New Gaming PC is only playing Fortnite at 60 TPS

Hello - my son purchased a new PC last week specifically for Fortnite. It was sold as offering up to 142 FPS. But we are only able to get it working at 60TPS. The monitor is 144Hz. We have chosen the closest Fortnite server. The sound cuts out a bit as well while playing.

We're using ethernet and our speed is 30Mbps with a ping of 8-9ms.

I'm just wondering if you know what the issue could be.

This is the spec:
PERFORMANCE
Processor- AMD Ryzen 3 3200G Processor
- Quad-core
- 3.6 GHz / 4.0 GHz
- 6 MB cache
RAM- 8 GB DDR4 (2400 MHz)
- 32 GB maximum installable RAM
Graphics card- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
- 4 GB GDDR5
Storage- 1 TB HDD (7200 rpm)
- 256 GB SSD

Have you set the monitor to 144Hz in the Display driver?

Hello - thank you for your reply. You were right, it was only set to 60. We updated it, but Fortnite is still just at 66 FPS.

My son says that it was working properly when we initially got it (last week), but then something changed. We tried re-installing everything today, but we still have this issue.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

If it was working ok when you got it, what changed? Was there a windows update or a new bit of hardware attached?

Hi - I think there was a windows update possibly. We haven't changed any of the hardware...

That was why we tried re-installing everything, including windows but it still seems to be the same after the update.

We turned BullGuard off, but that was after we had already seen the dip in performance.

How did you reinstall windows? Did you clean install or reset from within windows? How did you install drivers?

Turning it off won’t help, you’d have to fully uninstall it.

Hi - my son did "Reset this PC". Do we need to reinstall some drivers?

Yes, sorry.. I mean that we uninstalled BullGuard.

I would suggest possibly going down the route of MSI Afterburner and checking what the bottleneck is. The specs are very limited, even for Fortnight... the newer iterations require fairly heavy CPU use and I think 8GB of RAM is seriously going to struggle.

Hello - thanks for all of the replies. I updated the driver for the graphics card - and after a few crashing issues which we managed to find fixes for - it seems to all be working perfectly now.
I appreciate all of the advice - thanks!

Could you suggest an upgrade to it that would not be too expensive, to improve the performance?
It’s the wrong platform to be upgradeable, it won’t support any upgrades save for RAM, but that won’t significantly affect performance. TBH, I’d take it back and get some advice on something more suitable.

Or just wondering - this is available from PC world for a bit more. Would you expect this to be better?

With a £600 budget you're going to struggle to get anything decent no matter what you do unfortunately. At this sort of budget you are basically purchasing a disposable system. There won't be any path or room to upgrade. This means that you end up buying an entire system for each "upgrade". The good thing about this is that you can be fairly consistent with your budget and spending and continually get a low tier system for similar outlay.

With a system for starting off but considering the future upgrade ability as well, you would be looking at around £800.

Recommended upgrades even to the below (which is the absolute lowest I would recommend) would be upgrading to 2x8GB 3200Mhz RAM and the 1650 Super.

I see this is available from Currys - given that they might allow me to exchange, but not refund. Is this the same machine basically?
