New PCS build PC with extremely slow WIFI

Hi!

Recently purchased a new PC from PCS. When I carry out a simple internet speed test (by Google and Ookla). They both measured speeds of about 20mbps which was much different to the 250-300mbps I'm receiving on all other devices throughout the house. (both Aerials are connected and i cant hard wire to the router as it is the opposite end of the house)

can someone please help?

Have you run all the Windows updates, including the optional ones? Bullguard has caused problems in this respect before and is best removed.

yeah i have removed bullguard as i was fed up with the pop ups, to my knowledge windows is up to date, it is a brand new machine

Even if the machine is brand new. The first thing you need to do is run Windows update across restarts until no updates are available. When I received my new PC a few weeks ago, this involved several updates and restarts.

Just a thought. Make sure a PC is connected to 5 GHz wifi, not the default 2.4 GHz. Some Internet provider split them in to two different wifi instances with same passwords. Even though 5 GHz theoretically should have shorter signal distance from a modem, I found it still giving better speeds. It's because 2.4 GHz is an older frequency which doesn't have a good yield comparing to 5 GHz.

thanks, it is on 5Ghz just now, i tried the 2.4Ghz and it was even slower, if i use the laptop or my mobile phone at the pc location i get 350mbps so i dont think its a signal issue

I would then try to install wifi drivers manually. Usually Windows 10 installs them fine, but that's not always the case. Ideally, best is to test speeds with an ethernet cable to see if it's a hardware issue or not.

Hi mate,

In the search bar type cmd or command prompt and right click the application > open as administrator. This will open the elevated command prompt for you.

Once open, copy and paste /sfc scannow and let it do it's thing. Shouldn't take a minute and mostly likely won't find anything corrupted, but on the off chance it does it's worth a quick run.

Do you have the option of running a cable to the router just to try a speed test? Would narrow down where the potential bottle neck is.

I can't agree with this more. Troubleshooting is generally a process of elimination, removing the wireless card from the equation by using an Ethernet cable eliminates a big chunk of potential problems. This provides so much valuable information that it's worth doing no matter how awkward the logistics.

Yeah i had thought a really long cable or power socket adapter to eliminate the wireless card or not as the case maybe
