No Battery Detected

Hi, I have an old Toshiba Satellite Pro C850, that I am trying to revive after about 3 years of inaction.......obviously the battery is dead.......here's the scenario......battery in place, power chord, which is working, plugged in, won't switch on.....remove battery, power chord still plugged in, it fires up, while it's running insert battery, it still runs.......however it is showing "no battery detected".......I have an identical battery which is 100% charged, which I put into laptop, still says "battery not detected" as soon as the power chord is pulled out the thing dies.......have updated drivers, updated BIOS, got latest version of W 10......anyone know WHY it won't recognise the batteries ?......

I would disconnect all peripherals, turn off the PC, remove the power cord, remove the battery, long press the power button to discharge any residual energy & remove the CMOS battery for a few minutes.
Then reconnect everything to see if this shows the battery.
