New build for gaming and work

Hi folks, thank you in advance for any guidance!

I need a new PC to replace my trusty rig that has served me for the last 7 years. I'm all about future proofing and ideally want this set up to last me another 7!
I will require the new rig for high end gaming and rendering/architecture work.

I've recently bought a 165hz, 1440p monitor, and will potentially be looking at a 4k monitor in time when the prices become more reasonable for good refresh rates.

I think what I've put together is pretty solid, but I'm a little out of touch with the latest hardware so any advice would be appreciated. My main concern is any bottlenecking and cooling issues I may encounter.

Many thanks.

Hey there!

Just to hep out our expert folk a bit more, what's your budget? :)
budget is flexible tbh, initially I was looking around the 2k mark, but after discussions with friends I've been convinced to allow the extra 500 ish for the premium stuff. If something is truely going to be worth the extra money, I'm open to it, but at the same time I dont want to overspend where I won't notice a huge difference. Might not be the most useful answer, but its something haha :)

There's nothing major to change. However would go with the H115i cooler when its back in stock, an 850W or 1000W PSU instead to give you some more headroom and the silver warranty for the extra fiver.

thank you for your response! main difference I'm noticing here are storage upgrades? would you mind explaining the benefit in having 2 M.2 drives?

I agree the cooling and power upgrades will probably be worth it in the long run!

thank you for the feedback, I will make those upgrades, someone else has suggested the same.

The original build didn’t have a WiFi card. If you need one the AX200 is the go to card and it has the bonus of Bluetooth

I wasn't the initial recommender of these changes but can explain the M.2 drives. (I also recommend these changes)

M.2 drives are effectively tiny SSD's that are plugged straight into the motherboard for super fast storage. The speed of a standard 2.5 inch sata SSD is about 500-600 for read and maybe a bit lower for write. Where as the lastest and fastest M.2 SSD's boast speeds of of 7000 read and 5000 write which is over 10 times faster in some cases. Now these are VERY expensive but they do come down in price over time as the technology improves. And of course, as they plug into the motherboard, they require no wires which is useful for cable managment.

There are 3 main types of M.2 SSD's
SATA: Which are the same speed as the 2.5 inch drives only the form factor is different
PCIe Gen 3.0 These are very fast and what I feel are the best bang for the buck right now. Speeds of around 1500-3000 depending on the one you go for
PCIe Gen 4.0 Very new and unbelievably fast, speeds of like 4K plus? As they're so new, not many motherboards support them but it's slowly being rolled out across them.

I think the idea for the drives recommended was:
1st M.2 SSD: (a PCIe 4.0) 500GB For Windows OS
2nd M.2 SSD: (a PCIe 3.0) 1TB For games and and applications
1st Storage Drive: 2TB HDD For other files that won't need instant fast access like documents, photos and music

A great video that might be worth checking out if you want more info is this one:
This is also another interesting one that's worth a watch too

You’re going to want the strix for that cpu. You’d probably get away with the TUF, if you had a 360mm AIO, but pcs don’t sell them.

ah thank you for the explanation, makes a lot of sense.

I was wondering why a 500gb m.2 would be needed just for the OS? Seems it's not due to the size but the speed the 500gb offers?
Would you recommend just having the OS on this drive, or a couple of my high profile rendering applications on here too given there would be space available?

It's totally your choice! You could if you wanted to, the only reason I might advise against it is if you need to re-install windows at all, you'll also have to reinstall them too, where as if you put them on the 2nd M.2 you won't need to re-install

had some points of discussion on a previous post, but think this will be my final build.
I'm looking for high end gaming and high quality rendering software for business.

165hz 1440p monitor & flexible budget has got me to this point.

My main concern was future proofing the rig, but I feel I'm close to maxing everything out to avoid bottlenecking so should have all bases covered?
Looking at ordering today so any final feedback would be much appreciated!

Many thanks.

Gaming wise that 3080 is overkill for that monitor
yeah I'm going to be looking at upgrading to a 4k monitor in the future when they become a bit more affordable for decent refresh rates. The 3080 is also going to be very benefical for running my architectural renders for work so I'm happy to splash out on it

I had wondered about that which is why i said for gaming, I used to do a bit of very basic cad myself when i was working (y)

MrWilson

Godlike
Gaming wise you could probably get away with the 3070, but as you've got the budget and haven't compromised elsewhere, and you're happy for a long wait (around 100 working days), then by all means go for the 3080. With rendering it is the case of as much GPU power as possible so it will be worth it.
With the 5950x it's well worth upgrading to the Crosshair motherboard when it comes back in stock, as the board has better VRMs to handle the monstrous 16-core CPU.
Upgrading to the RMx model PSU is also well worth it for only £13 extra.
That should give you an absolute monster of a build that most of us mere mortals can envy :ROFLMAO:
