Noisy CPU fan - Need solution

Hi All

Received my new rig yesterday from PCSpecialist and thrilled with it apart from a noisy CPU fan.

Spec:
FRACTAL DEFINE S NANO GAMING CASE
Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Six Core CPU (3.6GHz-4.2GHz/36MB CACHE/AM4)
Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 I AORUS PRO Wi-Fi AC (DDR4, USB 3.1, 6Gb/s)
Memory: 32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card: 4GB AMD RADEON™ RX 550 - HDMI, DVI - DX® 12
1st Storage: M.2 SSD Drive 512GB INTEL® 660p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (upto 1500MB/sR | 1000MB/sW)
Power Supply: CORSAIR 550W TXm SERIES™ SEMI-MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Processor Cooling: Noctua NH-L9i Low Profile AM4, Super Quiet CPU Cooler
Thermal Paste: ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND
Operating System: Windows 10 Professional 64 Bit

So all is good apart from the CPU fan. It's noisy! I have a thing about noisy fans and my old intel i5-6600 was whisper quiet with the same fan and cooler. I'm getting temps of between 42 and 84 digrees depending on what I do but the temp does go up and down pretty quick as does the speed of the fan. As it's a 65W CPU I think the cooler is not up to the job and the fan struggles a bit. The Case fans are quiet and I have played withe the fan settings in the BIOS. The CPU fan is on Auto as I don't want to mess with it too much although it's better on the quiet setting. I don't really play games much but do a lot of Photoshop/ Lightroom/Nik Software while playing music and browsing the web. So the question is:

Would a bigger cooler and fan be better (say from Be Quiet?) or would a fanless cooler work ok?

Any help appreciated.

Andy

The CPU fan on the 3600 is definitely good enough as I have had the stock fan on my cooler since I got my system in January. i did find it was quite loud to begin with but it did settle down after a while so it's possible the same will happen with yours. Although AI Suite (not the most accurate) gives me temps up to the mid-60s even while gaming so not sure with the temps there
Thanks for the reply. The temps go quite high even just browsing the web. I will do more testing tomorrow.

EDIT: Just been playing and temps fluctuate from 38 - high 50's and change every second sometimes by 10 digrees or more. I'm using Core Temp 1.15.1 to get the reading. as I'm typing this the temp has gone from 38 to 43 and back down to 38 again. There is a Min/Max reading of 37 for minimum amd 60 for Max. I would understand if I were playing a game but not when browsing or typing in a forum. The fan speeds up and slows down with the temp changes.

OK so played BeamNG and that maxed out at 73 digrees and just opened Lightroom and Photoshop plus 2 lots of Nik software plugins and had a play and max temp was 83 digrees. Does that sound OK? It only seems to peak at those temps which I'm OK with, it's just the noise that annoys me :)

Right. I have re configured the CPU fan and it’s much better, less jumpy. Max temp after playing with lightroom was 79 degrees (spiked) so better than before. Still louder than I would like but will look for a quieter option. One is the Nofan CR-80EH Copper IcePipe 80W Fanless CPU Cooler. It will fit and should keep things nice and quiet.

Remember on a new system, there will be loads of processes going on whilst it's downloading and applying updates, and sorting out the indexing and caching. This will go on for a few days before it settles, completely normal.

Thanks guys.
After playing with the bios fan setting it is better. I did a shed load of Lightroom and photoshop work today and they highest the temp got was 73 degrees, most of the time it was in the 50’s..sweet plus it’s less annoying! (y)

I had the exact same CPU and stock cooler and it was incredibly loud, even with a 'quiet' case. Ultimately it's just a really poor cooler in terms of noise. I spent £50 on an after market cooler and installed it and it is whisper quiet.

If you don't want to hear a loud fan I'd recommend purchasing a silent aftermarket cooler. I will never go back to using stock coolers after seeing how big of a difference it makes.
