New PC reboots after 4 beeps when waking from sleep

Hi all. I hope someone can help.

I have just received a beautiful new PC from PC Specialist and all is great except that it won't sleep properly. When I send it to sleep from windows, and then re-wake it, I get 4 beeps from the system unit, and it appears to power off, then power on again and do a standard reboot. This is quite annoying, and I was really hoping for a nice swift re-wake without having to have windows reloading everything.

I have tried disabling CSM in the BIOS. I have fiddled with the power profile in windows, including disabling hybrid sleep and hibernation.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Did this, but just the same - goes to sleep fine, but when waking it does 4 short beeps then appears to power cycle and does a full boot into windows.

OK. Then remove and reseat the RAM. Also remove and reseat both M.2 drives.

These are common issues on a new build when stuff moves in transit.

OK, thanks.

Was hoping that wouldn't be the next thing, but I can see it being sensible. I seem to recall 4 beeps at POST might indicate problem memory seating. Will try this and report back.

Thanks for the input - much appreciated.

That post code is the 'system timer' which isn't terribly helpful. Shifting hardware in transit is a continuing problem. Check all cards and connectors whilst you're in there. :)

I have taken all 4 DIMMs out & dusted their contacts and seatings with an air-blower.
I took out the M.2 drive nearest the DIMM slots (labelled M2P_CPU on the motherboard map) and dusted it & contacts.
Couldn't easily get to the other M.2, which was under the gigantic graphics card. The graphics card felt well-seated.

Rebooted and put PC to sleep (fine), then woke it and same problem - 4 beeps followed by a power cycle & full reboot.

I have also:
- Installed latest nVidia driver (today's release).
- Updated chipset drivers.
- Tried disabling C-states in BIOS below C3.
- Disabled fast boot in BIOS and in windows.

Still the same problem. Frustrating.

Are there any USB devices attached (apart from mouse and keyboard)?

Unplugged all USB items (only keyboard and mouse left) and same issue - waking from sleep gives 4 beeps, power cycle and full reboot.
Will try starting in safe mode. Can I do standard 'sleep' from there?

I don't believe that sleep or hibernate are available in safe mode due to the limited set of drivers loaded. But you can try. :)

Do you have any third-party programs running when you put it to sleep? Can you try closing all programs except basic Windows and sleep it, then see if it wakes ok.

You might try running the power troubleshooter (enter troubleshoot into search and select power from the additional troubleshooters).

Try setting all the options in your active power plan to their default values.

I know this is a pain, but do you actually need to sleep the PC? PCs start up so quickly now that sleep or hibernation isn’t really required. I usually leave mine running or shut it down fully.

I ended all running programs except essential windows stuff, and same problem. :(

Bigfoot - I agree. Feels like a 1st world problem. But it's annoying not to be able to do what I have always done on a new £3,000 PC. To be honest, rather than pester everyone here, I might end up doing just what you suggest. Still hoping someone comes up with the magic bullet that fixes this though...

All (and especially Ubuysa) - thank you for the help. I am genuinely very grateful.

Agreed, the only thing that mine does is turn the monitor off after 10 minutes, other than that its running or off.

Sleep is a perennial problem IMO. We seem to get occasional but regular posts about sleep issues.

I really don't know what else to suggest.

You could try running a Linux distro off a USB stick (without installing) and see what happens when you sleep that system?

If it's a real problem for you then phone PCS, but be prepared to RMA it and be without it for several weeks.

I never switch off nor sleep any desktop I've had. They're always on 24x7. I've had a problem doing that.

yep same here desktop on 24/7, so no problems like this, also windows updates occur after I've gone to bed so don't have to sit and wait through windows is updating your system messages

OK. Thanks all. I appreciate the valuable input that I have received.

I think I have done all I can to fix this (short of re-flashing the BIOS) and I think you're right that it's not a major issue since I can just leave it running. I guess the power draw of an at-rest system with the monitor off is minimal, and the effect on lifespan of moving parts will not be great.

So, I will just disable sleep and leave it running. I can always shutdown when away from the PC for long periods.

Thanks again.

Out of intrest which slots are the 2 sticks of ram sitting in ?
From your specs

Memory (RAM): 32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 8GB)
Bit puzzling but the maths is off

Ah - sorry about that. I copy-pasted the spec from my original order, but then manually (and inaccurately) edited my after-order adjustments. I actually have 4 x 8GB corsair vengeance.
