New PC for Mid-High tier gaming

I think I've posted like maybe twice in total with PC Specialist, this is my first 'Gaming PC', put it in quotes as I've already previously ordered 3 laptops which all worked extremely well.

This is the first time I've built a PC so I wanted to get some external thoughts on the build (been doing some extra searching and the one thing I'm a bit worried about is the PSU if I went too low & the Ram if I overshot it lol). Hoping to keep this PC for about 3-4 years before upgrading again games I will be playing will be:

Red Dead 2
Modern Warfare Multiplayer

Cyberpunk etc..

Side note: I've got a 144hz monitor that I will be pairing with it and this is probably a daft question but how would I use/plug in a DisplayPort in order to get the maximum refresh rate

A couple of things to help us help you:

- Could you please post the configuration link that is at the bottom of the post to forum bit? It just makes it quicker for us to make changes

- Will you be using this for anything other than gaming?
- What is the resolution of your monitor? 1080p? 1440? You can just post the make and model if easier
- What is your maximum budget? Helps us know what leeway there is.

Your other questions:

- Personally, I would always choose the TxM model PSU over the CV one as it is quieter and has less wiring (it is semi-modular) to restrict airflow...but the CV option is fine is budget is tight.
- Displayport is the same as DVI or HDMI, in that you just plug the displayport cable into the displayport, well, port of the monitor...same with GPU and then it's sorted. Depending on the monitor, you may need to enable Freesync/G-Sync to get full effect

- Not really a bit of SQL coding, Salesforce.com usage, watching Youtube, Twitch, Movies and such
- Resolution is 1080p here is the actually Monitor - HP 24x 144Hz Full HD Gaming Monitor (1920 x 1080) NVIDIA G-Sync & AMD FreeSync compatible
- My budget is 1600, the cost of the build at the moment is 1526

I did mean the full config, yeah...but if you could add the config link at the bottom of the page (it is at the bottom in green..under "unique URL to configure)...just helps save us going through the whole config.

If you aren't gaming, then I would think it's unlikely you need a GPU as high as that one..though I don't know whether the coding or the Salesforce stuff requires GPU or not. Someone with more knowledge will need to guide you there.

- With the 3700, I would be looking at a CPU cooler but i am not that knowledgeable on them..possible the Frostflow 240.
- I'd go with a better case as well as that one is a low budget option...I'd go with either the Focus G (much better than it's price suggests) or maybe the iCUE 220...both of those have better airflow.
- RAM you ideally want 3000MHz or more...I believe the 3200 is cheaper than the 3000 at the moment
- Warranty up to Silver as is only £5 more for much better cover
- PSU up to the 550W TxM as it's a better PSU, quieter and less wiring to restrict airflow.

All those are obviously budget dependent..if the GPU can be dropped then it would create budget

I wasn't clear i think but yeah i will be gaming as well as the other things i mentioned

- The stock cooler on the AMD seems to be powerful enough but i will look into potentially adding that cooler
- Sounds like a good idea to upgrade the case, will take you up on the that thank you

I went for a very similar set up to yours for my build. Main differences being I went for Ryzen 5 and 16GB 3600mhz ram. That was based on running max spec on most games at 1440p. For 1080p you’re probably over specced based on the info that’s easily accessible on these forums.

I would urge you to read the sticky guide at the top of the forum as it is an excellent and well reasoned thread on what to buy and what not to buy (and why).

It has altered my view somewhat in that when I first started looking at a new pc I just went for the max spec I could afford.

After a good few days of reading these forums along with some head wrestling with heart, I believe that I’ve purchased a system that will run 99% of today’s games at full whack but with the flexibility to upgrade in 2/3 years time. That reasoning has led me to save £300 on my initial quote, the majority of which I’ve put towards a new gaming monitor. Just some food for thought.

3800X is worth it for £20

Anything under £50 is probably worth the upgrade IMO.

The coolermaster 240 is a better cooler than the PCS one, but the PCS one does have RGB and it WILL be enough for the CPU without worry.

I probably wouldn't middle. It depends on the games though. The 1660S matches 100+fps quite well. The 2060S (I wouldn't go for the non-S) would just give another level of fidelity to that.

Completely budget related of course. The GPU is the last thing I would spend the money on though. As long as nothing else is compromised then there's no issue, for me, with a 2060S in a 1080p rig...... it just seems wasteful to me as the entire rig would be suited for 1440p

Hi all thanks for the replies, at the moment I'm using a 1080p monitor just because that's the monitor I have available but I will for sure be upgrading to a 1440p one later in the year

Changed the motherboard to the one suggested above which has saved me quite a bit

When I was doing research on the 3700 vs 3800 and the 3800 was quite a bit more expensive something like an extra 70-100 (i don't remember where I saw it but for like a 5% increase in power i did not know it was only £20 quid more lol so ive made an update to get that

Also after reading that post Nick posted above about Desktop Building I will be sticking with the Focus G for my case seems to be the best bet for something simple not too flashy or expensive

All in all after taking the considerations everyone has so kindly posted I think this should last me quite a long time without any need to upgrade in the near future

Then... when it comes time to purchase the 1440, take the savings you had and upgrade to the 3060 equivalent GPU. It'll be cheaper than the 2070 Super and a fair bit more powerful.

That does seem like a good idea, tho i am worried that because of the virus the new wont be coming out till next year if that
