New PC advice

Hi
Looking at buying a PC later in the year.

I believe there are 2 routes to go down, Intel and AMD! But which 1 is better?

I’ll be looking at spending around £1200 and my monitor I currently have (for console) is a AOC Q3279VWF if that makes a difference.

With my budget in mind, which graphics card would you recommend I get ( I like games like Call of Duty, Dayz, Squad Star Citizen etc etc)

Thanks

P.S. Yes my head is the same size as a leg of lamb!

Ok a couple of things for you to read are linked below, if you are talking later in the year then i would come back and ask when you're ready to order, then we can put a spec together that will suit your needs & budget.

The market is so volatile at the moment due to low supplies of components & high demand that prices are an all time, hopefully later in the year this will have calmed down and you'll get better bang for your buck

Completely agree with what Martin has said. Good to get ahead of the game with this and get some advice, but the market is likely to shift a lot by the time you buy. It will be worth coming back here a week or so before you’re planning to buy and we can reassess then.

With regards to the monitor, you’re rocking a 1440p 75hz display. For FPS titles like Call of Duty a higher refresh monitor is nice, and a lot of people notice the difference between 60-70 and 100-120 fps, so it’s at least worth mentioning. If you’re happy to stick with the current monitor the appropriate Nvidia pairing would be the 3060, or the 3060ti if you were looking at a higher refresh monitor.
AMD have yet to release an appropriate GPU for your needs, with only higher end 6000 series GPUs out at the moment. It’s likely something like a 6600(xt) would do the job but we’ll have to wait until/if it’s released to find out.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes I am doing as much research as possible and I appreciate the market will change a lot this year.

The 3060 or 3060ti is (if I was buying now) what I’d go for. With that said, if I upgraded my monitor a few years down the down would a new GPU be needed?

You really don’t want to see the kip of my head lol.

For a 1080p 240hz experience today, I'd be very tempted to go for the 3060TI if you have a tendency to have the graphics sliders towards the right. If you're happy with lower settings, especially in FPS games, the 3060 would be perfectly adequate. For a £1,200 budget, you'd realistically have to wait anyway as a 60TI is more of a £1,600 build at the moment. Hopefully as prices fall, it'll become a more acceptable price and a card you can afford in your budget.

When it comes to 'futureproofing' for a monitor upgrade, I feel the 3060 is a bit of a deadzone. It'll manage 1440p, but not at amazing framerates, especially if you're used to 240hz 😂. For a 1440p 144hz experience, we generally recommend the 3060TI for todays games, or a 3070 if you're really looking to max that monitor out, but a 3070 would be totally pointless for a 1080p display.

Although, that said, it's a little pointless planning for a monitor upgrade that's a few years away as we have no idea how tech is going to advance. We might be in a position where the 4060 comes out and it's trading blows with the 3070, unlikely but we just don't know. Unless you're planning to upgrade a few months after you get the PC, I'd wait until you do upgrade the monitor then have a look at the GPU market then and decide what you need.

I also 3rd or 4th what the other members are saying about not really looking into a spec too much until you're ready to buy. It's tempting, but it'll change so much in that time.

Thanks all.

although I am aware that things and tech will change during the year, I actually enjoy looking at and learning about what I could afford when the time comes. Hence my question at this time.

with my monitor currently being a 1440p 75hz display I think a 3060 / 3060ti will be good to start with.
I have a friend that says even with your perfect system you’ll likely want to upgrade at some point As we all like new shiny things. As the saying goes ‘when you go down the rabbit hole’ lol.

Maybe also start looking at 1440p 144 Hz monitors like the G5 in my signature...................

Pro's, they are very immersive especially when like the samsungs, they have quite a tight radius (1 Meter)
Cons, can take a bit of time to get used to, but once you have they are great

Hi. Currently researching my next PC.

i‘m thinking of getting a 3060 or 3060ti GPU in my new build. I currently have a AOC Q3279VWFD8 which is QHD at 75hz.

My question is, if I upgraded my monitor to a 4K monitor with higher hz (120hz for example) would this graphics card be suited to this kind of monitor?

Or does anyone have a good monitor in mind to best suit this GPU?

Cheers all

For 3060 1080p, for 3060Ti 1440p, for 3070 ultrawide 1440p and for 3080 4K monitor. Depending on games too. If you'd be playing only old games and don't expect good picture and fps experience you could get a one level lower gpu, but that if only budget is tight, otherwise not worth loosing quality.

For 4k 144Hz, you'd need a minimum of a 3080 really, 3060ti wouldn't be anywhere near powerful enough.

Plus it's currently around £1000 for a suitable 4k monitor.

For the 3060ti, your current monitor is about right, unless you haven't bought it already in which case a 144Hz would be better and give you room to grow into?

Yes I already have this monitor. I am actually very happy with it but with getting a new PC I’d like the best possible monitor hence my question

It's 75Hz and has freesync so should be just about right for the 3060ti, I wouldn't go down to the 3060 though as that would struggle.

Freesync by the way works fine with NVidia graphics cards, some people think only GSync does, but Freesync does too. It's only when you have an AMD card that you have to have a Freesync screen as Gsync won't work with AMD cards currently (although that is changing in the future).

I’m planning on going intel and not AMD if that makes a difference?
I meant GPU, not CPU.

But you really don't want to go Intel on the CPU, they're awful these days for so many reasons.

I'd seriously recommend reading these threads:
