Well of the phone to pcs and to also confirm to them about changing my 3090 to rog strix, they say their looking at stock date for this on the 14th october but nothing gharanteed.. expecting the wait though so that's not a problem for me.

This is regarding the instability on partner model 3080's with regards to overclocking it's worth watching..... appears to be related to "reference" spec cheaper models (not to be confused with the nVidia Founders Edition, that's quite high end), to do with the power delivery design and the components used within it. It's a hardware issue. It only relates to overclocking as far as they can tell.

Basically, if this report is right and this is the issue, it appears a VBIOS update will need to be pushed out to throttle the boost on the board, so the affected cards pretty much won't be able to be overclocked at all, restricted at a firmware level.

Apparently the Zotac is already corrected in relation to this and shouldn't be affected. Also, assume Asus cards won't be affected as they're higher build spec.

Do watch the video though, it will make more sense.

So people getting Zotac cards in their build soon shouldn't have to worry?

This is going to cause huge issues and requests for replacements? Hope my ROG Strix card isn’t one of these. Don’t fancy sending it from Ireland to the UK of it needs replacing.
Probably not for it being higher end card.

I watched this video and found it helpful – one thing I don't understand though: This problem seems to be related to overclocking specifically. For a newbie, is that something you would consciously have to choose to do – or if I get my build and turn it on, will overclocking be on in some form automatically? IE with GPU Boost - is that just a default feature?

So modern nvidia cards use a feature called GPU Boost, it automatically overclocks the card as much as possible on the fly. But the stock clocks of the card are 1710MHz, the affected cards may well bug out when GPU Boost tries to overclock automatically.

This is still early days in these findings. Even if you've got an affected card, they will likely issue VBIOS updates to correct it fairly quickly.

If you're looking for overclocking ability, definitely go with the Strix for now for safety.

Had pretty much decided this week to order in 2 weeks once Zen 3 was announced. Big Navi really could be in my future now. Or may go down the Asus route. Decisions, decisions...

Apparently the 3090 is ready and available to ship from PCSpecialist. Does anyone know what brand they have in stock? I don't wanna pay £200 above MSRP for a Palit card.

Edit: Took the risk and bought it

While on phone to them the other day they have zotac or gigabyte or you can pay extra for rog strix

Well my phone call this morning with pcs got me super confused lol

My call was really to address the minor psu issue, but after this being resolved
he then told me that the building phase will go on and almost complete.

I told him that i have changed my gpu to rog strix 3090... and he told me ''yes we got a few in at the moment'' and looks like you are
the very lucky ones.

Ummmm yesterday i as told 14th october so confused lol

My mind is still set for the long wait for this card though

I'll keep an eye on this and see how it progresses. If it turns out to be a whole sale issue (not that I do much overclocking) I might pull the card from the config and wait for this to be resolved. Having said that, if the Zotac models supplied by PCS don't have this issue, I think I'll wait a bit longer to see how it plays out.

I wouldn't mind going for the ASUS TUF as it doesn't seem to have this issue but PCS don't have it. Ah well.
