New PC advise - BF 2042

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a new PC and the Disbursement Approver (Wife) has granted me with a budget of c.£1500. I need to get something ordered before the prosecco effect runs off. I have never personally specced a machine and I could really do with your help if possible please!

AMD or Intel:
AMD
Monitor - AOC G2460PF 24" LED 144Hz GAMING MONITOR
Uses - I am a FPS player in general and Battlefield player in particular, and the release of 2042 is a good excuse as any other. 1080p.
Budget - £1500ish (I can always buy more sparkly wine...)
Room to upgrade? - Preferably
Other - WiFi connected (can't run a cable at the moment). I don't need RGB lights in my life atm, preferably a stealthy case.

I made an attempt at configuring something below, but I am at a loss on things like:
  • HDD/SSD/M.2 best config for games/OS
  • Power supply.
  • Wireless network card.

I would appreciate any help whatever small and I thank you for your time for reading my plea :)

PS. If it helps, I can post my current rig, also purchased 5 years ago in this fine establishment!

Looks like a great start. I'd suggest a few changes to the build, though your central combination of 5600X+3060 Ti is an awesome one.

If you can stretch just a little bit beyond £1500, I'd suggest something like this:

Case
FRACTAL MESHIFY C BLACK GAMING CASE (Window) - awesome stealthy case
Processor (CPU)

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Six Core CPU (3.7GHz-4.6GHz/35MB CACHE/AM4)
Motherboard
ASUS® TUF GAMING B550-PLUS (DDR4, USB 3.2, 6Gb/s) - ARGB Ready! - can save a bit on the motherboard
Memory (RAM)

16GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card
8GB PALIT GEFORCE RTX 3060 Ti - HDMI, DP, LHR
1st M.2 SSD Drive
512GB INTEL® 670p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 3000MB/sR | 1600MB/sW) - a fast SSD for your operating system (an upgrade to a faster one would be ideal, but...)
1st M.2 SSD Drive

1TB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD (2200 MB/R, 1500 MB/W) - a fast but not lightning SSD for storing games
Power Supply

CORSAIR 750W TXm SERIES™ SEMI-MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET - stronger power supply for quietness, efficiency and to allow upgrades in the future
Power Cable

1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
STANDARD AMD CPU COOLER - fine for cooling the 5600X: if you're going away from the stock cooler, you should go for something better than what you chose
Thermal Paste

STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING
Sound Card
ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Network Card
10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT
Wireless Network Card
WIRELESS INTEL® Wi-Fi 6 AX200 2,400Mbps/5GHz, 300Mbps/2.4GHz PCI-E CARD + BT 5.0 -the correct choice for a WiFi card
USB/Thunderbolt Options

MIN. 2 x USB 3.0 & 2 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL + MIN. 2 FRONT PORTS

Hi!

First of all, I am incredibly thankful for your response! I am definitely following your advise on this build.

Just a quick question, if I may, regarding the M.2 drives above: without totally breaking the bank (and marriage!) what would be your ideal paring? I am just conscious that the line "(an upgrade to a faster one would be ideal, but...)" would forever haunt me:)

Thanks!

Either a Samsung 980 Pro or a Firecuda 530 for the fastest speed for the OS (500GB).

Yeah, my ideal would be a 500GB Firecuda 530 as the primary drive, and then probably the Intel 670p as the secondary drive. That would add around £80 to your build. Perhaps a middle way is to go for the Firecuda but keep the PCS secondary drive, where lightning speeds are less important and there isn't a huge difference in performance; that brings the overall cost back under £1600.

The Samsung 980 Pro is also just as quick, but to my mind it is an inferior drive because it has a much lower endurance rating.

Perfect thank you! I can totally swing £80!

Or yet another option is to go with the firecuda 530 as a primary drive and pick up something along the lines of the 670p on say Amazon in the black friday sales, then you can say legitimately to your finance director wife that they the build came in under budget or maybe only a pound or 2 over.............

Ok so I'm sitting here with the CFO and she's just seen one of your (@sck451 ) posts on another thread that says 1440P is an awesome experience and I think I might be able to swing a monitor in some black Friday sale.... would the above rig handle 1440P? Apparently valued contributors hold more sway for her than I do FML....

I'll confess I mucked up and now realise that you originally mentioned a 1080p display. This build is actually designed for 1440p, so yes, it'll be superb. (As it happens, the step in cost between the two is surprisingly low right now, so the saving would have been fairly minimal.)

If you're looking at displays, your best options would be:

£230 Samsung Odyssey G5
£279 ASUS Tuf VG27AQ1A
£399 MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD

Each is significantly better than the ones above, but all would be perfectly fine for you. It depends how much you're willing to spend!

Just a quick line to thank you all for your input - case has been discontinued so I changed to CORSAIR iCUE 220T, but will otherwise order based on the above!

Excellent case! (I'm very partial to Fractal's cases, but the 220T is a very good case indeed.)
