Now I'm down to the last issue. An ultrawide monitor! Of at least 34 inches!!! My head is already exploding searching. And my budget is kinda of low. I'm looking for a £300-400 for a 34" inch ultrawide curved monitor which I know is asking for a lot. If anyone knows a little about budget but good ultrawides of that size, please help me!

I'm hearing 1440p is a must but not sure with things like is a response time of 1ms needed? Can it not just be under 5ms? Refresh rate? The amount of Hertz?

Any help would be wonderful...thank you!

Hey! Personally I'd recommend going for the AMD system over Intel (unless the software you use is very much an Intel optimised deal) as you're saving a fair buck and the Ryzen 3000 series is excellent. Any performance boost you're getting with the i9 is pretty marginal, and ultimately you're not going to notice. Plus, unless you're going to be overclocking, the Noctua cooler may be overkill as, while it's great, it isn't that necessary - you'd be better off spending the £9 on the better thermal paste and going to the Frostflow cooler, which is perfectly good.

Your GPU is a great price-to-performance pick, especially if you won't be doing any serious gaming.

I would recommend upgrading the wireless card to the next one up if you are going to be doing anything over WiFi as it supports 2.4/5ghz (basically essential) and adds in Bluetooth functionality which never hurts.

Motherboard is 100% great for what you're using the system for, it's a good board for a build on a budget. You've got overclocking support if you need it and there's room to expand your RAM and add more expansion cards.

For a monitor a 1440p pick is great if you want to spend on it, but you don't *need* it - your GPU won't support high frame rates in games on 1440p (it'll float around 60 on 1080, but dip closer to 40 at 1440). Size and ultrawide is very much a personal preference and depends on your workspace and budget. Just look for a 1ms response time, and go for 144hz refresh over 60hz, both if your spend allows.

As much as I completely agree with the AMD over Intel, and the justification.... I cannot back your thoughts on the cooling, the Frostflow is an absolute mile off. I wouldn't go any lower than the Noctua on a 9900k (in fact, I wouldn't go lower than a Corsair Platinum AIO cooler on it). The 3900X also puts out a lot of heat at full chat and boost clocks will be massively impacted on anything but the best of coolers.

Your motherboard guidance is a mile off and your GPU suggestion is not good as the 1660 is a 1080P card and NOT a 1440p suitable system.

Ultrawide is almost 2 1440p screens resolution so needs a 2080 Super to run it effectively, with the 2080 Ti being the optimum.

Not sure where you are gathering your information from but please try to ensure it's accurate before advising people. We are dealing with a lot of money here on these systems so it's imperative that the information given on this forum is accurate and precise.

To the OP, here is a little guide that I wrote earlier that covers most of your queries along with some of my thinking on building a system....

Agree with Scott and only thing to add is about music production. Depending on what DAW you use a dual-boot system could be a good idea. The Linux Studio distros all come with low latency kernels which is a big plus for music production.

Thank you very much for the guide, I've spent some time reading over it and learnt a few things. With regards to the monitor and resolutions/GPU....I'm not 100% fussed about playing games on the max settings or resolutions. The main purpose I have for this PC will be using my DAW to produce music with huge sound libraries which according to the internet need a good processor and a decent amount of RAM.

I would still like to be able to play games but I am more than happy to play on "good" settings at around 1080p or so. I am really casual and don't think I'll spend enough time on gaming to justify high-end. So with that in mind the ultrawide monitor I am after is for productivity reasons, and to improve my workflow.....so a 1080p ultrawide with a decent response time would make me happy. Now...the question is whether a card like the 1660 I selected above would be okay for an ultrawide at around 1080p?

I've taken onboard your advice regarding the motherboards...I'd have to go up a level for the 3900X. I've begun to consider dropping both the processor down to the 3800X and the motherboard to a B450 but it's difficult as even I'm not sure if I will be maxing out either. At the moment I'm on an i5 and I'm hitting ceilings during creative sessions.

Agree with Scott and only thing to add is about music production. Depending on what DAW you use a dual-boot system could be a good idea. The Linux Studio distros all come with low latency kernels which is a big plus for music production.

Thanks for the tip, will certainly look into that!

It's difficult to do it all for the budget unfortunately. If gaming is not your thing but productivity space is, then a 1080p ultrawide would be absolutely fine. You could go for the 1440p, but it wouldn't game well at all so I wouldn't recommend it unless you dial the settings WAY down and are happy with low FPS. It's a tricky situation to be in to be honest.

You can't "have it all" for the budget but lets see what we can get to with a couple of options....

This one is already over budget, I have a feeling both are going to go the same way to be honest..... to recommend something solid from each mindset. The following will be as powerful as the 9900k system, but have the GPU power to push 1440p Ultrawide at mid/low settings with games. It has the productivity required for the audio work but also has the GPU power for gaming....

Thank you Scott, two very excellent builds, albeit slightly outside my budget. I think what I'll do is go with the 3800X, with one SSD less and maybe add it in a couple weeks when I get some more cash.

I really appreciate the help and insights you've given me thank you!

No worries. The 2nd drive would be for all your effects etc as it would make a HUGE difference to load times etc. Always good to get it when you can, and go for the fastest you can get (M2).

Might be worthwhile holding off and saving a bit more to get it all at the one time. That way it's tested :)

That's very true, would be better getting it tested all at one go.

I actually have one more question if possible! I've decided to go with an ultrawide 34" monitor....with 1440p resolution....this would be great for my productivity. Now all I've been seeing online is that I would need a strong GPU to take advantage of that resolution...but I feel like they are all referring to FPS while gaming.

Would I be able to have a crisp resolution at 1440p on a 34" curved monitor with a 6GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1660? Gaming is secondary to me and I want to have a good screen resolution outside of gaming while trying to not spend a fortune lol!

Thanks again.

When you are pasting in, could you copy the URL at the bottom too? This allows us to go into the build as you specced it to suggest changes etc. Otherwise it's a pain having to go through the entire process from scratch :D

For the RAM you want 3200Mhz
Silver warranty would be recommended

For DAW the 1660 Super would be fine, for gaming you would want the 2060 Super in there. I'm not a fan of AMD offerings as they don't play nicely with other softwares, but that is a powerful card.

I would still opt for the silver warranty. For the sake of a fiver it covers all costs for your returns. If you were to have to send it back once it would cost you at least 4x that cost.

Thanks again Scott, managed to add this onto the order afterwards! Missed that one.

This is the very cheapest ultrawide which is 2x 1440p across:

Looks really good, price not astronomical either. Thanks SpyderTracks!

Edit: Ooo just discovered what AMD Freesync is, so double thanks!!

It's an amazing monitor for the price, ticks all the right boxes and curved as well, incredible specs for the money.

It is pretty good. I've just come across this TV and I'm not sure if there is a catch...electriQ 35" WQHD 100Hz

Seems to have 3440 x 1440p, with 100Hz refresh rate and a 2ms response time. What do you guys think?
It's a rebadged massdrop (now called drop) monitor from the states, there's a thread on it here:
