Replacing a PCS laptop bought in 2017 - want it for general use + gaming with the aim to futureproof the system as much as possible. As I’ll want to keep this for another 3 years before upgrading again

There's no benefit to 32Gb for your uses, unless you have something specific?

From what you've said, gaming is going to be the most RAM intensive and it just won't use the extra 16GB in the lifetime of the machine. Currently the most used in a game running on windows with a browser open is about 12Gb.

But otherwise looks ok, personally I'd have one M2 for OS and games and another drive separate for storage, then you can format the OS drive if you need to without disturbing the data drive.

I’ve just noticed on my current system (16gb) running over 8gb ram makes the fans run a bit louder and for the extra £60 thought it would be worth mitigating that and for the extra future proofing peace of mind. Though I get it’s not really necessary for my purposes

RAM usage has no effect on fans, that's CPU and GPU only.

Ah ok, that makes sense. Will be interested to see how the new vyper model handles The 10th Gen processor in terms of cooling and overheating.

Badly will be my guess. Nothing to do with the chassis just the general state of Intel at the moment. If you are in no rush it seems a 17.3" AMD model should be available in the near future. Given the way Ryzens are outperforming Intel in everything it would be worth waiting to look at it.

Absolutely, given the choice of intel (impossible to cool plus low performance) or AMD (more performance generally plus running at half the tdp) I wouldn’t hesitate to wait for an AMD laptop, they’re just going to be streets ahead in every area.
