Opinion and input on new quoted specs

Yeah that's naughty as well however I just found it odd to be so dismissive of a fairly innocent yet legit comment/observation, not to get in to the ins and outs of manipulative marketing :p

Don't think anyone's being dismissive - just pointing out that, for example, it's not just PCS doing it and taking your original comment in isolation could lead to that belief. :)

Look, I didn't intend to provoke this debate - but if people want to have it, maybe a mod could move it to its own thread, and let the original poster have this one back to sort his build out!

For me, the bottom line is that many review specs which are unavailable shortly after being posted on the website do in fact become available later.

And so the issue isn't so much PCS dangling bait for potential consumers in a sneaky way, as the reviews being completed and published perhaps before the systems are ready for general release. Or perhaps PCS have had a spate of stock issues, etc.

I would say that the review systems do serve another purpose beyond providing bargains. They give magazines and independent websites the opportunity to review and comment on PC Specialist's work - whether that's component combination choice, PCS's cable management and the elegance of their builds, build quality, etc - and to compare what PCS have to offer versus their competitors. We can't comment on competitors' specs on this forum, beyond encouraging people to shop around and get the best deal for themselves, but these reviews often directly compare PCS's offerings against other companies' products. (NB: sometimes they do this in a pretty unhelpful way e.g. comparing systems with a 1060s to ones with 1080s, but whatever..). The point is that even if PCS do a model with a very limited supply, the review being easily accessible still has a lot of value to consumers wanting to assess PCS's systems.

I will try to flag up the issue of review builds sometimes taking a while to appear in stock. Maybe suggest they consider some kind of differentiation between those no longer available to order because they're sold out, and those "Coming Soon..."

And in terms of coming back to @nijsat's spec advice:

I suspect (could be wrong) the Vulcan S 01 will be available soon, and I would suggest waiting and seeing. Perhaps phone PC Specialist and ask if there is an ETA?

If not, then the Magma Pro here is still available and is a much better deal than the spec you posted. It sports a GTX 1080 and a fast SSD, as well as plenty of other goodies:

Actually it's not an accurate representation of their services as review machines tend to have built in discounts so for the purpose of cost vs performance it actually is misleading and "naughty". Not that it bothers me but as a consumer you shouldn't be defending it.

You don't think that it's a tad arrogant of you to be telling me what I should and shouldn't be defending? You're quite entitled to make arguments and hold opinions, but you absolutely cannot tell me what I may or may not do or think.

I see absolutely nothing 'naughty' or 'misleading' in PCS building PCs that are sent for review and then either not sold or withdrawn from sale after only a short time. A review machine belongs to PCS and they are entitled to do with it whatever they please.

You're very defensive. You are also more than welcome to not take advice, I never gave you an order I offered my opinion on how you handled a legitimate line of thought. Oussebon provided a much better breakdown and response which addresses both sides of the coin. Regardless, people in a position of influence should act with more care in my opinion. I'll not comment further so as to not derail this thread more than it has been. Have a good night.

Hi guys,

The Vulcan S-01 is now back live! It was removed over the weekend as we were missing stock on one of the components.

Thanks,
Ben

The specs are very similar in many ways.

16gb 3000MHz RAM. GTX 1080. 256gb PCIe NVMe SSD. 1TB HDD. H100i V2 CPU cooler. 650W gold-rated, modular PSU.

The main differences I see are:
i7 8700k on the Vulkan, R7 2700x on the Magma (obviously)
USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type A+C on the Magma (Type A only on the Vulkan)
RGB Fans on the Magma RGB RAM on the Vulkan
Tempered glass on both systems, but different case model.
Magma supports SLI
Magma's SSD is somewhat faster

In terms of straight up gaming performance, the i7 8700k leads fairly clearly:

USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C is irrelevant to gaming performance. You won't be using SLI. SSD speed makes no difference to gaming performance. ANd you can buy those exact RGB fans separately from Corsair and fit them yourself if you want to the Vulkan, or any other RGB fans you like.

So for straight gaming performance, the Vulkan would be the clear winner.
