Not good news if anyone's waiting for the GPU price collapse...

It's probably came at a really good time for me. I want value for money and it's just not there at the moment, I would probably be spending money I didn't have if I could get a 3080 for £700ish.

What worries me is that with TSMC raising their prices, and NVidia and AMD seeing that GPU's are happily selling for up to double their worth, what's to stop them overpricing the 4000/7000 series cards off the back of that.

I think NVidia are more likely culprits at that kind of game as opposed to AMD, but it's a concern.

Sad to say I think things will get worse before they get better as no way are we done with Covid, not just here but internationally

Value for money is pretty subjective given the ongoing situation (not only scalpers making MSRP a myth but legit stores/sites too) and this news that it could be months more yet...

I like to think that I got VFM under the circumstances, getting a 6800XT at £1200.
What's that you say? How and why the...?
Yeah, that was a crazy price but there's crazier...
Well, I had to upgrade, couldn't wait upwards of two months for whatever card ended up in stock and 3080's that trade blows across the board but RT/DLSS in a few games (most of which I'm unlikely to play) had less availability and were £1800 for base models (and up to £2400 for premium ones... even 3070's cost more than a 6800XT!)
Btw I actually wanted AMD this time around. I have to say Nvidia own the hype game at least, thus their sales. If my 6800XT is notching up to 13Gb VRAM use maxing out 1-2 year old AAA games at 3440x1440, where and when does the 3080 hit the wall if used for 3440x1440/4K as expected/placed?

But yeah, if circumstances are crazy enough to have me spending crazy, even if I took the smarter option, what does that mean for the consumers, industry and the future?
I might be ok for now, my GPU surviving a few years 🤞, but what about next gen, next upgrade etc etc...?
Honestly, consoles might've actually been an option for me but no... they lack the games/genres I love and they're having price/availability issues too. Should things ever get right again or even not, folks'll be talking about and analysing this period for decades.

I don't think they will to be honest, at least I hope that's the case. At the moment it's supply and demand, they can only sell what they have so an increased RRP wouldn't be a far cry from expectation. However, once that supply increases to meet demand, they will want to keep their numbers up so sales throughput will be high on the priority list. The pandemic will subside, people will start going outside more. As the demand decreases, the demand itself will also decrease as people tend to want what they can't have more than what they can have...... which in itself leads to sales that would never be. I just bought a PS5 for crying out loud :ROFLMAO:

With that in mind, it'll be a fine balance for now. Otherwise they would cut their nose off to spite their face. They are incredibly clever these organisations and are thinking years into the future rather than just the situation as it stands.

I hope I'm right

I was very fortunate to be perusing Scan's website when a friend on another forum mentioned a drop of FE cards on the same site. So I went and immediately looked for the 3080 I'd be after, but no luck. However they did have a 3080Ti for RRP of £1049 so snapped that up.

I suppose I could have quickly turned a profit, but had originally wanted the 3080 for a 4k rig - so after settling for a 1440p rig and buying a 1440p monitor, I'm now browsing for a non-ultrawide, non-curved, 32" 144hz 4K display...and I there is no way I'm going to pay £3k for the Asus ROG Swift PG32UQX o_O

Might end up with a lightly-curved (2000R-ish) 1440p ultra wide instead.

There are a couple of these left, but 28" not 32. I think the Asus is the only 32" 4K currently available

Thanks, but with my eyesight/sitting distance, I don't think I'll notice much difference over my current 27" 1440 display.

If I were to stay at 27/28" for 4k, then I'd simply move to the 4k version (27GN950-B or 27GP950-B) of the 1440p LG monitor I've got (27GL850-B).

Space is an issue, so I can't use a 'small' OLED, nor too big an ultrawide...although once back to working in the office I can probably rejig the space to get rid of the laptop & monitor taking up a 1/3rd of the desk.

16:9 or 21:9 is about all I can handle, but value the extra vertical real estate more than the horizontal - as a 16:9 is perfect for two-up document/magazine production work.

I'll have to get the measure out and see what will actually fit - don't think the Gigabyte Aorus FV43U at 970mm wide is going to be an option.

Yeah, as an owner of a 28" 4k screen, it's definitely too small for anything outside of gaming. I would agree 32" is the minimum you want to go for 4k.

If it was a Mac screen and OS then I don't have a problem with the HiDPI, as my current WFH iMac is a 27" 5K (5120 × 2880) screen from 2014 and is perfect - except it's 60hz and I can't connect anything else to it to use as a display (except via some low-refresh wifi-display tech).

Apple's 6k (6016x3384) Pro Display XDR would do fine - except that it's 60hz and £5.5k with a stand (or £4.5k without) o_O

Windows display/UI scaling just doesn't seem to work properly as you end up with some elements that are fine, and some that are not, so you're constantly changing resolution or display scale to get the best picture for each use.

Hopefully the rework they've done to screen scaling in Windows 11 will go some way to fixing all this.

IMHO scaling should always be 100%, if it needs any adjustment, the screen isn't suitable for the user. But I realise I'm a bit of a niche concern there ;)
