budget.

Thanks for the replies - that's really helpful and has given me food for thought. £1,000 wasn't a firm budget, but I do need to be in that ballpark.

Apologies for starting a second new thread in as many days. My budget has increased significantly, so didn't want to muddy the waters on the old thread.

Basically, I'm after a good 'all-rounder' of a PC that can deal with Premiere Pro video editing, home office use, but also play games at a decent level if I so wish. I've never been a prolific gamer, but the games I do enjoy tend to be quite needy on the PC: Cities Skylines, Flight Simulator, games like Skyrim etc.

My current PC, from PC Specialist, is 12 years old this year and is still working remarkably well. Whilst I can't possibly ask anyone to endorse a system that will be relevant in 2035(!), one of my key criteria is getting a futureproofed PC - or at least one that could be upgraded years down the line if I wanted to keep things fresh.

My absolute budget is £1750, but would happily go lower if I can. Can I improve on this, that is exactly £1750?

What monitor will you be gaming on? Resolution and refresh or the model number is fine.

With the increase in budget I think I would look for a current AM5 system rather than previous generation. Intel 13600k is also worth a look though, with the media creation in mind.

Monitors are my major weak point that I've never bothered upgrading given my basic video editing and occasional gaming habits, but I'm seeing that as something non-urgent that I can upgrade in the future.

Please don't laugh, but I'm currently working off a dual monitor setup of:

ASUS VE278H 27" (1080p) - 2016 model
Samsung 2333T 23" (1080p - 2010 model

So yes - even 1440p gaming is out of the question for now, but if and when the time comes to upgrade the monitors, I'd like my system to be geared up to deal with it.

MaltonSeadog

Silver Level Poster
PS - more than happy to slightly reduce my spec (if you think I'm overshooting), and leave some budget for a new monitor (keeping the ASUS as a secondary monitor).

There's just no point in over-shooting the GPU past your current requirements. Even taking a future monitor purchase into account, you would need to be lining up a monitor within weeks rather than months or years for it to make any sense. You could go and spend £500 on a GPU right now which would be the equivalent of a £300 GPU in a year or so, it's absolute diminishing returns so you always buy the GPU in line with the current requirement. When you do want to upgrade, you simply put the money saved towards a new GPU solution at the same time.

With everything in mind, the below is where I land. It'll be a very competent media creation rig, especially with the 3060 in play, and it'll smash any 1080p gaming requirements. You've got the best gaming platform and a solid media platform in the 7800X3D.

If you decide to opt for a new monitor down the line, just post back for some advice on what to go for etc. For entry 1440p you're looking at £300 for a monitor at the time of writing. If you wanted something special like an ultra-wide, you'll be around £500. You'll be around £600+ for a well paired GPU so if you budget £1k for a proper upgrade that would do the job nicely. You'll be able to sell on the current GPU to soak up some of the costs plus the £100 saved right now.

That’s really helpful, thanks! To be honest, seamless 1080p gaming is probably my reality and hopes for the next 12 months whilst I pay the rig off!

Can I ask why the two SSDs? I currently have a 2TB and am nowhere near filling it. Is there a tangible advantage rather than a single drive?

The faster smaller one is for your OS and programmes, the larger and slightly slower one is for your games, having 2 drives like this will make things run smoother, also if at any time you have to do a clean install of windows, you don't have to worry about downloading and reinstalling all of your games

You get a speed bump as well. The drives connect independently so when you're doing something on both drives, they both run at full speed. Since Windows is on the primary drive, it's always doing "something", so when you do something on the second drive, it's not queuing up drive process time :)

For me, the main advantage has always been the ability to wipe the drive on a whim though. I used to have a tiny to-do list for formatting the drive. It involved sorting the drivers and installing a very small handful of programs. Much more convenient when not having to re-install 2TB worth of games.

Hi all,

I have a PC in pre-production, with the following key components (I've shortened it for readability and relevance):

Case
CORSAIR iCUE 4000X RGB TEMPERED GLASS MID-TOWER ATX CASE
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Eight Core CPU (4.2GHz-5.0GHz/104MB w/3D V-CACHE/AM5)
Motherboard

Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 5600MHz (2 x 16GB)
Graphics Card
12GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3060 - HDMI, DP, LHR
Graphics Card Support Bracket
PCS ARGB GRAPHICS CARD SUPPORT BRACKET
1st M.2 SSD Drive
2TB SOLIDIGM P44 PRO GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 7000MB/sR, 6500MB/sW)
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ - MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Processor Cooling
CORSAIR iCUE H100i ELITE LCD Display RGB CPU Cooler

Now originally I had the non-RGB ready version of the ASUS TUF, and suddenly realised that without an RGB-ready motherboard, I may not be able to make full use of the other RGB components in my PC. I went on PCS chat who recommended I upgrade to the Motherboard listed above.

I'm still confused though, as some of my components are ARGB. Does this mean I won't be able to use them to their full potential if I "only" have an RGB enabled motherboard? I'm having real trouble figuring out how all my RGB/ARGB components will be operated, and whether it'll be good to go out of the box when I receive my PC. First time with any RGB stuff on a PC, so excuse my ignorance!

Will I need to upgrade my mobo again to an ARGB ready one?

ARGB means addressable RGB as in controlled by software.

The B650 plus that @Scott had recommended has 3 x ARGB headers in the top right, and then a standard RGB header for strips.

The H100i has it's own controller built in.

So you'd have plenty of headers with the config that @Scott suggested, no need for the expensive X670

Yeah, that's some pretty strange advice you've been given. Always come back to the forum to speak to enthusiasts. You'll find the sales team looking at the heading information the same way as you do, rather than having off the top of the head knowledge like us geeks tend to.
