Before anything, please see below specs. I know my girl is a bit of an oldie, but it has served me without an issue since 2019 when I bought it.

Now the issues I am having have to do with random shutdowns while gaming. Attached are the latest CPUZ and cinebench benchmarks. All stats on Ol`Bess here are default, I have not messed with any of the bios settings. They are the same as when it came out of the box.

Cooling is made via a KLIM Mistral Laptop Cooling Pad - NEW 2023 - Powerful Turbo-Fan 4500 RPM Laptop Cooler - Rubber Ring Seal for Maximum Performance - Avoid Overheating and Protect Your Gaming Laptop - 15-17 in

My shutdown issues started with CP2077 and since the 2.0 updated and the Phantom Liberty DLC. It just shuts down randomly. I can play for 1h, I can play for 5 mins and bam...total shutdown. Before 2.0 I had no issues running it at max specs with 0 issues. Now it seems to have spread to other games. So far I have only tested it on Starfield and Remnant 2. While the shutdowns are not that frequent they do happen.

In term of temperatures while CP2077 (after 2.0 update) was running, I can say that the CPU ran somewhat hot at 85-86 and at one point HWMonitor gave me a max temp of 92

As you can see from the screenshots, I have ran Cinebench and CPUz. I ran the 10 minutes stress test/throttling and the 30 minutes stability tests on both the CPU and GPU and nada...No shutdown, no overheating (the highest CPU temp went during one of these tests was 85)

NVIDIA drivers are updated to the latest version of 537.42. Windows is up to date to the latest 2H22 version

The only thing I feel the need to mention is that this is the first time I am using Ol`Bess outside of UK since I bought it (The damn thing weighs 4 kilos, not an easy thing to put in my travel backpack) and I am using a UK to EU wall socket converter I got here in Romania (I am here for a vacation, will return to UK in 2 weeks). Not sure if that is the issue. I had no shutdown issues prior to CP2077s 2.0 launch

Any help would be appreciated.

When you say it's shutting down randomly, is there any error message or does it just lose power suddenly?

I take it the battery is charging when it's connected to power socket?

May be worth opening cmd prompt as admin and typing the command: powercfg/ batteryreport

That should output a battery report text file to system32 I think, just check that for the wear level, or what it's managing at full charge against what it's rated for.

Modern laptops (I include yours even though it's a few years old) require battery power as well when they're operating on mains, just because they suck so much juice. The 2080 is quite a powerful beast. If the battery wasn't properly charging, it could possibly result in the issues you're describing when it hit a high GPU load and just wasn't supplying enough power.

I think you're right, the temps don't look to be an issue, think it's more likely power related. If the battery report shows all good, then I think we can look at the european adapter perhaps being problematic.

It is an instant shutdown. No warning whatsoever and it is always running plugged in, especially when I am gaming. I have attached the battery report, although I am not sure it will display correctly. I have no idea on what to look at in it, but here goes nothing. And yes, I will make a visit in a shop tomorrow to see if I can get a different European adapter.

The thing is, I have been here for 3 weeks already (I mean Romania) and had no issues whatsoever until the 2.0 update dropped for Cyberpunk. I will buy another adaptor maybe that will fix it

HWMonitor says the wear lvl is 5% on the battery. See attached jpg

Battery looks fine.

It's a weird one, it does sound power related. I'm guessing cyber punk 2.0 is just drawing that much more power from the GPU, so perhaps demanding more power than previously.

Yeah, apparently the devs said it will use 90% of your CPU just to run everything on high. The issue is I have encountered another 2 more games in my library where the shutdown issue happens (starfield and Remnant 2), where it did not happen before so it might be the adaptor, as you said. I will get a new power adaptor and give it another try tomorrow

May be worth running a stress test with both Prime95 and Cinebench R24, they tend to put the most significant CPU loads, I'm not certain what load CPU-Z actually applies.

And then do a Heaven benchmark.

All the while, keep monitoring your temps and take a screenshot of the temp output during each test near the end of it, minimum of 10 minutes per test

If you look at the screenshots from my initial post, I did do the cinebench24 both Stress and stability tests and No crashes. Now onto the Ungine benchmark, these are the test results...but, maybe I might have found the issue. it could be my GPU...The Heaven benchmark was running in the background on extreme Preset, after finishing the benchmark and it just shut down while i was typing. as you can see from the screenshots, the GPU had a spike of 83C while the benchmark was running. Not sure if that was the cause or not

I will run the benchmark again on extreme, see if it shuts down my laptop again...will update in 30

Edit: I think it`s the GPU that is causing the issues. I was running the Heaven benchmark on extreme and it shut down twice. Now the issue is that besides a spike in temp to 84C (HWID put the hotspot at 84C) the main Temp was a stable 72-75C until the crash. it happened around the 7 minute mark, the 1st crash and a little over 4 minutes for the second one. Will run one more test on extreme to be sure

Right

First of all, Thank you SpyderTracks for all the help you have given me. Second of all, I am now a bit confused. As I mentioned in my previous reply, my laptop crashed twice during the Heaven Benchmark. Both times I was also replying to here while I was running the program in the background.

For a final test, I ran the Heaven program on extreme for 30 minutes (just finished as i started typing). I just let it do its thing with no interference or doing anything else in the meantime. With the exception of several temp spikes to 83-84, the GPU maintained a constant temp of 72 ish, with lows of 69 and highs of 75. No shutdowns whatsoever. See attached screenshot from the end of the run.

The only thing left to try is get another power adaptor and try with that otherwise I will leave it be until i return to UK in 2 weeks and see how it behaves there.

I am at a WTF? moment as I cannot comprehend what the issues might be. Could it be the NVIDIA drivers? I will give that a try. Unistall the latest version, then install it again

Nvidia drivers would give an error.

It may be worth uploading the following for @ubuysa to take a look through, ignore that it’s for a BSOD, includes other things too

I have uploaded the requested file. Had another shutdown today playing warframe. Temps seemed to be within the normal range. CPU max temp was 75

Yawn, stretch.....did somebody call?

I see nothing in either the System nor Application logs to account for the crashing and restarts, apart from the error 41 due to the crashes, these logs look remarkably normal.

There are two things that are worth mentioning....

Thing 1: There are repeated error messages in the System log for the Energy Saver Service...

This is a component of the Intel Driver Update Utility, which whilst a useful tool is not essential. I doubt it's related to your crashes but it might be worth uninstalling the Intel tool.

These are also most unlikely to be related to your crashes, but it might be worth uninstalling the EASEUS tool.

I suspect that the earlier suggestions that this is possibly power adapter related are probably correct.

Thank you for your reply. I did not get a chance to go and buy another power adaptor and i will try and do that first thing tomorrow morning. As for the other 2 programs, i will uninstall them RN

I hope it is a power issue. As mentioned in previous posts, this is the 1st time i take Ol`Bess for a vacation outside UK. The sockets in romania are 220 maybe that is what is causing the issue.

Hello again.

I appreciate and thank you for your answer, but that leads me to another question, and forgive my ignorance, but if the issue is with the power, wouldn`t the battery prevent it from shutting down when it does not draw enough power from the socket? the battery is always full as i have my laptop plugged in when in use. As you can see from the battery report SpyderTracks asked me to post, battery is always full or close to full and has a minimal wear lvl

I made a mistake earlier, as I have been out of the country for more than 15 years and when I do come, I usually stay no more than a week or 2 and this is the first time i bring anything bigger than a tablet with me. Since joining EU in 2007, Romania has shifted to the 230V used all over EU. 220 used to be the old value, pre 2007, so basically right now it uses the same 230V and 50Hz as any socket in the UK.

Anyway, now onto the update. I went ahead and got a brand new lead to connect from the power brick/charger to the wall socket and that did not do anything. It crashed twice in a row while i was loading into a game (starfield to be precise). One minute the game is loading a save, the next Laptop shuts down, So i do not know what would cause it

Prior to trying to launch a game, i had Heaven Benchmark 4.0 run for 2h on Extreme setting and had no issues. GPU was at a constant 70C everything was running smoothly.

I ask this because it is the only other thing that comes to mind. Could a SSD cause the shutdown? I have Windows 10 and program files installed on Drive C and that one is a Samsung SSD 970 Evo Plus (500GB with plenty of storage left), but compared to the other 2 SSds it runs a bit hot. At the moment is sitting at 65C while the other 2 are roughly 37C

Does it shutdown (that's what you just wrote) or does it just switch off? Does it restart itself?

Instant shutdown. I have to manually press the power button to turn it on again. But so far it seems to be affecting 2 games only. Cyberpunk2077 and starfield. I have them both modded with Nexus mods so maybe that is what is partially to blame. Will have to investigate further as in try and run them without mod to see if that improves things

On another hand I have been playing Assassin`s Creed Mirage for a good hour or so and no shutdown yet. Temps are a bit on the high part, with CPU varying between 80 - 86 and GPU at a constant 70

If it's an instant shutdown it's most likely to be a hardware problem. Can you check all temperatures please? HWMonitor (free) is a good tool for that. Excessive CPU temps will cause a switch off, especially under a gaming load.

Power problems can cause an instant power off too. Can you remove the battery on that model and just run on the charger only? Does that laptop require both battery and mains power for gaming performance?

If it's an older laptop, when did you last give it a good internal clean? If the finned heat exchanger(s) right next to the fan(s) is/are blocked with dust and fluff then it will overheat when gaming.

Good morning

I am using HWmonitor and temps seem to be fine. When I was doing all those benchmarks and tests SpyderTraks was asking me to the temps were fine. During the 2h Heaven Benchmark Extreme run the temps were a stable 80ish on the CPU and 70ish on the GPU. I have run multiple Cinebench tests, both throttling and stability with no crashes with CPU usually being a stable 80-85 max

I will test the no battery mode see how it works. I never ran it without the battery installed. I will let you know tonight.

I do a regular cleanup and CPU/GPU repasting every year. The last one I had it done was in August of this year before I came home to Romania

Interesting fact is that last night I played Assassin`s creed Mirage on Max settings without a shutdown the entire 3h gaming session. While HWMonitor showed a spike in CPU temp to 100C at one point it did not shutdown the laptop. Generally during the game session, CPU temps were between 80-86 with the occasional spikes to 90ish.

Weird, it seems the only 2 games that cause constant shutdowns are CP2077 and Starfield.

Can you clear both the System and Application logs and immediately play Cyberpunk until it switches off. Then reboot and upload the System and Application logs indicating they were during CP2077 gaming.

Then clear the System and Application logs again and immediately play Starfield until it switches off. Then reboot and upload the System and Application logs indicating that they were during Starfield gameplay.

Can you also look in the folder C:\Windows\LiveKernelReports and check in all of the sub-folders for dump files. Upload any that you find.
