NVIDIA RTX 3060 Ti Gaming PC build: What do you think I should change?

As it may take a while, I am looking at what other brand GPUs are compatible with my build/motherboard? AFAIK, PCS stock only Zotac and Palit, and sometimes founders editions.

I am interested in an NVIDIA 3060Ti or NVIDIA 3070 specced GPU, and this is my current build spec:

2) Budget- what are you looking to spend?
3) Usage- what will you be using the PC for? <as much detail as possible please!
4) Monitor- what monitor will you be hooking this PC up to? It’s super important to get the right GPU Pairing (either make and model or resolution and refresh rate)

Regarding GPU’s the 3060TI seems to be non-existent these days so PCS simply aren’t allowing orders. They are currently for the 3070 and wait times aren’t too bad. It’ll be a queue system so you’ll join a queue and as they receive stock it’ll be allocated to the oldest order until you get to your slot. I wouldn’t bother until it’s on non pre-order, you could be waiting months! PCS generally stocks Palit and Zotac but we have seen some Gigabyte cards as of recent. PCS doesn’t stock FE’s but they do have some ASUS branded cards although these are more expensive for a likely longer wait for very minimal improvements

2. Budget-wise, I am flexible. At the moment, this build cost me around £1,600 and to me, that is reasonable for a beast gaming computer. However, I would not like to make my build any more expensive than that (but if going cheaper on certain parts did not affect the quality of experience I get with the PC, I would consider that).
3. Regarding usage, I would primarily like to be able to play all types of games, mainly Fornite/Witcher 3 and big games that use ray-tracing.
4. I already have a 144Hz 2k monitor that I will be using for this build (has some NVIDIA G-sync feature too, although not sure what that does).

Interesting point about the 3060Ti, I did not realise they were really that rare at the moment (I guess it makes sense, as they are the most popular of the cards, right?). I hope I am not too far down in the queue for the 3070, although I have a feeling I am as my build is at 15 working days which seems short compared to others 🤞

I would recommend that you give this a read, Intel are way behind AMD, in fact the latest offering from intel performs worse than the previous one

This was somewhat true for 10th gen Intel vs Ryzen 2, but with Zen 3 AMD takes the crown. They are either within error margins or outright better. Beyond pure gaming metrics you have much better power draw, thermals and security; info is listed in the thread posted by Martin. We are not fanboys, AMD is just objectively the better choice at the moment.
Your build in its current state would not be what I recommend. While £1600 used to get you a pretty beastly system, Covid disruptions and the Crypto market means that prices continue to be at an all time high and unfortunately look set to remain this way for the rest of the year.

Superior case for airflow, better PSU, and a couple of other changes.
Unfortunately it is just the climate we are in right now that has caused the price increase. In an ideal world you could get the 3070 for £500 or the 3060ti for £400. Instead the 3070 is about £750 on the configurator right now, and the 6700XT is £5 more.

The build will support any 3070. There is some variety in terms of power draw, but you have plenty of margin in your build so you're completely covered.

Any current generation AMD or Intel motherboard will be fine for it. The GPU is fairly agnostic about what motherboard is used.

Sure, worse ray tracing performance and no DLSS (yet) but Nvidia only have that advantage in still very few games with dribs and drabs being added. In every other way, price/perf compared, they either draw or beat Nvidia on average, and AMD still have a trick or two yet to play.
My 5800X/6800XT build is an absolute beast, even for games with RT (which varies greatly in how good or noticeably better it is) few of which given the still low uptake I'd be playing anyway. It's more a gimmick for now until it really picks up tbh, like aiming for good 4K perf with any longevity was not so long ago.

Several middling partner 3070's even reaching what the MSRP was supposed to be for 3090's, while my premium 6800XT was... less (£1200) And let's not even mention 3080 prices... two thousand and how much now?

(Hell, if I didn't want it as a just in case spare, my old 1070 could've fetched enough to recoup 2/3 the cost of that new card)

Given how the cards (3080/6800XT especially, being very close matches, but not only those) apparently match up in all ways but niche ones (for now) that significant extra cost against any other points of comparison for the Nvidia cards is pretty much a fanboy/RT/DLSS premium. My choice was easy... wait weeks/months here (there's folks been waiting 100 days aso) for an Nvidia card at a halfway decent price within a build, go elsewhere for the same at an insane mark up... or not bother with Nvidia's niche advantages (and other potential cons) and get an AMD here with an equal wait time or go elsewhere and swap time waited for a bit extra paid but still less than the competition. No brainer for me tbh, even if all I play had RT/DLSS support, which is mostly not the case.

At normal prices, the AMD cards would be much more appealing, but at the moment, they're around the same cost and even more expensive than nvidia cards.

But the OP asked specifically for an nVidia card anyway and a 3070 which is in good availability so it's kind of moot within this thread.

You may find DLSS a fanboy asset, but there's a reason it's so sought after, 2 x fps on supported games is extremely valuable to most people. It may be a limited list currently, but it's a lot of top titles that do support it.

I have recently managed to find an NVIDIA RTX 3060 Ti GPU, and thus I would like some advice on where I need to update some of the components that I have on my custom PC build. This includes upgrades or downgrades where applicable (as I can upgrade with some extra budget I now have and downgrade where I might now have something that is unnecessarily too powerful).

I was some specific advice on:

• CPU - Is it worth upgrading to an i7? I see lots online that games recommend you have an i7 over an i5.
• SSD - I am thinking of upgrading this to a faster one, can you recommend any?
• Power Supply - Can this be downgraded to a lower wattage now? What one do you suggest?

Some details about my build before jumping into the spec of my current build:

1. For my budget, I am flexible. At the moment, this build with the 3060 Ti is going to cost me just over £1300 and to me, that is reasonable for a beast gaming computer. As my old cost was £1600, I do mind if the price goes up to that with changes as that was my original budget (but if going cheaper on certain parts did not affect the quality of experience I get with the PC, I would consider that).
2. Regarding usage, I would primarily be using this PC for playing all types of games. I mainly play Fornite and also games like Witcher 3, and I would like to be able to play games that use ray-tracing. As a secondary usage, I would also like to be able to stream my gameplay to something like Twitch/YouTube/Discord.

We wouldn’t generally recommend going with Intel at all at this point in time, they’re lagging behind AMD in a big way.

I’m also of the opinion that you shouldn’t be downgrading any aspect of a system. Ideally you want to be putting the best that you can in at this stage in order to give the system the best possible lifespan. I’d always overspec a PSU so that when it’s time to upgrade to a new GPU in future, you’ve got the headroom in wattage to cover it.

If you do a lot of streaming and content creation, 32GB of RAM might be beneficial but starting with 16GB and seeing how you get on would be my approach.

It’s worth changing, that intel cpu is already 2 years old so you’ll significantly shorten the lifespan of a new system as well as missing out on latest gen SSDs and other features. That’s aside from the poor performance of the cpu

I’d always overspec a PSU so that when it’s time to upgrade to a new GPU in future, you’ve got the headroom in wattage to cover it.

If you do a lot of streaming and content creation, 32GB of RAM might be beneficial but starting with 16GB and seeing how you get on would be my approach.

Thanks for your suggestion @AgentCooper! I have some questions about your changes to understand a bit more:

1. Case - I really like my current case, so was wondering why you would pick this one and also if I use the other specs with my current case would that still work well in your opinion?
2. RAM - You picked a 3200MHz which is a downgrade from the 3600MHz I picked in my original build, can you explain why? Did I have an excess of RAM speed here?
3. Processor Cooling - What is your reasoning for changing to this one? I am quite a noob on cooling so it would be great to understand the differences.

Due to its design, the NZXT case you’ve chosen isn’t the best for airflow. You ideally want a case that’s a bit more open to allow air to move freely through the system and bathe the components with a nice cool breeze. If you’re set on having a white case, the Corsair 4000D is a good option. It’s not currently available on the configurator but you could always purchase it separately and have it shipped to PCS for them to build in.

3200MHz of RAM is absolutely fine for a gaming build, there’s precious little gain to be had from the higher frequency. If you were building an audio production system, that’s where the 3600MHz would shine.

I changed from an air cooler to an AIO as they’re a much more efficient cooling solution. You want your CPU at as low a temperature as possible in order to help it reach peak boost and an AIO is far better equipped to do that over a fan.
