New Laptop advice

Hi all

Currently have an XPS 15 9560. Its cracking for what I need it (Adobe and FM21). Over the last few weeks its acting up (battery gone, few pixels on screen, motherboard charging port is dodgy, screen hinge off a bit etc)

I was looking at upgrading to the new XPS but it seems very pricey compared to what I can get in PC Specialist (Ive never bought off them before so Im new here). Am I missing something obvious here? Its actually cheaper and by the looks a far superior product. Just looking for advice before pulling the trigger. I usually go through laptops every 3 years so I want this one to last and make it count.

My needs are heavy usage of Adobe Products (Photoshop, Illustrator etc)
Heavy usage of Football Manager and the odd game.
Needs to be very portable, not possible to go for a desktop or a heavy laptop. (At 15" Im pushing it with size I need that for Adobe)

Any help is appreciated all. Thanks in advance.

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on this one. I know its a gaming machine and its being used for heavy Adobe/Football Manager. There is nothing obvious Im low on here is there?

Also just wondering if there is much of a difference between these two SSDs

v

1TB Intel® H10 NVMe SSD + 32GB Optane™ 32GB + 21TB Up to 2400MB/s Up to 1800MB/s

A few things to consider...

64GB for adobe suite is overkill, 16gb is more than enough, 32GB is a better sweet spot if your thinking about future proofing,

AMD's are the better CPU so I they're also cheaper and can be paired with faster ram. I would strongly consider an AMD build over Intel at this point.

Remove bullguard antivirus, guys here are saying that its problematic and windows defender does just as good a job without interference.

the warranty upgrade to SILVER is worth the extra £5

if you post the reconfig link for your build and tell us your maximum budget, the more knowledgeable here will be able to further fine tune it.

It wont allow me to change from Intel to AMD, Im guessing Im missing something obvious.
Ive changed it to 32 gb and improved the SSD drive. Might be a better usage of money.
2k is the absolute limit (including VAT)

Personally I think For the extra price as well the better warranty which includes 2 year warranty parts is worth taking just in case on laptops.

Actually last question, sorry now about this folks. Is there a major difference between 1 and 2tb ssd besides space? Not sure I really need 2tb as I have a NAS and dropbox. Again just want to make sure I make the right decision. Thanks all in advance

Space mainly - but some do say as well its best to have two - have your windows etc on the one, then any games / files etc you add on the other - this way then if you need to do a complete reinstall of windows you dont lose all your games / saved data / files.

Definitely. Windows can only have one read/write operation in progress to a physical drive at a time. So if you only have one drive then Windows read/writes will be queuing up behind application read/writes to the same drive. Queuing introduces delays and since Windows is managing everything, anything that slows Windows down slows everything down.

Thus, you want at least two drives; a fast drive for Windows and programs and a slower (aka cheaper) drive for user data. For the very best performance in an ideal world you want one drive per file, then there would be no queuing at all - but that's silly of course!

This is in addition to the point above about no losing all your data when you do a reinstall, which is another very important advantage of two drives of course.
